Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick argues that digital delivery can be more convenient for some especially large games, including the discussion around Grand Theft Auto VI. He was not speaking for Sony: the remarks were reported from an investor Q&A, and the convenience case is his view—not proof that discs are useless or that every player prefers downloads.

What did the Take-Two CEO say about digital games?

Reports by Push Square and Video Games Chronicle attribute the comments to Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games. In the investor Q&A, he said that for some large games, “discs just – and note I said discs – don’t really make sense for the consumer.”

His reasoning was that players often need an internet connection to register or play a game anyway. If they are already connected, he argued, downloading the game is “much more convenient.” The point is about convenience and the disc’s usefulness in those cases; it does not establish that digital games are always cheaper or better, or that physical copies have no value.

What does Take-Two’s digital-sales figure mean?

Zelnick reportedly said that well over 90% of Take-Two’s business is digitally distributed. That is a figure about Take-Two in 2026, as reported by Push Square and Video Games Chronicle. It is not a statistic for Sony, all console players, or the whole games market.

#1 Best Overall
Grand Theft Auto VI - Xbox Series X|S (Code in Box, Delivers 11/12/26, Playable 11/19/26)
  • This product contains a download code inside the box — no disc is included. Customer shipments will begin arriving November 12 for pre-load; game is playable starting November 19.
  • Pre-order to receive the Vintage Vice City Pack.
  • Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.

Push Square also discusses a 98% digital-revenue figure that includes microtransactions and downloadable content. That is not a like-for-like measure of physical versus digital game sales: purchases such as virtual currency do not have a physical equivalent. It should not be read as evidence that 98% of games are sold as downloads.

How does GTA 6 fit into the discussion?

Grand Theft Auto VI is relevant because Take-Two owns Rockstar, and the reports connect Zelnick’s comments to the game’s distribution. Push Square and Video Games Chronicle describe a digital release, with a boxed version potentially offering a download code rather than a disc. Those format details come from the reporting, not an independently reviewed publisher announcement.

A box with a code is not interchangeable with a disc for collectors or people who lend or resell games. Push Square reports that a redeemed code cannot be traded or resold. Buyers considering a boxed edition should check the specific product listing to see whether it includes a disc or only a code.

What has Sony reportedly said about future PlayStation discs?

Video Games Chronicle reports that Sony plans to stop producing PlayStation game discs for games launching after January 2028. Push Square separately reports that Sony said it would proceed cautiously. These are reported plans, not confirmation that disc production has already ended; the primary Sony announcement was not available in the cited reporting.

Zelnick’s comments are not a Sony policy statement. The reported timeline and his argument about convenience are separate matters: one concerns a planned Sony production change, while the other is a Take-Two executive’s view of when discs may be less useful.

What players gain or give up with each format

The practical difference depends on the edition and how you use games. A download may avoid handling or swapping discs, while a physical disc can matter for lending, resale, or building a tangible collection. A retail box alone does not settle the question: it may contain a disc or a code, and the cited reporting says a redeemed code cannot be resold.

  • Access and swapping: Digital delivery avoids changing discs; players already connected to the internet may find downloads more convenient, as Zelnick argues.
  • Internet dependence: His argument assumes an online registration or play requirement. The reports do not establish that every game or mode has the same requirement.
  • Lending and resale: A disc can be lent or resold; a redeemed download code cannot, according to Push Square’s report.
  • Collecting: Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida has described himself as a digital consumer while acknowledging that collectors may value physical games, as reported by Video Games Chronicle.

Why some former PlayStation leaders see a downside

Former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden has questioned the financial rationale for stopping disc production, while noting that he does not know Sony’s internal figures. He has also warned that eliminating discs could make the distinction between owning a game and having access to a digital asset more visible, with reputational consequences. Video Games Chronicle reports his view in the phrase, “If you can’t sell a thing, that means you don’t own a thing.” That is Layden’s opinion about ownership and consumer perception, not a statement of Sony’s policy.
