It makes most sense for organizations with a verified unit and a specific need for its hardware, not buyers seeking a straightforward current-generation platform.
What the RS18017xs+ offers
Synology introduced the RS18017xs+ in 2017 as a high-end rackmount storage system. Its core appeal is the combination of twelve SAS/SATA drive bays, two built-in 10GBase-T ports, ECC memory and an expansion path using compatible Synology SAS shelves.

How fast is the RS18017xs+ over 10GbE?
Published results depend on the test configuration, so Synology’s advertised figures should not be treated as a guaranteed speed for an individual deployment.
Synology’s manufacturer figures
In its 2019 datasheet, Synology advertised more than 4,800 MB/s sequential read throughput and 568,000 sequential read IOPS using a configuration with six 10GbE ports and link aggregation. Synology cautioned that results vary with environment, usage and configuration. These are vendor figures, not independent measurements.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
IT Pro’s 2017 hands-on tests
Dave Mitchell’s IT Pro review, published 11 August 2017, used Iometer with a Lenovo System x3550 M5 running Windows Server 2012 R2 and a Broadcom 10GBase-T card. With one mapped share and 256 KB requests, the review measured 9.2 Gbit/s read and 9 Gbit/s write. With two servers connected through separate 10GbE ports, it reported cumulative read/write throughput of 18.4/14 Gbit/s. These are historical results from that specific test setup, not a current retest or a prediction for a different drive layout, network or workload. The reviewer praised performance and application support, while noting that in-browser live view worked only with Internet Explorer.
How much can it expand?
Synology documents compatibility with two SAS expansion models. The expansion units are separate products; the documented maximums apply to the specified configurations.

Synology’s datasheet also lists optional 16 GB and 32 GB DDR4-2133 ECC RDIMM modules (RAMRG2133DDR4-16G and RAMRG2133DDR4-32G), the RKS1317 sliding rail kit, and E10G17-F2 and E10G15-F1 10Gbps network adapters. Confirm the exact compatibility of any component against the relevant documentation and the condition of the specific item before buying.
What DSM and support status should buyers expect?
Synology’s product-status listing, accessed 4 October 2026, classifies the RS18017xs+ as Discontinued, with DSM Update Full and Technical Support Limited. The listing also shows a five-year warranty field, but that does not establish active warranty coverage for a used unit. Warranty language in the older datasheet was tied to purchase date.

The Download Center result available for this review showed DSM 7.4.1 in the DSM 7.4 series. Check Synology’s current release information and security advisories before deployment; also confirm support eligibility, drive compatibility and any warranty that applies to the particular unit. A product-status label is not a substitute for checking whether the system and its installed components meet your operational requirements.
Storage, data protection and virtualization
The hardware guide lists Btrfs and ext4 for internal volumes and Basic, JBOD, RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 6 and RAID 10 storage modes. It specifies that external-media exFAT support requires a separate purchase of exFAT Access.

Synology’s 2019 datasheet describes Btrfs snapshots, Snapshot Replication and Hyper Backup, as well as virtualization support for VMware, Citrix, Microsoft Hyper-V and OpenStack. Those are capabilities documented in that datasheet revision; they do not establish that every associated package remains available or that the system holds current platform certification.

The strongest fit is an organization that needs this particular combination of twelve SAS/SATA bays, dual 10GbE, ECC memory and a documented route to compatible SAS shelves—and can verify the condition and support path of the hardware it can obtain. A discontinued model with limited technical support calls for more diligence than a current platform purchase.

- Performance: Evaluate throughput using your own drive layout, RAID choice, network and workload; do not equate a vendor benchmark with a differently configured lab result.
- Total cost: Account for the enclosure, shelves, drives and the condition or support risks of older hardware. The cited material does not establish current market prices.
- Operations: Validate rack space, power, cooling and noise requirements for your site; the cited evidence does not provide an independent current operating-cost comparison.
What to verify before buying a used or residual-stock unit
- Ask for the exact model and serial details, and check support eligibility with Synology before relying on assistance or warranty coverage.
- Confirm the chassis, drive bays, network ports and PCIe slots are working, and establish what rails and accessories are included.
- Check drive compatibility and the state of the installed disks; confirm that the intended RAID or storage configuration suits the workload.
- Verify the exact expansion-shelf model and compatibility, and price the shelf and its drives as part of the complete system rather than assuming expansion hardware is included.
- Review the DSM release, package requirements and security advisories relevant to your deployment before placing the system into service.
Synology’s launch announcement of 19 January 2017 framed the RS18017xs+ as a premium storage option for business IT operations. That was the manufacturer’s launch positioning; the practical decision today depends on the documented hardware fit and the particular unit’s lifecycle, condition and support situation.
