They may be saved on the SIM, on the phone itself, or in an online account. Before removing the old SIM or erasing the old phone, identify where your contacts are stored, copy or sync them to a destination the new phone can access, and check that they arrived.
What happens to your contacts when you swap SIM cards?
A SIM swap changes which mobile network connection your phone uses; it does not automatically transfer every contact. Contacts may be stored on the SIM, in the phone’s local storage, or in an account such as Google, iCloud, or an email account. The phone or account that holds them determines how to move them.
Google notes that device-only contacts may be lost if the original device is lost or damaged. Apple says iPhone does not store contacts on the SIM. A SIM import can only bring over contacts that were actually saved to a compatible SIM, and the details transferred to an iPhone depend on how the previous phone stored them.
Choose the transfer method that matches where contacts are stored

Before removing the old SIM or wiping the old phone
- Check the contact source. Open the contacts app and inspect which account or storage location contains your entries. Do not assume the SIM holds the full list.
- Make a copy you can access on the new phone. On supported Android devices, back up and sync eligible device and SIM contacts to the intended Google Account, or import SIM contacts into that account. The available controls vary by make and model. Google also supports importing a VCF file.
- For iPhone-to-iPhone contacts, use an account. Make sure contacts are synced with iCloud or another mail account you can use on the new phone. An iPhone does not write its contacts to the SIM.
- Keep any exported file accessible. If you use a VCF file, save it somewhere the new phone can open and confirm you can select it for import.
Import or sync contacts after the SIM change
Android: sync the Google Account or import the SIM
On the new phone, sign in to the same Google Account that holds your contacts and allow contacts to sync. If the contacts are on the SIM instead, Google’s Contacts app instructions are Contacts → Organize → Manage SIM; choose the contacts and Google Account, then select Import. iPhone: import contacts from a compatible SIM
If the contacts are on an old SIM that fits the iPhone, insert it and go to Settings → Apps → Contacts → Import SIM Contacts. Then open Contacts and inspect the imported entries. Apple says the iPhone does not store contacts on a SIM; this process imports contacts from a SIM that contains them. Apple’s instructions for importing SIM contacts
Samsung Galaxy: check the Contacts app’s import controls
Samsung documents SIM contact import and export through Galaxy Contacts. Check the app’s Import/Export controls for the options available on your model, since labels and availability can vary. Samsung’s Galaxy contact instructions

Verify the transfer before giving up the old device or SIM
- Open Contacts on the new phone and check that names and numbers appear in the intended account or phone storage.
- Check more than one entry, especially any contact whose details matter to you.
- If contacts are missing, return to the old phone or SIM while you still have access. Recheck the selected account, sync status, and whether the contacts were stored on the SIM, locally, or in another account.
- Do not erase, trade in, or discard the old phone or SIM until the copy is confirmed.
Google contacts remain in the Google Account when you sign out of a device, so signing in to that same account on another device is the account-based route. For SIM and VCF imports, confirm the resulting contacts in the destination before removing your fallback access.
