You can often connect an existing test suite to LAVA without rewriting its test logic: adapt the runner’s reporting layer to emit recognizable per-test signals in its output. Tim Orling’s 2018 presentation, “Teaching Your Test Framework to Speak LAVA”, demonstrates that approach with pytest, BATS, and OpenEmbedded ptest. Its code is historical, however—not a guide to current API compatibility.
How does a test framework communicate results to LAVA?
The presentation’s central idea is to make the test runner print structured markers that identify individual test cases and their outcomes. In the examples, those markers are:
LAVA_SIGNAL_STARTTCwhen a test case starts.LAVA_SIGNAL_ENDTCwhen it ends.LAVA_SIGNAL_TESTCASEfollowed by a test-case ID and a result such aspassorfail.
LAVA can then turn the emitted signals into individual result records. As Orling puts it in the 2018 presentation, “Once the test run has begun, LAVA is just observing.” Treat that as a description of the approach shown in the talk, not a guarantee about every current LAVA release.
The practical work is therefore usually an adapter: capture the framework’s case names and outcomes, map them to the result vocabulary used by the integration, and print the expected signals where LAVA can read them. Test definitions specify how the run is set up and launched; they do not eliminate the need for the runner to provide recognizable output.

What the presentation shows for each framework

All three are examples from the 2018 talk. They establish the adapter pattern, not that the snippets work unchanged with current versions of LAVA, pytest, BATS, or OpenEmbedded ptest. Check the official documentation for the versions you use before copying or adapting the code.
Where should the adapter go?
Use the layer that can see both the test-case identity and its final outcome. The examples point to three possible locations:

- Framework reporting hook: useful when a framework exposes per-test reports, as in the presentation’s pytest example.
- Output formatter or runner option: useful when the runner can be taught to emit a LAVA-specific format, as in the BATS example.
- Runner modification: an option when the runner itself controls how cases and results are printed, as in the ptest example.
Keep the test logic separate when possible. The adapter should preserve each case’s name and translate its outcome consistently; otherwise, LAVA may receive output without useful per-test records.
What belongs in a LAVA test definition?
The presentation’s sample “Lava-Test Test Definition 1.0” YAML includes metadata, functional scope, device labels, and run steps. Its examples use x86 and QEMU labels. These show the kinds of context a definition can describe, but they do not establish a current hardware compatibility list or validate a particular device model.

In practice, treat the definition and the output adapter as complementary pieces: the definition describes the test job’s context and commands, while the runner’s output communicates individual cases and outcomes. Verify the syntax and supported fields against documentation for the LAVA version you deploy.
Can you add measurements as well as pass/fail results?
The talk also demonstrates output containing a MEASUREMENT field and an optional UNITS field. The framework still has to format that output so LAVA can capture it. In the presentation’s pytest example, measurements are provided through a decorator and test functions return a measurement and units.

That measurement method requires changing test cases. The talk explicitly notes that this “somewhat breaks the original intent (keep the tests unmodified for LAVA).” So distinguish ordinary outcome reporting from measurement instrumentation: the reporting-layer approach can leave test logic alone in the examples, but the demonstrated way to attach measurements does not.

- Confirm your versions. Identify the LAVA release and test framework or runner version used in your environment. The 2018 examples do not verify current APIs.
- Choose the reporting layer. Find the hook, formatter, or runner code that can access a completed test’s name and outcome.
- Define the outcome mapping. Decide how framework states such as pass, failure, skip, or expected failure should translate into the result labels your LAVA setup expects. The pytest mapping in the talk is an example, not a universal policy.
- Emit one complete record per case. Preserve a stable test-case ID and print the start, end, and result signals shown in the presentation’s pattern.
- Run through the test definition. Ensure its run steps invoke the adapted runner and that its metadata and device context match the job you intend to execute.
- Validate captured results. Confirm that LAVA records separate cases with the intended names and outcomes before relying on the integration in a larger test job.
The source for the historical examples is Tim Orling’s 2018 presentation, dated October 23, 2018, and identifying Orling with Intel Open Source Technology Center. It is useful for understanding the integration pattern, but current version-specific behavior is not established by that presentation.
