For developers, that means a more modular framework—but also a migration that can involve new packages, configuration changes, and permissions. Built-in core features still exist; they use Tauri’s reserved core: permission namespace.
Why did Tauri move functionality into plugins?
The move was intended to make Tauri more modular and give developers and contributors more room to build and evolve features independently. Tauri’s Tauri 2 roadmap described shifting many APIs into the plugin system and extending it for platform-specific code. In its Tauri 2.0 stable-release announcement, the project said transferring functionality to official plugins would make community contributions easier, attract plugin maintainers, and speed feature development.
The longer-term design is a steadier core with plugins providing access to system-specific capabilities. Tauri also added Swift and Kotlin bindings to support native plugin code on Apple and Android platforms. As the project put it, “With Tauri 2.0 we built a more advanced plugin system.”
What changed for Tauri app developers?
The shift affects more than where an API is documented. A Tauri 1 app may need changes to its JavaScript imports, Rust dependencies and initialization, configuration, and permissions. The exact work depends on which APIs and settings the app uses.

JavaScript APIs moved to plugins
The Tauri 2 migration guide says many non-core modules are no longer included in @tauri-apps/api. It lists plugin replacements for functionality including CLI, clipboard, dialog, filesystem, global shortcut, and HTTP. The former tauri module becomes core; modules such as path, event, and window remain among the core exports. Use the official Tauri 1-to-2 migration guide to map the APIs your app actually uses.
Configuration and permissions changed
The migration guide also documents configuration changes: the old package object is removed, the tauri configuration is renamed to app, the old allowlist is removed, and CLI configuration moves under plugins. Tauri 2 uses capabilities and permission identifiers, so review the permission setup for every feature your app exposes.

Core pseudo plugins use the reserved core: namespace for their permissions. These are built into Tauri and initialized by it; they are not the same as separately packaged plugin crates. The namespace was introduced as a breaking permission-identifier change during the beta-to-release-candidate transition. For a current migration, follow the Tauri 1 migration guide rather than beta upgrade instructions; consult the release-candidate announcement for that historical transition.
Plugin packages may require setup on more than one side
Replacing a former core API can require installing a plugin package and configuring it on the Rust side, the JavaScript side, or both, depending on that plugin. Follow the specific plugin’s installation and migration instructions; the general migration guide links to relevant plugin guidance.

How to approach a Tauri 1-to-2 migration
- Inventory your app’s APIs and configuration. Compare its imports, dependencies, Tauri settings, and permissions with the Tauri 1-to-2 migration guide. Identify former core APIs that now need plugins.
- Run the migration command as a starting point. The Tauri v2 CLI includes a
migratecommand that automates much of the conversion. Treat its changes as a draft, not proof that the app is fully migrated. - Review the generated diff. Check imports, package dependencies, plugin initialization, configuration keys, capabilities, and permission identifiers against the migration guide and the documentation for each plugin you adopt.
- Verify behavior on your target platforms. Check that each plugin supports the operating systems and native behavior your app needs, then test the relevant features in the migrated app.
There is no single automatic conversion that covers every app: the guide documents distinct code, configuration, and permission changes, and the required work varies with an app’s API usage and dependencies.
How to choose between plugin options
Tauri’s Features & Recipes catalog distinguishes official features from community resources and provides platform-support information. Use it as a starting point, then check the individual plugin documentation before adding a dependency.

- Platform support: Confirm support for every operating system you target in the catalog and the plugin’s own documentation.
- Stability: Tauri’s major version does not guarantee that every plugin has the same stability as core. The stable-release announcement says stability is defined per plugin; check its documentation. Tauri describes pinning updates to patch releases as an option when a project needs a steadier interface.
- Project status: Determine whether the option is an official feature or a community resource, and assess whether it meets your maintenance needs.
- Migration and permissions: Verify which API or capability it replaces, which packages and initialization steps it needs, and which permissions your app must grant.
- Native requirements: For mobile or other platform-specific behavior, verify that the plugin provides the needed implementation and behavior for your target, including any Swift or Kotlin integration.
The catalog changes over time, so its current entries and each plugin’s documentation are more useful than assuming a particular feature list will remain fixed.

Tauri’s release listing showed Tauri 2.12.0 and related core ecosystem 2.12.0 releases dated September 26, 2026. The project’s blog dates the stable Tauri 2.0 release to October 2, 2024. For the latest versions, consult the Tauri ecosystem releases and Tauri blog; plugin releases and platform support can change independently.
