Before installing a community package on a Synology NAS, confirm the repository URL with its developer, check that the package supports your DSM version and NAS model, and understand the warning or trust controls your DSM version presents. A package listed in Package Center is not thereby verified by Synology.
Before adding a community source
- Confirm your DSM version and NAS model. Package availability can depend on both. Check the package developer’s compatibility information and documentation that matches your DSM version. Synology’s package installation guidance describes version and model considerations.
- Verify the source URL with the publisher. Get the repository address from the developer’s own site or documentation, not an unverified post or copied list. Adding a source makes its packages available in Package Center; it does not mean Synology reviewed or endorsed them.
- Check stable versus beta status and update support. Read the package’s own notes before installing, and determine whether it supports automatic updates.
Add a repository in DSM 7
- Open Package Center > Settings > Package Sources.
- Select Add, then enter a name for the source and the repository URL obtained from its developer.
- After saving, look for available packages in the Community section. The first load may take time. Synology’s DSM 7 package installation instructions describe this process.
Before selecting a package, check its publisher, DSM and model compatibility, release status, and update options. The source appearing in Package Center is not a Synology verification.
Trust settings and warnings depend on DSM version
DSM 6 trust-level choices
Synology’s DSM 6 Package Center configuration help lists three trust levels: Synology Inc., Synology Inc. and trusted publishers, and Any publisher. In that documentation, trusted publishers are publishers trusted through a community package source or by importing the publisher’s certificate.
Synology defines the broadest option this way: “Any publisher: Allow installation of any package regardless of publisher and integrity.” That setting removes the publisher and integrity restriction; do not treat it as a routine way to install community software.

DSM 7 and SynoCommunity packages
SynoCommunity’s installation guidance says DSM 6.x may require setting trust to Synology Inc. and trusted publishers. For DSM 7.x, it says users cannot trust publishers other than Synology and will see a warning: “The package is provided by third-party developers and not verified by Synology”. This is SynoCommunity’s description of DSM 7 behavior. Read the warning as a meaningful statement about verification; do not assume adding a repository removes it.
Certificates, notifications, and package updates
Synology’s DSM 6 configuration instructions document importing a trusted publisher certificate. They also say Synology’s certificate is automatically updated during installation when the NAS is connected to the internet. Use certificate steps only when they apply to your DSM version and the publisher you intend to trust.

Package Center can offer email or desktop notifications about package updates. Email notices require DSM notification settings to be configured. DSM 7’s Package Center settings help documents automatic-update options; a grayed-out package checkbox indicates that package does not support automatic updating. Check the package’s own update process if automatic updates are unavailable.

Beta packages
Beta status is a separate consideration from publisher trust. Synology advises that beta packages are not recommended for commercial use. SynoCommunity says its beta packages are supported only on DSM 6.x and are not recognized by DSM 7.x. Confirm the current status and compatibility with the developer before relying on a beta package.

Manual installation of an SPK
Manual installation is an alternative route, not a way to establish that a package is trustworthy. Synology documents uploading a local .spk through Package Center’s Manual Install option, including for a specific package version or when the NAS has no internet access. Its Download Center provides official packages by NAS model. For a third-party SPK, verify its publisher and compatibility before uploading; the manual route does not replace those checks.
