A website can show “username taken” before you submit because the page sends the name to the site as you type, and the server checks its current records. The response comes back to the form, which displays the result. It is a quick availability check—not a reservation—so the site must check again when you submit.

What happens between typing and the message

  1. Your browser checks local rules. It can immediately test rules it already knows, such as whether the value has an allowed format.
  2. The page requests a server check. JavaScript sends the username to the website asynchronously, without requiring a full page reload. The server checks whether that value is already in use.
  3. The form displays the response. The site can report that the name is available or taken. If it cannot complete the check, it can instead show that availability could not be confirmed. This browser-to-server pattern is commonly called Ajax; see the technical book excerpt describing an Ajax username check.

Formatting rules can be checked in the browser because they do not depend on changing account data. Uniqueness is different: only the service can check its current records. Angular’s guide to asynchronous form validation documents this kind of server-dependent check, including pending state and cancellation when the value changes.

Why the check may happen before you finish typing

The browser can start a request while you are still entering the name, but a site does not have to send one for every keystroke. It may wait until typing pauses, check when the field loses focus, or use another trigger to limit requests. There is no universal delay established by the cited guidance.

Because requests take time, the form also has to handle changing input. If you type a new value while an earlier check is still running, the earlier response may arrive last. Applying it to the new value would be misleading. A form can cancel an outdated request or ignore a response that no longer matches the field. Angular documents cancellation when a field value changes.

A well-handled form may show that a check is pending and distinguish a confirmed result from a request failure. Until the response arrives, the site does not yet know whether the server considers the name available.

“Available” does not mean reserved

An availability response describes the server’s data at the time of the check. It does not usually claim the username for you. Another person or process could register it before you submit.

The registration request must therefore enforce uniqueness again on the server. A browser-side check alone cannot guarantee the rule: users can alter or bypass page code, and two people can try to claim the same name at nearly the same time. The Matrix Client-Server API v1.9 makes the distinction explicit: checking availability does not reserve a username, and the registration operation remains decisive.

What the check can reveal about your account

If a service tells anyone whether a username or email address is registered, that response can help someone discover existing accounts. The risk varies. A public display name may not be sensitive; an email address or membership in a sensitive service may be.

W3C’s WebAuthn Level 4 draft discusses username enumeration as a privacy leak in authentication flows. OWASP’s account-enumeration testing guidance explains how different responses can help build a list of valid accounts. A service concerned about probing can restrict request rates; the Matrix API is one example of an availability endpoint with rate limiting.

The check should also be sent securely and collect only what it needs. web.dev’s security and privacy guidance recommends HTTPS and cautions against putting sensitive form values in URL query strings. The browser request is not a substitute for protecting the server endpoint or the final registration operation.

It is not browser autocomplete

Autocomplete or autofill uses information held by the browser or password manager to suggest or fill a field. A “taken” or “available” result comes from the website checking its own records. These are separate mechanisms. MDN explains how form autocomplete settings work, including that password managers may still offer to remember login fields even when a site disables autocomplete.
