Did Apple release the redesigned M4 Mac mini?
Yes. On October 29, 2024, Apple announced redesigned Mac mini configurations with M4 and M4 Pro chips. Apple said the computer measures five by five inches and has less than half the footprint of the previous design. The company announced customer availability beginning November 8, 2024. Apple’s announcement confirms the final product details.
The “smallest ever” framing refers to the reported redesign, not to a verified ranking against every Apple computer or to the newest generation in 2026. The cited sources establish the 2024 model’s dimensions and launch, but not current generation status or availability by market.
How small is it, and is it the size of an Apple TV?
Apple’s published footprint is five inches by five inches. The August 8, 2024, MacRumors report by Hartley Charlton, citing Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, said the redesigned computer would approach the size of an Apple TV. That was a pre-release comparison, not Apple’s final measurement. For the shipped model, the five-by-five-inch dimensions are the more precise description.

Apple also said the redesign’s footprint is less than half that of the previous design. Its updated thermal architecture directs air through different levels of the system and vents it through the foot. The computer remains a desktop Mac, so its small enclosure does not make it an all-in-one: a display and input devices may be needed for a usable setup.
What changed from the early report to the final model?
The early report described a smaller aluminum-shell Mac mini with M4 and M4 Pro options. It also said Apple had tested a rear layout with at least three USB-C ports and HDMI. Those were reported pre-release details, not final specifications. Apple’s announcement and technical specifications give the shipped configuration:

What ports and displays do the M4 and M4 Pro support?
Both configurations have two USB-C ports and a headphone jack on the front, plus HDMI and Gigabit Ethernet on the rear. Ethernet can be configured up to 10Gb. The rear Thunderbolt generation and display capacity vary by model:

These are Apple’s supported display configurations; check the technical specifications for the selected configuration and your intended displays before choosing cables, docks, or external storage. A connector that fits is not by itself a guarantee that a particular multi-display setup will work as intended.
Which 2024 configuration makes more sense?
Choose M4 for a simpler desktop setup
The M4 is the more direct fit if your workload and display arrangement fit its capacity and Thunderbolt 4 is sufficient. It supports up to two 6K displays and one 5K display, according to Apple. Its three rear Thunderbolt 4 ports sit alongside HDMI and Gigabit Ethernet, while the two front USB-C ports provide convenient access for peripherals.

Consider M4 Pro for higher-end display and connectivity needs
M4 Pro is the relevant option if you need Apple’s stated support for up to three 6K displays at 60Hz or specifically need the three rear Thunderbolt 5 ports. The case’s small size does not determine which model suits your setup; match chip, memory configuration, displays, and peripherals to the work you actually do.
Apple claimed up to 1.8 times faster CPU performance and up to 2.2 times faster GPU performance versus the M1 Mac mini. Those are Apple’s own comparison claims, not independent test results; performance varies with the workload and test conditions. They should not be treated as a general promise about every task.
What did the Mac mini cost at launch?
Apple’s October 2024 U.S. announcement listed these launch starting prices. They are historical launch prices, not current 2026 prices or a statement about present inventory.

What else is needed for a compact Mac mini setup?
The Mac mini is the computer, not a complete desktop kit. Plan for a compatible display, keyboard, and mouse if you do not already have them. A Thunderbolt cable or external storage may be useful depending on your devices and workflow; confirm compatibility with the exact M4 or M4 Pro configuration before buying. Apple’s launch announcement listed accessory categories, but that does not establish that any particular accessory is included with every purchase.
