Swift.org announced on April 8, 2026, that the official Swift extension for Visual Studio Code is available in the Open VSX Registry. That lets compatible editors that use Open VSX—including VSCodium, Cursor, AWS Kiro, and Google Antigravity—install it through their usual extension workflow, without relying on Microsoft’s extension marketplace. The extension is still the official swiftlang/vscode-swift project.
What the Open VSX listing changes
Open VSX is a vendor-neutral, open-source extension registry hosted by the Eclipse Foundation. Swift.org’s announcement expands where the official extension can be obtained; it does not describe a separate Swift editor or a different extension. Editors named in the announcement—VSCodium, Cursor, AWS Kiro, and Google Antigravity—can access the listing through their Open VSX-based extension workflow. Availability and update behavior still depend on each editor’s configuration.
Swift.org announced the listing on April 8, 2026. A maintainer had also reported on February 5, 2026, that extension versions 2.16.0 and 2.16.1, along with the lldb-dap dependency, were published on Open VSX for VSCodium, Cursor, Kiro, and similar editors; see the Swift Forums release notice.
How to install it in VSCodium or Cursor
- Open the editor’s Extensions view.
- Search for the official Swift extension. Confirm the publisher and project are
swiftlangandvscode-swift, rather than relying on the name alone. - Select Install. The editor should obtain it from the registry configured for that editor; if the result does not appear, check whether the editor is using Open VSX and whether its extension search or registry settings have been customized.
- Open a Swift package containing
Package.swift. Install and select a compatible Swift toolchain if the editor prompts you or language services do not start.
Exact menus and registry settings vary by editor and version, so there is no single UI path that applies to every VS Code-compatible editor. The Open VSX announcement establishes availability for the named editors, not identical setup screens or update policies across them.

- Making your mice glide on its surface effortlessly, which can provide optimum speed and accurate control during your working or gaming. While sturdy, it’s flexible enough to be rolled up for easy transport, to move around so you can work or game wherever you want.
- Material feels soft in the hand , which can help to muffling noise when you type on the pads heavily
- Mouse Mat rubber base keeps the entire surface in place preventing the cloth from bunching up to maintain smooth mouse movement across the entire desktop. Easy cleaning and maintenance.
- If you have any issues with our gaming mouse pad, please let us know. Our service team are always here and ready to help you at any time.
What Swift development features are included
The extension uses SourceKit-LSP for language intelligence. The documented capabilities include completion, go-to-definition, find-all-references, rename refactoring, diagnostics, quick fixes, and code actions. The extension repository also lists peek navigation, symbol search, tasks, a project panel for package dependencies and actions, and a Test Explorer. It exposes an API that other VS Code extensions can use to inspect Swift toolchains, projects, and Swift Package Manager packages. See the extension repository and Swift’s SourceKit-LSP documentation.
Project support: Swift Package Manager first
The strongest documented path is a Swift Package Manager project with a Package.swift manifest. Most extension features are designed around that workflow. Xcode project support is limited, so an editor using the extension should not be treated as a full replacement for Xcode when a project depends on Xcode-specific project management or capabilities.

Why autocomplete or indexing may need a build
SourceKit-LSP needs project information to provide useful language features. With toolchains earlier than Swift 6.1, users generally need to run swift build once so the package is built and the information needed for indexing is available. This is an initial project setup step, not a command required before every completion request.
Swift 6.1 adds background indexing and caches indexing data in .build/index-build. The exact experience depends on the selected toolchain and project. If language features are incomplete, check that the editor has selected the intended Swift toolchain and that the package can build; SourceKit-LSP feature details are documented in the Swift documentation.

Operating systems and debugging
Swift’s earlier extension documentation describes support for macOS, Linux, and Windows. The extension’s debugging integration uses LLDB’s Debug Adapter Protocol (DAP): it can generate launch configurations, and debugging relies on the LLDB DAP extension. Installing the Swift extension alone does not guarantee a working debugger; the required LLDB DAP integration and a suitable toolchain must also be available in the editor. See Swift’s VS Code extension documentation and the extension repository.
What to check when choosing an editor
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Does the editor use Open VSX? | The official listing is available through Open VSX; registry configuration can affect search and installation. |
| How does the editor install and update extensions? | Installation and update behavior are editor-specific, even when the extension comes from the same registry. |
| Is the editor available on your operating system? | Swift’s extension documentation describes macOS, Linux, and Windows support, but the editor itself must also support your system. |
| Is your project a Swift package or an Xcode project? | Swift Package Manager projects are the main supported path; Xcode project support is limited. |
| Can you use SourceKit-LSP and LLDB DAP? | SourceKit-LSP supplies language features, while debugging depends on the LLDB DAP integration. |
| Which Swift toolchain will the editor use? | Indexing behavior differs: toolchains before Swift 6.1 generally need an initial build, while Swift 6.1 provides background indexing. |
What the announcement does not establish
The announcement confirms broader distribution, not an adoption count, market-share change, or performance comparison among editors. Nor does Open VSX availability mean every editor has identical Swift support: project handling, registry configuration, toolchain selection, and debugger setup remain relevant.
