A data-bearing Nintendo Switch 2 game card holds up to 64GB, twice the 32GB maximum commonly sold for original Switch games. That is enough for many Switch 2 titles—and for all of Cyberpunk 2077—but not every game fits. Some boxed games instead use a Game-Key Card: it unlocks a download rather than storing the full game. So a physical Switch 2 purchase may still need an internet connection and substantial console storage.
The practical distinction is not just cartridge size. It is where the game data lives, how much space you must provide, and whether the card preserves a playable copy if the download is no longer available.
What does a 64GB Switch 2 game card change?
It raises the amount of game data that can be stored on a physical, data-bearing card. Nintendo still calls the medium a game card; it is a small flash-storage cartridge, not an optical disc. CD Projekt confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077 uses the full 64GB capacity and described it as the highest-capacity card available to developers in 2025.
For comparison, original Switch retail cards were sold in capacities up to 32GB. Some reporting has muddled that retail ceiling with a claimed developer-facing 64GB option for the older system. The useful comparison for buyers is that 32GB was the largest commonly available original Switch game card, while Switch 2 data cards now reach 64GB. Nintendo has not published a full table of Switch 2 card capacities, so smaller proposed card sizes should not be treated as confirmed specifications.

The extra capacity matters in two directions. It lets a publisher put a larger game entirely on a card, but it does not guarantee every game will ship that way. A game larger than 64GB cannot fit as a complete image on one of these cards, and a publisher may choose a download-based format even when the game would fit.
How do a game card, Game-Key Card, and digital game differ?
They can all lead to a playable game on Switch 2, but the data is stored differently. The label on the box tells you whether the cartridge itself contains the game or merely unlocks its download.
| Format | Where the full game data lives | Internet and console storage | What must be present to play |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular game card | On the cartridge | A full download is not required; patches or add-on content may still need storage | The game card |
| Game-Key Card | Downloaded to system memory or a microSD Express card | Internet is needed for the initial download; sufficient free space is required | The Game-Key Card, even after downloading |
| Digital purchase | Downloaded to system memory or a microSD Express card | Download and free storage are required | No physical cartridge; digital access follows account and sharing rules |
| Switch 2 Edition game card | For titles identified as such, both the original game and Switch 2 upgrade are on the cartridge, according to Nintendo’s clarification reported by IGN | Updates or additional content may still need storage | The game card |
A Game-Key Card is therefore not a download code that disappears after one account redeems it. Ars Technica reported that the card can be used on another Switch 2: that console downloads the data, then the card continues to act as the key for play. That makes lending or resale possible, though a new console needs its own download.

Many Nintendo-published launch titles are comfortably below the limit. Some large third-party installs exceed it, while other games under 64GB have still been released as Game-Key Cards. The figures below come from dated store listings or published storage measurements, which can differ as versions and updates change.
| Game or software | Reported size | Source and context |
|---|---|---|
| Mario Kart World | 23.4GB | Japanese My Nintendo Store listing reported by IGN and Eurogamer, 2025; WIRED later reported a 24GB digital size |
| Donkey Kong Bananza | 10GB; later 8.7GB | Japanese My Nintendo Store listing reported by IGN and Eurogamer, 2025; WIRED’s later digital measurement, 2025 |
| Super Mario Party Jamboree Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV | 7.7GB | Japanese My Nintendo Store listing reported by IGN and Eurogamer, 2025 |
| Kirby and the Forgotten Land Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star-Crossed World | 5.7GB | Japanese My Nintendo Store listing reported by IGN and Eurogamer, 2025 |
| Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition | 64GB | CD Projekt and IGN, 2025; the full-capacity game-card example |
| Split Fiction | 69.2GB | WIRED, 2025; exceeds the confirmed 64GB card ceiling |
| Hitman: World of Assassination | 61GB | WIRED, 2025; below the ceiling but released as a Game-Key Card |
| Street Fighter 6 | 48.2GB | WIRED, 2025; below the ceiling but released as a Game-Key Card |
| Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut | 45.3GB | WIRED, 2025; below the ceiling but released as a Game-Key Card |
| The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Switch 2 upgrade pack | 9.7GB | WIRED, 2025; an upgrade download, even when the original Switch game card is owned |
The differences between published sizes are not necessarily contradictions. A store listing and a later installed digital copy can reflect different versions, data packaging, or updates. For example, the Japanese store listed Donkey Kong Bananza at 10GB in 2025, while WIRED later measured a digital version at 8.7GB. Use the figure for the specific edition and date rather than assuming every listing describes a permanent size.

The examples also show why the 64GB figure alone cannot tell you what you will need. Cyberpunk 2077 demonstrates that the entire 64GB game can be on a cartridge. Split Fiction demonstrates that a game can exceed that limit. Meanwhile, sub-64GB titles such as Hitman may still use a key card.
Why would a game under 64GB use a Game-Key Card?
Because fitting on a cartridge is only one part of the publisher’s decision. Game cards cost more to manufacture than optical discs, and Daniel Ahmad of Niko Partners said the cost rises with each gigabyte. Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser described Game-Key Cards as a way for publishing partners to sell large games at retail without needing a cartridge large enough to hold the game data.
PCMag reported in September 2026 that third parties were offered a 64GB card or a Game-Key Card at launch, rather than a less expensive small-capacity data card. If that remains the choice, a 5GB game may not be put on a correspondingly small, cheaper ROM card; the publisher can instead place a download key in the box. That helps explain why some games that would fit under the limit still use the key-card format.
Performance can matter too. Ubisoft’s Rob Bantin said the streaming demands of Star Wars Outlaws did not meet the publisher’s quality target on Switch 2 cards, leading it to choose a Game-Key Card. This is a title-specific explanation, not evidence that every data-bearing cartridge is too slow for every game.
The format is common among third-party releases, but there is no reliable official percentage for the live catalog. IGN described almost all physical third-party games revealed by May 2025 as Game-Key Cards; WIRED described the pattern similarly in August 2025. Those are snapshots of releases at particular dates, not a complete count of all Switch 2 games.

How can you tell whether a boxed game includes the full game?
Check the packaging before buying, especially if your priority is a self-contained physical copy. Do not assume that a red cartridge or a retail box means the game data is on the card.
- Look for the format label. A Game-Key Card box carries a key icon and the words “GAME-KEY CARD,” typically near the rating. The cartridge label itself also has a small key icon, which can help identify a loose or used copy.
- Read the download notice. Game-Key Card packaging indicates that a full game download via the internet is required and states the required storage amount. Check the Nintendo Store or eShop listing for the digital version’s download size as well.
- Confirm available space and connection. A key card needs enough room in system memory or on a compatible microSD Express card for the download, and internet access for that first download and launch.
- Keep the card after installation. Downloading the game does not convert the key card into a digital purchase. It must remain inserted whenever you play.
Nintendo says a Nintendo Account is not required to download Game-Key Card data. That is different from saying the card contains the game: the game still downloads to the console’s storage.
Do physical Switch 2 games still take up console storage?
A full data-bearing cartridge generally avoids storing the entire base game on the console, but a Game-Key Card does not. Updates, downloadable content, and upgrade packs can also consume system or expansion storage even when you own a physical game.
Switch 2 has 256GB of internal storage, eight times the original Switch’s 32GB, according to Nintendo figures reported by IGN and Eurogamer in 2025. The amount available for games is lower once system software and other files are accounted for: WIRED reported that the system software occupied a little over 6GB, leaving about 249GB at the time of its 2025 report. That is a useful starting point, not a promise that exactly 249GB will always be free.
A 64GB install would use about a quarter of the console’s internal capacity, as IGN noted for Cyberpunk 2077. A collection of Game-Key Card downloads can therefore fill internal storage even though each game came in a physical box. If you buy mostly data-bearing cartridges, storage use may be concentrated in updates and add-ons; if you buy key cards or digital games, you need to budget for the full installs.

What expansion storage works?
Nintendo Switch 2 accepts microSD Express cards, with official support up to 2TB. Nintendo explicitly warns that the console is only compatible with microSD Express for Switch 2 game storage. A regular microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC card from an original Switch cannot store Switch 2 game data; it can be used to import screenshots and videos.
Nintendo recommends using one Express card because software split across multiple cards cannot later be merged. As a rough, non-Nintendo estimate, Deku Deals calculated that cards of 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB could hold about 5, 10, 19, and 39 popular games, respectively. Actual counts depend on each game’s install size, updates, and other stored content, so those estimates are not a capacity guarantee.
Game saves are separate from game installs: Nintendo says save data is stored in system memory and cannot be copied or saved to a microSD Express card. Expansion storage can make room for games, but it is not a place to move saves.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Are game cards slower, and what happens if a download server disappears?
Data-bearing cards can be played without first installing the full game, but published comparisons found slower load times from a card than from internal storage or microSD Express in the titles measured. In a Mario Kart World Home Menu boot comparison reported by Notebookcheck in 2025, YouTuber 4416Y recorded 16.60 seconds from internal UFS storage, 19.18–19.78 seconds from microSD Express, and 23.91 seconds from the game card. Deku Deals separately reported that game-card loads were about one second slower than Express storage and more than three seconds slower than internal storage across three tested titles. These are specific tests, not a universal difference for every game or loading screen.
For preservation, the more consequential distinction is whether the full game data is on the physical card. A data-bearing card preserves its stored game image on the cartridge. A Game-Key Card with no downloaded data depends on the game being downloadable; if the relevant servers are no longer available, a new owner without the files may not be able to obtain the game. Stephen Kick, CEO of Nightdive Studios, criticized the format’s preservation implications in comments reported by IGN. If keeping a playable copy independent of future downloads is your priority, verify that the box is a regular game card rather than a key card.

Game-Key Cards retain some practical advantages of physical software: the card is required to play, and it can be lent or resold rather than being locked to the purchaser’s Nintendo Account. The trade-off is that another console needs to download the game data again. A card is therefore still a physical token of ownership, but it does not always function as a physical archive of the game.
Will a Switch 2 game card work in the original Switch?
No: a Switch 2-exclusive game card does not run on the original Switch. The cartridge format’s physical resemblance does not make the software backward-compatible. A Switch 2 Edition card includes the Switch 2 game and upgrade for the titles Nintendo has identified in that category; it is not a way to run Switch 2 software on older hardware.
Original Switch cards and Switch 2 cards should not be confused with the separate issue of backward compatibility for original Switch software on Switch 2. Check the specific game’s compatibility and edition details rather than assuming that a cartridge fits means its software can run on either console.

Can I move a Game-Key Card download to a different Switch 2?
The card can be used on another Switch 2, but the new console must download the game data there. The card is a key rather than a one-time redemption code tied to the first console.
Do Game-Key Cards need a Nintendo Account for the initial download?
Nintendo says an account is not required to download the game data. You still need internet access and enough free storage for the download.
Can I combine free space across two microSD Express cards?
No. Nintendo recommends using one Express card, and software stored across multiple cards cannot later be merged into one card.
Can an original Switch microSD card store my Switch 2 saves?
No. Switch 2 game saves are kept in system memory, and Nintendo says they cannot be copied or saved to a microSD Express card. Older microSD cards can import screenshots and videos, but not hold Switch 2 game data.
