The Synology DiskStation DS1515+ is a capable-on-paper five-bay NAS, but in 2026 its age and support status matter as much as its hardware. Synology lists it as discontinued, with DSM updates at end of life and technical support limited. That makes it most relevant to existing owners and carefully vetted used-unit buyers—not as a default choice for a new NAS purchase.
This review separates Synology’s published specifications and performance claims from independent testing: no independent DS1515+ benchmark results are established here.
What the DS1515+ offers
Introduced in 2014, the DS1515+ is a five-bay desktop NAS built around an Intel Atom C2538 quad-core processor running at 2.4 GHz. Synology specifies 2 GB of DDR3 memory, expandable to 6 GB. Its official DS1515+ datasheet describes five internal 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch SATA II drive positions and a maximum internal capacity example of 30 TB using five 6 TB disks. Synology cautions that usable capacity varies by volume type; the 30 TB figure is a dated manufacturer example, not a current drive-capacity limit.
Recommended Free Tools
For storage layouts, Synology lists SHR, Basic, JBOD, RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 6 and RAID 10. The datasheet also identifies hot-swappable drives and AES-NI hardware encryption. RAID can help maintain availability after certain drive failures, but it is not a substitute for an independent backup.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Ports and expansion
- Four Gigabit Ethernet ports
- Four USB 3.0 ports and two eSATA ports
- Wake on LAN/WAN support and support for wireless dongles, which are not included
- Synology lists DX513 and DX213 expansion-unit support; its datasheet says the DS1515+ can scale to 15 drives with the DX513
Expansion compatibility and accessory availability should be verified for the specific unit and current market before purchase. The enclosure measures 157 × 248 × 233 mm, weighs 4.17 kg, and has a manufacturer-listed operating temperature range of 5–35°C.
How to interpret the performance claims
Synology’s 2014-era DS1515+ datasheet claims 450.77 MB/s read and 396.50 MB/s write, and 442.82 MB/s encrypted read and 187.88 MB/s encrypted write. Those are manufacturer-published figures, not independent measurements. The cited documentation does not provide an independent test method, workload configuration, or comparable current-model benchmark, so these numbers should not be treated as guaranteed real-world throughput.

In practice, transfers depend on the network path, client, drives, RAID or volume configuration, and workload. Four Gigabit Ethernet ports do not make a single ordinary client connection a 4-Gigabit link; any benefit from multiple links depends on supported network configuration and traffic. The available figures alone cannot establish how quickly this NAS will handle a particular backup, media, or multi-user workload.
Atom C2000 reliability: a real risk, not a diagnosis
The DS1515+ uses Intel’s Atom C2538, which belongs to the Atom C2000 family. Intel’s Atom C2000 Product Family Specification Update (June 2018) documents erratum AVR54: the SoC’s LPC clock outputs may stop functioning, and Intel says that if the LPC clock or clocks stop, the system will no longer be able to boot. Intel identifies a platform-level workaround.

This processor-family erratum is relevant when evaluating a C2538-based NAS, but the documentation does not establish how many DS1515+ units are affected, the probability of failure, whether a particular unit received an applicable mitigation, or the condition of an individual used device. Synology’s 2017 statement acknowledged the erratum, characterized accelerated degradation after prolonged use as rare, and said it had not observed an abnormal failure rate among its C2538 products. Synology also announced a one-year warranty extension for listed models at that time; that historical announcement does not establish current warranty coverage.
If considering a used unit, ask for service and repair history, confirm that it boots and operates reliably, and treat seller assurances about a fix or serial-number status as claims to verify rather than guarantees. The available documentation cannot diagnose a particular NAS remotely.

Support and security status in 2026
Synology’s Product Support Status listing marks the DS1515+ as discontinued, DSM updates as end of life, and technical support as limited. Synology says limited support may consist of basic consultation; repair or replacement can depend on available materials and components and may incur a fee.

End of life for DSM updates does not mean a specific unit instantly stops working. It does mean Synology’s status listing says future DSM updates have ended, a material consideration if the NAS will hold sensitive files or be exposed to a network. Check the current security and update position against your needs, and keep a tested backup independent of the NAS. The cited status information does not establish a current DSM version or the date of any last security patch.

Is a used DS1515+ worth considering?
For an existing owner whose device is stable and whose update requirements are understood, the DS1515+ may continue to serve a defined storage role. For a buyer, its five bays, four Gigabit Ethernet ports, multiple USB/eSATA connections, and documented expansion options may be attractive only if the price and condition justify taking on an end-of-life platform and the C2000-family uncertainty.
Before committing, assess the decision on concrete factors:
- Security lifecycle: Decide whether a NAS without future DSM updates fits the data and network exposure involved.
- Unit condition: Request a demonstration and available service or mitigation history; no population-level failure rate or universal fix is established by the cited documentation.
- Compatibility: Check that the drives and any expansion hardware you intend to use are compatible with this model and available to you.
- Workload and network: Match the actual client/network setup and workload to the capacity and connectivity, rather than relying on the vendor’s peak throughput claims.
- Total cost: Include the used NAS, drives, any needed expansion hardware, and the cost of an independent backup. Current prices and availability are not established here.
A newer alternative cannot be declared the winner from the specifications available here; compare candidate models on update lifecycle, support, verified condition, bays and expansion, drive compatibility, workload-relevant connectivity, and total cost.

In Synology’s November 18, 2014 launch announcement, Technical Marketing Manager Franklin Hua said: “The Atom C2000 processor provides Synology NAS with an impressive level of encryption performance for file transfers, while the low energy consumption design keeps operating costs low – both of which are prime concerns for small businesses.” This is a dated manufacturer statement, not an independent endorsement or a current measurement of operating costs.
