The most tangible next steps in spatial computing, virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR) for 2026 are not one universal metaverse. They are three practical uses: digital twins for distributed product design, group VR experiences in cultural venues, and mixed-reality telehealth for workers far from shore. Each tackles a different constraint—collaboration across locations, operating VR for groups, or delivering care over limited connectivity.

These examples come from a Fast Company feature published October 6, 2026. Its figures describe company deployments and reported outcomes, not independently audited comparisons. The broader platform picture is still developing: Meta and Apple are announcing tools and hardware plans, but those announcements do not establish mass adoption.

What are the next big things in spatial computing for 2026?

The three examples point to a shift from immersive technology as a destination to immersive tools embedded in specific workflows. Dassault Systèmes applies spatial interfaces to design reviews; Excurio makes VR a shared venue experience; and Veyond Metaverse applies mixed reality to remote medical support. Fast Company’s report is the source for the company-specific deployment and outcome claims below.

Example Primary use Reported evidence
Dassault Systèmes 3DLive Spatial design and digital-twin reviews One aerospace review connected participants on three continents; the company reported approval time cut in half and $450,000 saved in travel costs. Fast Company, October 6, 2026.
Excurio LBXR Pulse Venue-based group VR Reported support for up to 130 simultaneous users and deployment at 25 venues in 17 countries. Fast Company, October 6, 2026.
Veyond Metaverse OceanMD Remote healthcare for maritime and offshore workers Designed for 100 kbps connections; Fast Company reported pilots in West Africa and Brazilian offshore operations. Fast Company, October 6, 2026.

1. Spatial design: digital twins that teams can review together

Dassault Systèmes’ 3DLive uses Apple Vision Pro to let people engage with digital twins of products, processes, and spaces. A digital twin is a virtual representation used to examine or work with a real or proposed object or environment. The reported applications include engineering electric vehicles and testing surgical instruments.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The clearest example in Fast Company’s account is an aerospace company reviewing an aircraft interior with colleagues on three continents. The feature says the process halved approval time and saved $450,000 in travel costs. It does not name the customer, so the result should be understood as one reported case, not a general expected return or an independently verified benchmark.

What makes this useful

  • Teams can examine the same spatial design across locations rather than relying only on conventional screens or travel.
  • Reviewing an immersive model may help stakeholders assess how a designed space or object is experienced, not just how it appears in drawings.
  • Its value depends on fidelity, the review workflow, and how well the system works with existing design data; the report does not provide comparative vendor results.

2. Venue VR: shared experiences beyond gaming

Excurio’s LBXR Pulse is designed for museums, cultural institutions, entertainment venues, and other organizations that want visitors to experience VR on site. Unlike a headset bought for individual home use, a venue system has to accommodate groups, content changes, and the practical demands of operating a public attraction.

Fast Company reports that LBXR Pulse can support up to 130 users simultaneously across multiple concurrent experiences. It also reports use at 25 venues in 17 countries, naming the Musée d’Orsay and Harvard University’s Giza Project among content partners. These are figures and examples attributed to the feature, not audited measures of capacity or market reach.

What venues need to compare

  • Concurrent capacity: how many visitors can participate at once, and whether capacity changes when experiences differ.
  • Operations: installation, headset handling, staff training, hygiene, and the ability to keep sessions moving.
  • Content: available experiences, rights, partners, and whether content suits the venue’s audience.
  • Deployment fit: the venue types already served and the support available in the venue’s region.

The feature does not provide apples-to-apples data for competing platforms, so Excurio’s reported scale is not enough by itself to establish that it is the best option for any particular institution.

3. Mixed reality for remote care where bandwidth is scarce

Veyond Metaverse’s OceanMD is a telehealth platform for seafarers and offshore workers. It connects people away from shore with onshore medical professionals wearing mixed-reality headsets. Fast Company says the system is designed to operate at 100 kbps, a constraint relevant to slow satellite links at sea, and reports pilots in West Africa and Brazilian offshore operations.

The same feature says Medaire, an International SOS company, secured a five-year exclusive agreement in May 2026 for global civilian aviation. It also places the use case in context with an estimate of more than 2 million seafarers or offshore-rig workers. Both the agreement detail and workforce estimate are reported by Fast Company; they are not independently established here.

What is mixed reality used for?

Mixed reality places virtual elements in relation to the physical environment, allowing the experience to respond to real surroundings. Meta’s developer documentation defines it this way: “Mixed Reality, or MR, blends virtual objects with a user’s physical environment, enabling experiences that respond to and integrate with the real world.” Meta Horizon OS Developers, “Mixed Reality Experience and Use Cases,” updated April 13, 2026.

Meta distinguishes VR, which immerses the user in a virtual world, from augmented reality (AR), which overlays virtual elements on the physical world, and MR, where virtual elements interact with the user and physical space. It identifies Quest 3 and Quest 3S as devices with higher-resolution color passthrough and a dedicated depth sensor, features that support context-aware MR interactions. That describes platform capability, not proof that a particular medical workflow is clinically effective.

What a remote-care deployment has to get right

  • Connectivity: confirm that the network available at the worksite meets the system’s requirements in real operating conditions.
  • Clinical workflow: establish how a clinician assesses the situation, what the remote worker can safely do, and when to escalate or arrange in-person care.
  • Equipment and support: verify headset and peripheral compatibility, training, maintenance, and who supports workers across the service area.
  • Coverage: distinguish a pilot or a contract from demonstrated availability at every location implied by a service description.

Fast Company’s account describes OceanMD’s bandwidth target and selected pilots, but does not compare it with alternative systems or provide clinical outcome data.

How VR and MR platforms are changing

The use cases depend on more than headsets: they need software, content, workflows, and support. Meta’s February 2026 developer State of the Union described a separation of its Quest VR platform from its Worlds platform, continued investment in VR hardware, and plans to target different audience segments. Meta reported that third-party apps accounted for 86% of effective time spent in VR headsets and that it invested nearly $150 million in VR developer programs in 2025. These are Meta-reported platform figures, not independent market measurements. The post’s US headset unit-share footnote cites Circana’s Retail Tracking Service for the 12 months ending December 2025. Meta Horizon OS Developers, “State of the Union 2026,” February 19, 2026.

At Connect 2026, Meta announced Meta VR Glasses, saying they weigh about 100 grams, use eyes and hands as primary input, and run the same operating system, Store, and SDKs as Meta Quest. Meta said the glasses would ship in spring 2027; they are therefore an announced future product, not a device available in 2026. Touch Plus controllers are supported but sold separately. Meta gives the glasses’ approximate field of view as 70 by 66 degrees, compared with 110 by 96 degrees for Quest 3. Meta, Connect 2026 announcement.

Meta’s September 2026 Connect recap also described a planned expansion of Meta Ray-Ban Display to the UK, Canada, France, Italy, and Germany, along with media and sports partnerships for Meta VR Glasses. These are company announcements and rollout plans that may change. Meta, “Connect 2026 recap”.

Apple’s WWDC26 developer session covers visionOS 27 routes for compatible iOS and iPadOS apps, native spatial apps, and Mac or PC experiences using Spatial Preview or foveated streaming. It also discusses RealityKit capabilities, object tracking, spatial accessories, and immersive media tools. This shows where Apple is directing developers, not how widely consumers or businesses have adopted those experiences. Apple, WWDC26 developer sessions.

How to judge whether an immersive use case is ready

These examples are not interchangeable, and a headline capacity or savings figure cannot answer whether a deployment will work for a particular organization. Match the evaluation to the operational problem:

  • For design teams: test model fidelity and review usability; check integration with current design data; and measure approval time and travel against a defined baseline.
  • For venues: validate group capacity, simultaneous experience support, content rights, installation needs, staff workload, and visitor flow.
  • For remote care: verify bandwidth at the actual site, clinician availability, equipment compatibility, clinical escalation procedures, and geographic coverage.

In each case, ask whether the cited result comes from a specific customer or pilot, who measured it, and whether the same conditions apply to the proposed deployment. The available examples establish concrete uses and company-reported details; they do not provide a cross-vendor performance comparison or market-wide adoption measure.
