Good QA does not mean testing everything. It means identifying the failures that would matter most, choosing tests that can reveal them, and making a release decision with the evidence and remaining risks clearly in view. The right amount of testing depends on the software’s purpose, audience, and consequences of failure.

Build the test strategy around risk

Start by asking what could go wrong, who would be affected, and what the consequences would be. A failed payment, an exposed private record, and a cosmetic layout defect do not carry the same risk. Prioritize tests according to the likelihood and impact of failures, then make sure each important test has a clear purpose.

ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119-1:2022 is an informative introduction to a software-testing standards series. It describes risk-based test strategy, test levels and types, design techniques, documentation, test environments and data, reporting, defect management, and tailoring. The series is intended for different forms of testing and life cycles; consult the applicable standard text when formal requirements or conformance matter. ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119-1:2022

  • Identify critical user journeys, affected users, and high-consequence failure modes.
  • Map each planned test to a risk, requirement, or decision it informs.
  • Record material gaps and residual risks rather than implying that untested areas are safe.

Use test levels for different questions

Unit, integration, and end-to-end tests provide different kinds of evidence. They complement each other; none is a substitute for the whole strategy.

Level What it checks Best fit Trade-off to consider
Unit An individual component or small unit behaves as expected. Fast feedback on logic and local changes. Does not establish that connected components or full user workflows work together.
Integration Connected units work together across an interface or dependency. Verifying important interactions without exercising the full application. Requires the relevant integrations or representative substitutes to be available and reliable.
End-to-end A complete user workflow works across the application stack. Critical journeys where the integrated experience matters. Broader dependencies can make these tests slower and less reliable than narrower checks.

Google’s testing guidance recommends a mix suited to the system: smaller component tests, integration checks, and end-to-end coverage focused on important workflows. It notes that integration tests typically have fewer dependencies and can be faster and more reliable than full end-to-end tests. Its older 70/20/10 unit/integration/end-to-end split was presented as a first guess, not a universal target or independently validated industry benchmark. Google Testing Blog: Test Desiderata

Choose techniques to match the behavior

Pick a test-design technique based on what you need to learn. ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119-4 documents test-design techniques; the following are useful examples, not a mandatory checklist.

  • Boundary-value analysis: Probe values at, just below, and just above a limit when behavior changes near that limit.
  • Equivalence partitioning: Group inputs expected to behave alike and sample representative values from each group.
  • Decision tables: Test combinations of conditions and resulting actions when rules depend on several inputs.
  • Use-case testing: Check behavior through realistic user goals and workflows.
  • Exploratory testing: Investigate the product while learning from observed behavior, using a clear charter or question to guide the session.
  • Checklist-based testing and error guessing: Apply known failure patterns and reminders where they help expose omissions.

A 2017–18 ISTQB survey with more than 2,000 responses from 92 countries reported use-case testing, exploratory testing, boundary-value analysis, checklist-based testing, and error guessing among the most common test-design techniques in its summary. That is historical survey context, not a measure of current prevalence. ISTQB survey results

Combine scripted checks with exploratory work

Automated and scripted tests are useful for repeatable checks, regression detection, and consistent evidence. Exploratory testing can help investigate behavior that is difficult to specify in advance or areas where assumptions may be wrong. Use each where it addresses a real risk, and keep retesting and regression testing distinct: retesting checks whether a reported defect is fixed; regression testing looks for unintended effects elsewhere.

Testing should begin before a release review. Smaller, earlier checks can surface regressions sooner and reduce the difficulty of later debugging. Google’s engineering guidance is practitioner advice, not a controlled study. Google Testing Blog: Test Desiderata

Do not mistake coverage or passing tests for proof

A passing suite shows that the tests performed passed under their conditions. It does not prove that the software has no defects. Code coverage can show which code structures tests exercised, but it is not the same as coverage of user risks, behavior, or correctness. Interpret a coverage figure against defined test objectives and pair it with evidence about critical workflows and relevant quality attributes.

Exhaustive testing is generally impractical, so teams sample and prioritize. ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119 frames risk-based testing as a basis for focus. At release time, describe what was tested, the applicable test basis, important failures, material gaps, and residual risk; do not use one percentage as a proxy for release quality. Maintain environments, test data, and reporting

Test results are only useful when their conditions are understood. Manage test environments and data deliberately, and make communications and defect or incident reporting part of the testing work. When a result cannot be reproduced or depends on a particular environment, record that context so the team can interpret it rather than treating the result as universal.

ISO’s overview describes environment and data management, reporting, and defect management as supporting activities. Static reviews are covered separately by ISO/IEC 20246, according to the 29119 series overview.

Handle AI-based systems with explicit evaluation criteria

AI-based systems can make expected results and acceptance criteria harder to define, creating a test-oracle problem: a team may not have one simple expected output for every input. State what acceptable behavior means, how it will be evaluated, and where uncertainty remains. ISO/IEC TR 29119-11:2020 discusses testing AI-based systems, including black-box and neural-network white-box approaches. The official listing gives a November 2020 publication date and marks the report as under review, so check its current status before treating it as the latest guidance. ISO/IEC TR 29119-11:2020

Compare testing options by decision value

When choosing between test approaches, tools, or levels, compare what they contribute to a concrete decision rather than counting tests in isolation.

  • Risk addressed: Which failure mode, user journey, or quality attribute is covered?
  • Feedback speed and reliability: What dependencies and environment are needed, and how repeatable is the result?
  • Scope and realism: Is the check about a component, connected components, or an actual user journey?
  • Maintenance cost: How often will data, environments, fixtures, or assertions need updates?
  • Decision value: Could the result change a release, remediation, or investigation decision?

Screenshot testing without manual browser setup

For visual QA, a browser screenshot can help inspect a page or preserve a rendered state. A do-it-yourself workflow is to open the page in a browser, set the required viewport and state, dismiss or account for overlays, capture the screen, and inspect the resulting image. That method is useful when you need direct control of a particular browser session; remember that a screenshot alone does not establish functional correctness or replace other risk-based tests.

Or skip the browser setup:

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its clean-shot steps can accept cookie/consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response reports the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. See ScreenshotNeo and the API documentation.

Example cURL request:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Common QA mistakes to avoid

  • Promising exhaustive coverage: Testing is necessarily selective; prioritize by risk and state the remaining gaps.
  • Making end-to-end tests carry the whole strategy: Use narrower checks for fast, dependable feedback and reserve full workflows for critical journeys.
  • Applying a fixed test-pyramid ratio everywhere: Choose a mix suited to the system instead of treating an older heuristic as a rule.
  • Treating code coverage as risk coverage: Pair structural coverage with evidence about behavior, journeys, and relevant quality attributes.
  • Waiting until late review to test: Begin suitable checks early so regressions are found closer to the change that caused them.
  • Assuming AI outputs have one deterministic expected answer: Define the acceptance method and uncertainty explicitly.

Make the release decision from evidence

There is no universal number of tests or percentage that qualifies every release. Decide whether the evidence addresses the product’s important risks, whether remaining failures and gaps are understood, and whether the residual risk is acceptable for the intended users and release context. Keep the rationale alongside the results so that a green suite is not mistaken for certainty.

Frequently Asked Questions
