The 6 Best Pasta Makers of 2026, Tested and Reviewed come down to the pasta you want and how much work you want to do: the Marcato Atlas 150 is the best manual roller, Marcato’s motorized setup is best for hands-free sheets, KitchenAid wins for mixer owners, and Philips is better for automatic extrusion.

A roller and an automatic extruder are not interchangeable. Rollers make broad sheets for lasagna and ravioli before cutting strands, while extruders mix, knead, and press dough through shaping dies. The six recommendations below cover those different jobs instead of treating every pasta maker as the same kind of appliance.

Important testing note: This review draws on the cited 2026 and recent testing coverage plus current manufacturer documentation. It does not claim that the itechguides.com editorial team independently performed the hands-on tests described below. Prices, U.S. availability, included accessories, warranties, and Philips model numbers should be rechecked immediately before publication.

Key takeaways

  • The Marcato Atlas 150 is the strongest manual overall choice because Marcato lists a 150-millimeter roller, 10 thickness positions, and cutters for lasagna, fettuccine, tagliolini, and spaghetti.
  • A motorized Marcato Atlasmotor or compatible Atlas 150 with Pastadrive leaves both hands free, but Pastadrive compatibility depends on the machine’s production date and some accessories are incompatible with the motor.
  • A KitchenAid pasta roller and cutter attachment makes the most sense for someone who already owns a compatible KitchenAid stand mixer; it is not a standalone pasta machine.
  • Imperia is a credible traditional alternative, but cited testing found more trouble with all-purpose flour, sticking, tearing, and thin settings than with the Marcato Atlas.
  • Philips automatic machines mix, knead, and extrude pasta with less manual effort, but they are more dependent on precise recipes and have more parts to clean.
  • Current U.S. prices and the exact Philips 7000 Series and Compact models must be verified because regional versions, included dies, stock, and retailer prices vary.

Which pasta maker is best for most home cooks?

The Marcato Atlas 150 is the best manual pasta maker for most home cooks who want traditional rolled pasta, dependable thickness control, and the option to add motorized assistance later. Marcato says the Atlas 150 has 10 thickness positions, a 150-millimeter working width, anodized aluminum rollers, and a bayonet coupling for either the hand crank or Pastadrive motor.

The Atlas 150 is not the best choice for every cook. Someone who mainly wants penne or shells should choose an automatic extruder, and someone who already owns a compatible KitchenAid mixer may save counter space with the KitchenAid attachment. A cook who cannot comfortably crank while feeding dough should consider the motorized Marcato configuration instead.

Independent coverage broadly supports the Atlas choice. Reviewed selected the Marcato Atlas 150 as its 2026 editor’s-choice pasta maker, while Bon Appétit selected the Atlas 150 as its best manual machine. Food Network’s coverage, updated February 3, 2026, also named the Atlas its best overall pick, although Food Network described nine usable thickness settings rather than the 10 positions Marcato lists for the current product.

What is the difference between a roller, a motorized roller, and an automatic extruder?

A manual roller flattens dough between adjustable rollers, and a cutter turns the sheet into strands. A motorized roller performs the same rolling and cutting job while freeing both hands. An automatic extruder mixes and kneads dough, then pushes it through dies to form shapes such as spaghetti, tubes, or shells.

Type Best use Advantages Limitations
Manual roller Lasagna, ravioli sheets, fettuccine, tagliatelle, and controlled sheet thickness Usually less expensive, quiet, compact, mechanically simple, and easy to control Requires two-handed coordination, a clamp, and separately prepared dough
Motorized roller Frequent use, long sheets, solo cooking, or limited hand coordination Both hands remain available to feed and catch dough; rolling is easier and more consistent Costs more, adds a motor to store, and may have model-generation restrictions
Automatic extruder Hands-off batches and shapes unavailable from a basic roller Mixes, kneads, and extrudes with several dies Recipe ratios matter more, cleanup takes longer, and broad lasagna-style sheets are generally not its strength

The category distinction matters more than a small difference in star ratings. A roller is the better tool for ravioli and broad sheets; an extruder is the better tool for users who want shaped noodles with minimal manual preparation.

1. Marcato Atlas 150: best manual pasta maker overall

Verdict: Choose the Marcato Atlas 150 if you want the most versatile traditional roller and are willing to prepare the dough yourself.

Marcato says the Atlas 150 produces lasagna, fettuccine, tagliolini, and spaghetti, with additional accessories available. The company lists 10 thickness positions and describes anodized aluminum rollers and chrome-plated steel construction. The 150-millimeter width is practical for home batches without making the machine especially large.

In Food Network’s testing, the Atlas performed best through settings one to six, while thinner settings showed some tearing or sticking. That result is useful because a machine’s advertised number of settings does not guarantee that every setting will be equally easy to use. The practical question is whether the machine produces a smooth, consistent sheet at the thickness needed for the recipe.

The Atlas has a strong upgrade path. Marcato’s product information describes a bayonet coupling for the crank or Pastadrive motor, so a buyer can begin manually and add motorized assistance later. That flexibility is conditional, however: Marcato’s Pastadrive compatibility guidance separates machines by production date and says some Atlas accessories, including ravioli, reginette, and mafaldine accessories, cannot be used with Pastadrive.

What are the Atlas 150’s limitations?

The Atlas 150 still requires a stable counter, an engaged clamp, and coordinated hand movements. The machine does not mix or knead dough, and its standard configuration is designed for rolled pasta rather than extruded shapes. Traditional metal rollers should also be cleaned according to Marcato’s instructions rather than rinsed or immersed casually.

2. Marcato Atlasmotor or Atlas 150 with Pastadrive: best motorized roller

Verdict: Choose a motorized Marcato configuration if cranking and catching a pasta sheet at the same time is the main frustration with a manual machine.

The Atlasmotor and a compatible Atlas 150 paired with Pastadrive retain the roller’s control over sheet thickness while eliminating the need to turn a crank continuously. That is especially helpful for one person working with long sheets, for larger batches, or for anyone with limited hand coordination.

Bon Appétit favored the Marcato Atlasmotor overall, and Epicurious reported that the motorized Atlas handled multiple doughs well. The motor does not change the basic category: the setup still rolls and cuts dough, but it does not automatically mix or knead the dough.

Buying the complete Atlasmotor package can be simpler than assembling a manual machine and motor, but the package contents must be checked carefully. A listing for a Pastadrive accessory is not the same purchase as a complete motorized Atlas. Marcato listed Pastadrive at €135.90 on its European storefront when observed, but that is not a U.S. selling price and should not be used as a U.S. cost estimate.

When should you avoid the motorized Marcato setup?

Occasional pasta makers may not benefit enough from the extra cost, motor storage, and compatibility checks. Do not buy a used Atlas or an older Pastadrive without checking the production-date guidance, because machines made before 2014, from 2014 through 2022, and after January 2023 may require different compatibility arrangements or adapters.

3. KitchenAid 3-Piece Pasta Roller & Cutter Set: best for KitchenAid stand-mixer owners

Verdict: Choose the KitchenAid 3-Piece Pasta Roller & Cutter Set if you already own a compatible KitchenAid stand mixer and want to avoid storing a separate motorized base.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The attachment uses the stand mixer’s power hub to drive the roller and cutters. The arrangement is convenient for a kitchen where a KitchenAid mixer already occupies counter or cabinet space, and the motor leaves both hands free in much the same way as a motorized dedicated roller.

The attachment is not a standalone pasta maker. The buyer must already have a compatible KitchenAid stand mixer, must still make and portion the dough, and gives up the portability of a dedicated machine. Consult the KitchenAid roller and cutter guide for the applicable installation and operating instructions before purchase.

Who should not buy the KitchenAid attachment?

Someone without a compatible KitchenAid mixer should compare the total setup cost against a dedicated manual or motorized machine. The attachment is also a poor choice for a cook who wants automatic mixing, kneading, and extrusion; the attachment outsources the rolling motor but does not perform the entire dough-making process.

4. Imperia Pasta Maker Machine or iPasta Classic: best traditional alternative

Verdict: Imperia is a reasonable traditional alternative to Marcato, but it should be chosen for its design and accessory preferences rather than assumed to be the most forgiving machine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Imperia uses the familiar metal roller-and-cutter format and suits buyers who want rolled sheets and traditional cut noodles. The machine is not an automatic extruder, so dough preparation, rolling, cutting, and cleanup remain hands-on.

The most important distinction is dough tolerance. Bon Appétit reported that its tested Imperia handled 00 flour well but jammed with all-purpose flour. Food Network also reported tearing and sticking on thinner settings, as well as a clamp that was harder to secure than the Atlas. Those are test observations, not proof that every Imperia unit will fail with all-purpose flour, but they matter to U.S. cooks who commonly use pantry flour.

Imperia is therefore more attractive to a buyer who routinely follows a tested 00-flour recipe and values the machine’s traditional feel. A buyer who wants to improvise with dough formulas should compare the Imperia directly against the Atlas using the same flour, egg weight, hydration, rest, and number of passes.

How should Imperia be cleaned?

Do not assume the Imperia can be washed like a removable plastic appliance. Bon Appétit noted that its tested Imperia cannot be cleaned with water. Follow the exact instructions for the current model, remove dried dough only as directed, and keep moisture away from traditional metal rollers and cutters.

5. Philips 7000 Series Pasta Maker: best automatic extruder

Verdict: Choose the Philips 7000 Series if you value automatic mixing, kneading, and extrusion more than the broad sheets and manual control produced by a roller.

The Philips 7000 Series belongs in a different category from the Marcato and Imperia. The machine is designed to combine dough preparation with extrusion through shaping discs, making it suitable for users who want spaghetti, tube shapes, shells, and other included formats with less manual work.

Automatic convenience comes with a trade-off: recipe ratios matter much more. Food Network’s testing found that manual machines were more flexible across dough recipes, while electric extruders performed best when users followed the supplied formulas. A wet or dry dough can look like a machine failure when the real problem is hydration, so test the manufacturer’s recipe before changing the flour or liquid ratio.

The exact Philips 7000 Series model available in the United States must be confirmed before buying. Philips has multiple generations and regional product pages, and the number and type of included discs, voltage, warranty, capacity, and price can differ by market. Philips’ product documentation should be checked against the exact U.S. model number.

What is the Philips 7000 Series not good at?

The Philips 7000 Series is not the natural choice for broad lasagna sheets or ravioli sheets. It also has more removable parts and internal surfaces to clean than a basic roller. Choose the machine for automation and extruded-shape variety, not because “automatic” means every kind of pasta is easier.

6. Philips Compact Pasta and Noodle Maker: best compact automatic option

Verdict: Choose the Philips Compact Pasta and Noodle Maker if you want automatic extrusion in a smaller, more approachable format and can accept potentially lower capacity or fewer shapes than a larger model.

The Compact model is aimed at beginners and smaller kitchens. Like the 7000 Series, it is an automatic extruder rather than a sheet roller: the machine handles the mixing and kneading workflow and pushes dough through the supplied shaping discs.

The compact format may make automatic pasta more practical for a household that lacks room for a dedicated roller, clamp, drying rack, and separate storage boxes. The trade-off is that the Compact model may not offer the same batch size or shape selection as the 7000 Series. Confirm the current model number, included discs, U.S. voltage, warranty, and availability before purchase because Philips product generations vary by market.

The Compact machine is most suitable for a beginner who wants to follow supplied recipes. It is less suitable for someone who mainly makes ravioli, lasagna sheets, or custom-thickness noodles, because those jobs call for an adjustable roller.

How were the pasta makers evaluated?

A credible test should separate manufacturer specifications from observed performance and should test rollers and extruders according to the jobs they are designed to perform. The following protocol is the minimum useful framework for comparing these six finalists.

Which doughs should be tested?

Use at least two standardized egg doughs: one made with all-purpose flour to represent common U.S. pantry ingredients and one made with 00 flour to test a softer, traditional formulation. An optional third test can use eggless dough for vegan pasta and recipes commonly used with extruders.

Keep flour weight, egg weight, hydration, resting time, number of passes, dusting flour, ambient temperature, and humidity consistent. A machine should not be called “best for all doughs” after only one formula.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should be measured on a roller?

  • Time from dough ball to a usable sheet.
  • Number of passes needed to create a smooth sheet.
  • Sheet tearing, sticking, clogging, and edge quality.
  • Thickness consistency across the sheet.
  • Ease of changing and reading thickness settings.
  • Ease of switching cutters and separating strands.
  • Counter stability, clamp security, wobbling, and lifting.
  • Usable sheet width and the largest convenient batch.
  • Noise or heat only when measured with a consistent method.
  • Cleanup time, dried dough in cutters, and storage requirements.

What should be measured on an extruder?

Test the manufacturer-supplied recipe first, then test a slightly wetter and slightly drier dough within reasonable limits. Use at least two dies, such as spaghetti and a tube or shell shape. Record extrusion speed, strand breakage, surface texture, dough left inside, cleaning time, and whether the result was caused by the recipe or the hardware.

How much does a complete pasta-making setup cost?

The complete cost includes more than the base machine. A realistic setup may require a roller, crank or motor, clamp, cutters or dies, drying rack, ravioli tool, replacement parts, and storage. A KitchenAid attachment also requires a compatible stand mixer, while a Pastadrive purchase requires a compatible Marcato machine.

Retail prices in this category are volatile and regional. Food Network, Bon Appétit, and Epicurious display prices that should be treated as prices observed at publication or crawl, not permanent U.S. MSRP. Use a dated “price at testing” field, separate MSRP from sale price, and verify the seller before linking to a purchase page.

Purchase decision Costs to include Who may benefit
Manual roller first Machine, clamp, included cutters, and optional accessories Occasional or traditional pasta makers
Manual roller with later motor Compatible machine plus Pastadrive or another approved motor Buyers who want a lower initial commitment and an upgrade path
Complete motorized roller Motorized machine, cutters, and storage for the motor Frequent users and solo cooks
KitchenAid attachment Attachment plus a compatible KitchenAid stand mixer if one is not already owned Existing KitchenAid owners with limited counter space
Automatic extruder Machine, included dies, recipe ingredients, and cleaning/storage space Families, beginners, and cooks who prefer extruded shapes

How should you choose between the six pasta makers?

If your priority is… Choose… Why
Best control over lasagna or ravioli sheets Marcato Atlas 150 Adjustable roller with a broad working width and included cutters
Hands-free rolling Marcato Atlasmotor or compatible Atlas with Pastadrive Motor drives the roller while both hands handle the sheet
Using equipment already on the counter KitchenAid 3-Piece Set Uses a compatible stand mixer’s power hub
A traditional alternative to Marcato Imperia Metal manual roller with a different traditional design and feel
Automatic shapes and larger batches Philips 7000 Series Mixes, kneads, and extrudes through supplied dies
Compact automatic operation Philips Compact Automatic extrusion in a smaller format, subject to model capacity

For limited hand mobility, a motorized roller or automatic extruder may be easier than a hand-crank machine, but the two options solve different problems. The motorized roller still requires the user to prepare, portion, and guide dough; the extruder reduces those steps but demands closer attention to recipe ratios and cleanup.

How do you use a manual pasta roller without tearing the dough?

  1. Make the dough and let it rest according to the recipe.
  2. Divide the dough into manageable portions.
  3. Flatten each portion by hand before feeding it into the roller.
  4. Start at the widest setting rather than forcing an unflattened ball into a narrow gap.
  5. Pass the dough through until the sheet becomes smooth.
  6. Reduce the thickness gradually instead of jumping immediately to the thinnest setting.
  7. Dust lightly when needed; excessive flour can make the dough difficult to seal or cook properly.
  8. Cut or shape the finished sheet, then dry it briefly or cook it immediately.

A first pass that is too thick, wet, or uneven can cause tearing, clogging, or motor strain. If a sheet sticks, stop feeding it, withdraw it without forcing, dust lightly, and rework a small portion before continuing.

How do you troubleshoot sticking, tearing, and extruder failures?

Why is pasta dough sticking to the rollers?

Sticky pasta dough is usually too wet for the current flour, rest, or machine setting. Stop feeding the dough, remove it without forcing it, dust it lightly, and allow an unusually soft dough to rest briefly before reworking a small portion. Do not force a sticky mass through a cutter.

Why is pasta dough cracking or breaking?

Cracking and fragmented strands usually indicate dough that is too dry, insufficiently rested, or being rolled too aggressively. Re-knead with a small amount of moisture, rest the dough, and reduce thickness gradually. For an automatic extruder, return to the supplied recipe ratios before experimenting.

Why is the manual machine moving on the counter?

Confirm that the clamp is fully engaged and that the counter is within the clamp’s clearance. A non-slip mat can help only if it does not interfere with the clamp. Do not hold the machine with one hand while cranking if that creates a pinch risk; a motorized configuration may be safer and more practical.

Why is an automatic extruder jamming?

An extruder can jam when hydration, batch size, or dough preparation does not match the manufacturer’s recipe. Test the official formula first and record whether the failure occurs with the official recipe, an improvised recipe, an oversized batch, or insufficiently rested dough. That distinction prevents a recipe problem from being mislabeled as a hardware defect.

Can pasta makers be washed with water?

Do not apply one cleaning rule to every pasta maker. Traditional metal rollers and cutters may be damaged by immersion or improper washing, while automatic machines have removable parts and internal crevices that require model-specific instructions. Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning guidance, let removable parts dry completely, and remove dried dough as directed.

Are cheap pasta makers worth buying?

A low price is not enough reason to choose an unfamiliar pasta maker. Confirm that the seller provides a clear warranty, replacement cutters or dies, a working clamp, and manufacturer support. Epicurious warned readers about poorly manufactured copycats in this category, so a cheap marketplace listing with unclear provenance can cost more if the machine jams or replacement parts are unavailable.

The Hamilton Beach Electric Pasta Maker is a possible value test rather than a recommended winner based on the available evidence. Epicurious found the Hamilton Beach model slow, noisy, and prone to jamming, with a selector cover that felt fragile in testing. That result is why the six-product lineup prioritizes distinct, better-supported use cases instead of adding a seventh generic machine.

Final buying recommendations

Buy the Marcato Atlas 150 for the best all-around manual roller and the clearest path from occasional use to more serious sheet-pasta making. Buy the Marcato Atlasmotor or a verified compatible Atlas and Pastadrive when hands-free rolling matters. Buy the KitchenAid attachment only when a compatible mixer is already owned.

Choose Imperia as a traditional alternative after considering its reported sensitivity to all-purpose flour. Choose the Philips 7000 Series for automatic extrusion and more shape variety, or the Philips Compact for a smaller automatic setup. Before ordering any model, verify the exact U.S. version, included cutters or dies, current dated price, cleaning instructions, warranty, and replacement-part support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Marcato Atlas 150 better than the Imperia pasta maker?

The Marcato Atlas 150 is the safer general recommendation because cited testing found smoother operation and better handling across common dough conditions. Imperia remains a credible traditional alternative, but Bon Appétit reported that its tested unit jammed with all-purpose flour, while Food Network reported tearing and sticking on thinner settings.

What is the best pasta maker for someone with a KitchenAid mixer?

The KitchenAid 3-Piece Pasta Roller & Cutter Set is the most relevant choice for someone who already owns a compatible KitchenAid stand mixer. The attachment uses the mixer’s power hub, but it is not a standalone machine and does not automatically mix, knead, or extrude dough.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are automatic pasta makers better than manual pasta rollers?

Automatic pasta makers are better for hands-off mixing, kneading, and extrusion, while manual rollers are better for broad sheets, ravioli, lasagna, and direct control over thickness. Automatic machines are generally more dependent on precise recipe ratios and require more cleanup.

Can a Marcato Pastadrive motor fit every Atlas machine?

No. Marcato says Pastadrive compatibility depends on the Atlas or Ampia machine’s production date, and some accessories are incompatible with Pastadrive. Check the exact machine generation and Marcato’s compatibility guidance before buying a used motor or older Atlas.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The Marcato Atlas 150 is the best default recommendation for rolled pasta, the motorized Marcato setup is best when hand cranking is the obstacle, and Philips is the better direction for automatic extruded shapes. Match the machine to the pasta style first, then confirm the current U.S. model, price, accessories, warranty, and cleaning requirements.
