Choose a Surface Laptop if you mainly want a traditional laptop for typing; choose a Surface Pro if you will regularly use it as a tablet, detach its keyboard, or write and draw with a pen. The Pro’s keyboard and Slim Pen are sold separately, so compare the cost of the setup you will actually use—not just the tablet price.
Surface Laptop vs. Surface Pro: the main difference
The Surface Laptop is a clamshell computer with a built-in keyboard and precision touchpad. The Surface Pro is a tablet with a kickstand and support for a detachable keyboard. Microsoft also presents pen input as an option for taking notes, sketching, and inking. Those designs lead to the clearest buying rule: prioritize convenient, ready-to-type use and choose Laptop; prioritize tablet flexibility or pen use and choose Pro. Microsoft’s comparison describes the distinction and notes that features and availability can vary by region.

Compare the actual screen, weight, and ports
Screen size alone does not tell the whole story. Resolution and refresh rate vary across models, as do port selections and the amount of weight you carry. Microsoft’s published US specifications are summarized below; display options may vary by configuration and market.

Specifications are from Microsoft’s Laptop and Pro pages. Pro weights are for the tablet; the detachable keyboard adds weight when you carry it as a laptop. Confirm the exact model’s ports if you rely on a monitor, dock, storage device, or another peripheral.

Keyboard, tablet mode, and accessory cost
Surface Laptop: typing is ready out of the box
The built-in keyboard and touchpad make the Laptop the simpler choice if most of your work involves typing and you do not need to switch to a tablet-style device. There is no detachable keyboard to add to the purchase.
Surface Pro: flexibility depends on the setup
The Pro’s tablet form and kickstand suit touch-first use, and a detachable keyboard lets you add a laptop-style typing setup when needed. Microsoft sells the Pro keyboard and Slim Pen separately. If you expect to type regularly, include the model-compatible keyboard in your total; add a Slim Pen only if handwriting or drawing matters to you. Check accessory compatibility for the exact Pro generation before buying.

Battery life: compare estimates cautiously
Microsoft’s current US product pages checked October 4, 2026 publish these maximum estimates. They are manufacturer claims, not independent test results or promises of typical mixed-use runtime.

Microsoft says battery life varies with configuration, usage, network and signal strength, settings, and other factors. The Laptop page describes its video and web figures as Microsoft testing, with May 2026 tests on preproduction 13.8-inch and 15-inch configurations, Wi-Fi connected, at 150-nit brightness with auto-brightness off and otherwise default settings. Microsoft’s earlier comparison article lists different battery estimates for some Laptop sizes, so the table uses the current product page’s figures rather than treating older comparison-page numbers as current. Performance and app compatibility
Microsoft lists Snapdragon X2 Plus and X2 Elite options across the current Laptop configurations, and Snapdragon X2 Plus or X2 Elite on the 13-inch Pro page. The 12-inch Pro page lists Snapdragon X2 Plus. Those family-level listings do not establish a universal performance winner. Compare the processor, memory, and storage in the exact configurations you can buy, and consider the requirements of your own workload.
If your work depends on a particular legacy or specialist app, enterprise tool, driver, or peripheral, verify that specific combination before purchase. The processor listings alone do not establish compatibility for every workload. Microsoft’s Store comparison page is an additional official reference, but it may show a different configuration or page snapshot from the current product page.

Which Surface should you buy?
Choose Surface Laptop if…
- You will type most of the time and want a built-in keyboard and touchpad.
- You prefer a conventional clamshell rather than carrying a tablet and detachable keyboard.
- You have a preferred screen size, refresh rate, port selection, or weight from the specific Laptop configurations available to you.
Choose Surface Pro if…
- You will regularly use tablet mode, the kickstand, touch input, or pen input.
- You value being able to detach the keyboard rather than keeping it attached at all times.
- You are willing to include a compatible keyboard in the cost if you need laptop-style typing, and to buy a Slim Pen only for a genuine pen-input use case.
Before choosing, match the exact configuration to your budget, required apps and accessories, preferred screen, and port needs. Microsoft’s comparison is written for the US market, and the company says features and availability can vary by region; local lineups and prices may differ.
