SymbiFlow is now F4PGA. If you are looking for the open-source FPGA toolchain, use F4PGA’s current documentation and examples: they describe a collection of synthesis, implementation, architecture-data, and bitstream tools rather than one standalone compiler.
What is SymbiFlow, and what is F4PGA?
SymbiFlow is the former name associated with the project now presented as F4PGA; the F4PGA examples site states, “SymbiFlow is now F4PGA.” The project’s purpose is to provide an open-source route from an FPGA design to a device bitstream by connecting hardware synthesis and implementation tools with device-specific architecture information.
That distinction matters in practice: the flow is an ecosystem of cooperating tools and architecture-definition projects, not a single monolithic compiler. Its target support and setup depend on the FPGA family and the particular flow you want to use.
How does the F4PGA FPGA flow work?
- Architecture data describes the chip. Family-specific projects provide information about FPGA resources, timing, and technology mapping.
- Yosys synthesizes the design. It converts the hardware description into structures supported by the selected device.
- Placement and routing assign and connect resources. Depending on the flow, nextpnr or Verilog to Routing places design blocks on the chip and routes connections between them.
- FASM features are converted into a bitstream. F4PGA represents selected device features in FASM, then uses information from bitstream-documentation projects to translate those features into a configuration bitstream.
The architecture information is family-specific. F4PGA documentation names Project X-Ray for Xilinx 7-Series, Project IceStorm for Lattice iCE40, and Project Trellis for Lattice ECP5.

Which FPGA families and boards are covered?
The F4PGA examples page names Xilinx 7-Series, Lattice iCE40, Lattice ECP5, and QuickLogic EOS S3 among its target families. Its guide says current examples focus on Artix-7 and EOS S3 and links to workflows for boards including Arty, Basys 3, and Zybo-Z7.
A family appearing in a list does not establish that every device, board, or feature in that family is equally supported or mature. Before choosing hardware, check the flow and board instructions for the exact target. The project and companion tools are distributed across repositories with differing update histories, so assess the relevant repository and release records rather than treating F4PGA as one uniformly maintained package.

How do you install F4PGA and build a first design?
The official getting-started documentation offers entry points for newcomers, intermediate users, and architecture developers. For a first project, it directs newcomers to the F4PGA examples, which walk through installation and producing a bitstream from an example design.
F4PGA recommends Conda or another prepackaged environment because the flow combines multiple changing tools, assets, and scripts. With Conda, setup has two distinct parts: prepare the software environment and obtain the architecture-definition packages. Those architecture assets are too large to distribute through Conda. The documented setup uses environment variables such as F4PGA_INSTALL_DIR and F4PGA_FAM, retrieves architecture-definition tarballs, and bootstraps an environment from the examples or architecture-definition repository.

Generating a bitstream and loading it onto a board are separate steps. Programming procedures vary by board and may require a compatible cable or adapter as well as a programming utility. F4PGA documentation lists OpenOCD, tinyfpgab, tinyprog, and OpenFPGALoader as examples. OpenFPGALoader supports boards for architectures including xc7, ECP5, and iCE40, with interfaces such as JTAG, DAP, ORBTrace, DFU, or FTDI. Check the exact board and adapter requirements before selecting a programmer.

What should you check before choosing F4PGA?
- Confirm that the exact FPGA device and board have a documented flow; a family-level mention is not a guarantee of support for every model or feature.
- Review the flow’s maturity and current instructions in the relevant project documentation and release records.
- Account for both the packaged software environment and any separately obtained architecture assets.
- Verify that your programming utility, board interface, and cable or adapter work together; bitstream generation alone does not load the design onto hardware.
