RTINGS’s 2026 guide names five picks, but they are not five directly comparable permanent outdoor speakers: four are portable Bluetooth models, and one is a decorative lantern-style pair. For a fixed patio or yard, consider installed speakers separately; they need mounting and, in passive systems, an amplifier and speaker wire.
RTINGS’s five picks: four portable speakers and a lantern pair
The categories below are RTINGS’s editorial recommendations, not a standardized head-to-head ranking of equivalent products. RTINGS says it has tested over 190 speakers; its outdoor guide focuses on portable models and does not cover speakers designed for permanent outdoor installation. Best overall portable: JBL Boombox 4
RTINGS names the JBL Boombox 4 its best outdoor speaker tested. The guide reports an IP68 rating, float capability, a built-in handle, more than 40 hours of battery life, and notably strong bass. Its larger size is the main tradeoff. RTINGS contrasts it with the lighter Bose SoundLink Max, which it says is less loud and has a shorter reported battery life.
Upper mid-range: Ultimate Ears EPICBOOM
RTINGS reports IP67 protection, a handle, about 15 hours of battery life, Adaptive EQ, and more low-bass output than smaller products. The EPICBOOM is larger and has a shorter reported runtime than the JBL Boombox 4.

Mid-range: LG xboom Bounce
RTINGS reports an IP67 rating, MIL-STD-810H testing, float capability, and 25 hours of battery life. Compared with the EPICBOOM, the guide describes it as less loud and less bass-heavy. Its practical features include physical controls, a built-in microphone, voice-assistant support, and a removable battery.
Budget portable: Ultimate Ears WONDERBOOM 4
RTINGS reports IP67 protection, float capability, more than 13 hours of battery life, USB-C charging, a carrying strap, and an outdoor mode. Its compact size limits deep bass. The guide also notes that it has no companion app or EQ.
Decorative lantern pick: Pohopa EF-B210G
RTINGS describes the Pohopa EF-B210G as a Bluetooth lantern-style pair designed for continuous outdoor use, with built-in lights and an IP54 rating. Its appearance is a priority over fidelity, so the guide recommends it for casual listening rather than critical listening.

For a fixed patio, compare installed speakers separately
Installed speakers solve a different problem from portable Bluetooth models: they stay in place and can be positioned to cover a set area, but setup may involve mounting, wiring, and an amplifier. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 roundup selects the Polk Atrium 4 as its best installation speaker and the Klipsch AW-650 as a bass-focused option. What a passive outdoor setup requires
Sonos’s Sonos/Sonance Outdoor pair illustrates the requirements of a manufacturer-documented passive system. Sonos lists the pair as IP66, with an operating range of -13°F to 149°F (-25°C to 65°C), and says it is engineered to withstand humidity, water, salt spray, heat, UV rays, and freezing temperatures. The product page specifies a compatible amplifier, optimized for Sonos Amp, and speaker wire of 16 gauge or larger. How to choose between portable and installed speakers
1. Decide whether the speaker stays put
Tom’s Guide frames the choice as: “Do I want this permanently affixed to my house, or do I want something that I can take with me on a camping trip?” If you want to move a speaker between a patio, pool, or campsite, a portable model avoids installation. A fixed passive pair needs an amplifier and speaker wire; a portable model needs charging and a place to store it.
2. Match the protection to the exposure
Check the exact model’s IP rating and the manufacturer’s installation and care instructions. The ratings in the picks above are model-specific, not a general guarantee that a speaker can be left outdoors indefinitely. RTINGS specifically advises bringing portable speakers inside unless their manufacturer says otherwise.
3. Plan for the listening area
Consider patio size, listening distance, background noise, and whether people will listen from different angles. Larger portable speakers can offer more output and bass but are heavier. Installed pairs can be positioned to serve a fixed area.

4. Compare power needs and realistic runtime
For portable speakers, compare the reported battery life with how and where you listen; published runtimes are guide or manufacturer claims and depend on use conditions. For installed systems, account for the amplifier, cable run, mounting, and installation needs rather than looking for a battery-life figure.
5. Choose the sound and convenience tradeoffs that matter
Decide whether your priority is bass, speech and vocal clarity, portability, app-based EQ, simple physical controls, or decorative lighting. The five RTINGS picks emphasize different combinations of those features rather than offering one universally best format.
