How Textarea Cache is meant to help
If a browser closes unexpectedly while you are writing a long post or filling out a form, an add-on that keeps a recoverable copy can save you from retyping. Textarea Cache is designed for that purpose: saving text entered into web forms so it can be retrieved later.
The detailed description available from Mike Williams’s BetaNews review, published January 6, 2015, says the add-on saved text as the user typed, offered a cache window for retrieving entries, retained multiple entries within a configurable cache, and allowed site exceptions. Williams also reported testing browser close-and-restart recovery at that time. These are historical descriptions, not confirmation of how the current release behaves.
The current Mozilla Add-ons version history is useful for release and compatibility information, but does not provide a full feature manual. The sources available do not establish exactly which field types the current build captures, how recovery is triggered, how long it retains text, or whether it syncs data. Do not assume that every site, field, or browser failure is covered, or treat the cache as the only copy of important writing.

Install and check the current listing
Mozilla Add-ons’ version history identifies Textarea Cache as an add-on by Wildsky and gholk. Version 5.0.7 is the latest version shown there in the listing checked September 28, 2026; it was released September 19, 2025. The same history lists Firefox 109.0 and later and Android 120.0 and later as compatible. Its 5.0.7 release note says “fix: xss bug with domPurify.” Version 5.0.3, released March 16, 2025, has the note “Migrate to MV3.” See the Mozilla Add-ons version history before installing, since releases and compatibility can change.
After installation, review the add-on’s current settings and Mozilla listing rather than relying on older instructions for controls that may have changed. The sources here do not verify current cache controls or site-exception options.

Can you recover text after Firefox closes?
Possibly, but the available evidence does not establish a guaranteed recovery result for the current release. The 2015 BetaNews review described successful recovery after closing and restarting Firefox during its review, but that does not demonstrate current behavior or cover crashes, updates, operating-system shutdowns, or every website.
For important text, keep a separate copy in a document or another trusted place. A form-recovery add-on can be a fallback, not a substitute for saving work you cannot afford to lose.

Does Textarea Cache work in Private Browsing?
Firefox lets users decide whether extensions may run in Private Browsing; that access is off by default unless permission is granted. Mozilla’s Private Browsing extensions guidance explains the permission. Allowing an extension to run in a private window does not, by itself, establish what that extension stores there.
Williams’s January 6, 2015 review said: “By default Textarea Cache never saves text in Private Windows, for example, and it removes old data five minutes after Firefox has restarted (this can be increased, if you like).” That is a historical report. The current add-on’s private-window behavior and cleanup defaults are not established by the sources available. Check the current Firefox extension permissions and the add-on’s settings rather than assuming the old defaults still apply.

What to know about privacy and stored text
Recovered form text can include personal details, work material, account information, or other sensitive content. A locally saved copy may remain accessible to someone who can access your browser profile or device, a concern that is especially relevant on shared systems.
Mozilla’s WebExtensions documentation says the storage.local API stores data on the machine where an extension is installed, can be subject to storage limits, and removes its data when the extension is uninstalled. Mozilla also says extension storage is not encrypted and should not be used for confidential information. These are general facts about that API, not proof that the current Textarea Cache release uses it. See Mozilla’s storage.local documentation.

- Check the current extension settings and listing for privacy, retention, and site controls.
- If the current version offers site exclusions, consider excluding pages that handle sensitive information.
- Clear cached text when it is no longer needed, particularly on a shared device.
- Do not put confidential material into a browser extension cache on the assumption that local storage is encrypted.

It does not establish current recovery coverage, retention defaults, private-window behavior, or whether data syncs.
