TECNO’s 4.9mm modular-phone concept has two clear advantages over the iPhone Air: it was reported to be thinner than Apple’s 5.6mm phone, and it can accept magnetic add-on modules such as battery packs and camera attachments. Those are advantages of a trade-show prototype, not evidence that TECNO has a better phone to buy. The concept has no wired charging port, and TECNO has not confirmed a consumer launch.
How the TECNO concept compares with the iPhone Air
| Aspect | TECNO modular concept | iPhone Air |
|---|---|---|
| Thickness | 4.9mm prototype, as reported by Android Authority on March 3, 2026. Source | 5.6mm, in the same Android Authority comparison. Source |
| Expandability | Demonstrated magnetic attachments included battery and camera modules. Source | No comparable modular system is established by the cited coverage. |
| Charging and ports | The hands-on prototype had no wired port and relied on wireless charging. Source | Not compared in the cited hands-on coverage. |
| Retail availability and price | Not established; TECNO presented a concept platform. Source | Not addressed by this comparison. |
Advantage 1: TECNO’s prototype is thinner
Android Authority’s March 3, 2026 hands-on put TECNO’s prototype at 4.9mm and the iPhone Air at 5.6mm. That is a thickness comparison, not a broad verdict on build quality, battery life, durability, cameras, performance, or value. TECNO’s figure describes the concept shown at MWC, and may not represent a final product.
Advantage 2: the phone can change with magnetic modules
TECNO’s more distinctive idea is a magnetic attachment system: instead of treating a thin phone as a fixed object, the concept lets users add hardware for a particular task. Demonstrated attachments included a wallet and kickstand, battery packs, a camera body, a telephoto lens, and an action-camera module. Android Authority saw a 3,000mAh battery module and reported that a second pack could be stacked; those are details of the demonstration, not confirmed retail specifications. TECNO’s February 25 announcement described a 4.9mm base phone, a 4.5mm power-bank module, eight modular zones, and “around ten” modules. It said magnets align and secure attachments, pogo-pin connectors deliver power, and data links can use Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or mmWave. In its March 3 recap, TECNO described the ATOM and MODA design interpretations and a suite of more than a dozen components. These are company descriptions from different dates, not a single confirmed accessory bundle. TECNO’s February 25 announcement · TECNO’s March 3 recap

- Designed to Be Repaired, Not Replaced: The Fairphone Gen. 6+ is built around a 12-part modular design, so you can swap the battery, screen, speaker, or cameras yourself with just a screwdriver instead of replacing the whole phone. It's backed by a hardware warranty of up to five years and software support through 2033.
- Smooth Performance, Serious Durability: Powered by Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 and 12GB RAM, keeping apps fast and multitasking smooth. The 120Hz OLED display makes scrolling feel buttery, not choppy, and Gorilla Glass 7i plus IP55 splash-resistant means it can handle what your last phone couldn't. There's 256GB built in (expandable up to 2TB), so you're never trading photos for space.
- Less Noise, More You: Fairphone Moments lets you switch between full Android and a distraction-free mode with up to five essential apps of your choice. Working, traveling, or spending time with the people who matter - you decide what shows up on your screen, and what stays out of reach.
- A Phone That Matches Your Values: The Fairphone contains 51% fair and recycled materials by total weight, is assembled using renewable energy, and supports living wages for factory workers. Robust everyday performance, without pretending the supply chain doesn't matter.
- US Carrier Compatibility: This Android smartphone supports AT&T and T-Mobile, and supported MVNOs on those networks. It is not supported on Verizon or Verizon-network MVNOs. 5G speeds require a 5G-enabled SIM/eSIM and supporting data plan, and availability varies by carrier and location.
The trade-offs that keep this from being a buying comparison
No wired charging port
The demonstrated phone had no USB-C or other port and charged wirelessly, according to Android Authority. A design that depends on wireless charging is a real constraint for anyone who expects to charge by cable or connect wired accessories. Android Authority hands-on
Attachments add bulk and raise practical questions
Engadget noted that a very thin base leaves little room for its own battery, while add-on modules make the assembled device thicker. Carrying the right module and attaching it securely in everyday pocket use are practical questions that a brief trade-show demonstration cannot settle. Engadget also described the telephoto housing as heavy and glitchy during its demonstration; that observation applies to the prototype shown, not necessarily to a future product. Compatibility and support are not established
TECNO described the interface as proprietary while expressing the possibility of solutions beyond its own ecosystem. That is not confirmation of cross-brand compatibility. The available announcements and hands-on reports do not establish a retail launch, final model name or specifications, price, regional availability, accessory pricing, warranty, support terms, or long-term durability.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What “better than the iPhone Air” means here
The headline comparison is defensible only on two narrow points: the reported prototype is thinner, and its modular design offers a kind of expandability not covered as an iPhone Air feature in these reports. Neither point establishes that the concept is a better everyday phone. Until TECNO confirms a product and its final details, there is no reliable basis for comparing overall value or recommending it as an alternative.
