Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

For a beginning home mechanic, a more practical starter kit is a set of tools chosen for different jobs—paired with the vehicle’s own service instructions. This is a deliberately scoped recommendation, not a universal nine-tool standard.
1. Socket set and ratchet
A socket set with a ratchet is the foundation for many routine jobs, from removing covers to loosening and tightening accessible fasteners. One 10mm socket covers only one size; a useful set provides a range of sizes, and extensions help reach recessed or obstructed fasteners. Haynes recommends a socket set with extensions, while Nissan includes socket wrenches in its home-repair tool list.
When choosing a set, check its size coverage, drive size, included extensions, and compatibility with the work you expect to do. A 10mm socket belongs in a toolkit; it simply is not the toolkit.
2. Torque wrench
A torque wrench lets you tighten fasteners to a specified value when the vehicle’s procedure calls for controlled torque. This matters because the correct value depends on the vehicle and the particular fastener—not on a generic rule of thumb.

- Mechanic's 201-piece tool kit and socket set for tackling multiple sizes and types of fasteners, especially nuts and bolts
- Includes most popular 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 inch sockets, hex keys, and screwdriver bits; both Metric and SAE sizes included
- Chrome-vanadium steel forged body for torque, strength, and durability
- Full polished-chrome finish provides anti-corrosion protection
- Case provides convenient tool storage and portability
Look up the procedure and torque specification in the owner’s manual or vehicle-specific service information. Then choose a wrench whose torque range and drive fit the job. Nissan and Haynes both include a torque wrench among their recommended tools.
3. Safe lifting and support equipment
Some jobs require raising the vehicle, but a tire-change jack is not a safe support for working underneath it. KYB states: “Never work under a car supported only by a tire-change jack; use high-quality jack stands positioned properly for your vehicle.”

- DirectTorque Technology: Sockets feature DirectTorque technology, which helps prevent rounding of fasteners and ensures optimal torque transfer
- 6-Point Socket Design: Provides better grip and reduces the risk of fastener rounding, especially compared to traditional 12-point sockets
Depending on the job and vehicle, suitable equipment may include properly rated jack stands or ramps. Follow the vehicle’s lifting-point guidance and the equipment instructions; capacity, compatibility, and correct positioning all matter. Mobil also lists ramps and jack stands among possible DIY equipment, alongside safety glasses and gloves.
4. Wrench set
Wrenches handle fasteners where a socket and ratchet will not fit, or where holding one side of a connection is useful. A practical range complements the socket set rather than duplicating it. Nissan’s home-repair list includes regular wrenches, and O’Reilly also describes conventional hand tools as part of a DIY mechanic’s kit.

5. Screwdrivers
Keep screwdrivers suited to the fasteners and trim work on your vehicle. They can help with accessible screws and other appropriate tasks, but the correct tip and size matter: a poor fit can damage the fastener. Nissan includes screwdrivers in its recommended tools.
6. Pliers and wire tools
Pliers are useful for gripping and handling parts that are not suited to a wrench. For electrical work, wire cutters and strippers serve different purposes from general-purpose pliers. Nissan groups pliers, wire cutters, and wire strippers in its tool list; treat specialized electrical tools as job-dependent rather than mandatory for every beginner.

7. Diagnostic code reader
A compatible code reader can retrieve fault codes that help guide troubleshooting. A code is a clue, not a guaranteed identification of the failed part: diagnosis may require vehicle-specific procedures and additional checks. Haynes includes a diagnostic code reader in its essential-tool guide.
Before buying or using one, confirm that it supports your vehicle and provides the diagnostic functions you need. Do not assume every reader offers the same coverage or capabilities.

8. Work light
A work light makes it easier to see fasteners, connectors, and other parts in dim or obstructed areas. It is a simple practical aid rather than a substitute for the correct procedure. Nissan includes a work light in its home-repair list.
9. Vehicle-specific repair information
The right instructions are part of the toolkit. The correct lifting points, fastener torque, access method, and diagnostic steps can vary by vehicle and procedure. Use the owner’s manual or vehicle-specific service information for the job in front of you, instead of assuming a general guide applies to every model.
These recommendations synthesize categories covered by Nissan’s 2022 home-repair tool list, Haynes’s 2017 maintenance-tool guide, and O’Reilly’s DIY mechanic tool overview. The sources do not establish one official list of exactly nine tools.
Quick Recap
What to check before starting a job
- Confirm the procedure and specifications for your vehicle, including any required torque values.
- Check that your tools fit the fasteners and the available access; use suitable extensions where needed.
- If lifting the vehicle, identify the approved lift points and select compatible, properly rated support equipment.
- For code reading, verify the reader’s vehicle compatibility and the functions it actually supports.
- Use appropriate protective equipment; Mobil’s safety guidance includes safety glasses and gloves among possible DIY equipment. See Mobil’s car-maintenance safety tips and KYB’s tool and safety guides.
