Process Explorer is the better choice when investigating suspicious processes requires more than an initial look. Microsoft documents that it can show which account owns a process, inspect its open handles and loaded DLLs, and search for processes using a particular handle or DLL. Task Manager can be a convenient place to start, but the sources available here do not establish a current, version-specific feature comparison for its process details.

Neither tool can determine from a process name alone whether a program is malware. Use the viewer that matches your question, then run a Microsoft Defender scan if the concern remains.

Task Manager vs. Process Explorer: the practical difference

The important distinction is investigative depth. Process Explorer is documented for examining details associated with a selected process, including its open handles and loaded DLLs. Microsoft describes it as showing “information about which handles and DLLs processes have opened or loaded.” Its upper pane lists active processes and their owning accounts, while the lower pane can display handles or DLLs for the selected process. You can also search for processes that have a specified handle open or DLL loaded. Microsoft’s Process Explorer documentation describes these capabilities.

Task Manager is a reasonable first stop if it is already open and you want to orient yourself. However, a precise field-by-field comparison would require a current Task Manager specification; the Microsoft sources cited here do not establish which exact fields or columns are available in a particular Windows version. For a deeper look at process ownership, handles, or loaded modules, the documented case for Process Explorer is clearer.

Which tool fits your question?

Question Tool to use What it is documented to do
Who owns this process, or what handles and DLLs are associated with it? Process Explorer Shows active processes and owning accounts; its lower pane can show a selected process’s handles or DLLs, and it can search for processes with a particular handle or DLL. Microsoft Learn.
What file, Registry, process, or thread activity is happening over time? Process Monitor Captures real-time file system, Registry, process, and thread activity, with filtering, process details, logging, and process-tree inspection. Microsoft Learn.
What is configured to run at boot or login? Autoruns Lists programs configured to start automatically and the locations where they are configured. Microsoft Learn.
Could the device have malware or unwanted software? Microsoft Defender Antivirus Microsoft Support recommends updating security intelligence and running a full scan; persistent unwanted software may call for file submission or an offline scan. Microsoft Support.

A careful workflow for investigating a suspicious process

  1. Start with the question, not a verdict. Use Task Manager for initial orientation if convenient. Do not treat a process name—or its unfamiliarity—as proof that it is malicious.
  2. Open Process Explorer for deeper process details. Check the owning account, then inspect the selected process’s handles or loaded DLLs. If you have a specific handle or DLL to trace, use Process Explorer’s search for processes that have it open or loaded. Microsoft lists Process Explorer v17.14, published September 10, 2026; its page specifies Windows 11 and later for clients and Windows Server 2019 and later for servers. See the current requirements and documentation.
  3. Switch to Process Monitor when the question is about activity. If you need to observe what the process does over time—such as file system or Registry activity—Process Monitor is the relevant tool, rather than a view limited to currently displayed process details. Microsoft lists Process Monitor v4.11, published September 10, 2026; its page specifies Windows 11 and later for clients and Windows Server 2019 and later for servers. See the current requirements and documentation.
  4. Check Autoruns for a startup concern. A currently running-process inspection does not answer every question about how software starts. Autoruns is designed to show configured automatic-start entries and their configuration locations. Read Microsoft’s Sysinternals Security Utilities overview.
  5. Run a security scan if concern remains. Follow Microsoft Support’s guidance to update security intelligence and run a full Microsoft Defender Antivirus scan. If unwanted software persists, the guidance also discusses submitting files or using an offline scan. Read Microsoft’s Virus and threat protection guidance.

What not to infer from a process inspection

A process viewer provides evidence to investigate, not a definitive malware verdict. An unfamiliar name or a single observation does not by itself establish that a process is harmful. Likewise, there is no safe universal rule to terminate every unfamiliar process; if you cannot identify it confidently, use security scanning or seek qualified support rather than ending it reflexively.

Do not add an antivirus exclusion as a shortcut to make investigation easier. Microsoft warns that excluded items are not checked by real-time protection, which can leave the device and data vulnerable. Microsoft’s guidance explains exclusions and scanning options.
