Microsoft confirmed the Surface Laptop Ultra in May 2026, including a 15-inch mini-LED touchscreen, NVIDIA Blackwell RTX graphics, CUDA support and up to 128 GB of unified memory. The more detailed 18-core and 20-core configuration split, estimated prices, preorder timing and shipping window reported ahead of Microsoft’s October 7 event were not confirmed in the cited pre-event reports as final retail details.
What Microsoft has officially confirmed
Microsoft announced the Surface Laptop Ultra on May 31, 2026, describing it as its first laptop to combine an NVIDIA Blackwell RTX GPU, full CUDA support and up to 128 GB of unified memory. Microsoft says the memory can be allocated dynamically between the CPU and GPU, and positions the laptop for AI creation, 3D rendering and multi-model workflows. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent performance results. Microsoft’s announcement called the device a prerelease product and said features could change or vary by country or region.
Display and ports
The announced display is a 15-inch mini-LED PixelSense Ultra touchscreen with a stated 262 pixels per inch and peak HDR brightness of up to 2,000 nits. Microsoft also cites high-precision color accuracy and lists Platinum and Nightfall finishes. The announced ports are HDMI, USB-C, USB-A, SD card and a headphone jack; Microsoft calls the haptic touchpad its largest yet. The announcement did not provide a final retail configuration table.
How to interpret the performance and battery claims
Microsoft’s “1 petaflop” AI-compute figure has a specific qualification: its footnote attributes the figure to NVIDIA and describes it as theoretical FP4 TOPS using the sparsity feature. It is not an independent benchmark of a shipping laptop. Microsoft’s all-day battery statement is based on internal testing of prerelease units; the company says battery life varies significantly with usage, settings and other factors. No independent benchmark or third-party battery test results are established by the cited material.

Reported configurations: 18-core and 20-core options
Two configurations were described in October 6 pre-event reporting. Notebookcheck attributed the details to Windows Central and Roland Quandt, while Windows Central’s event preview reported the same broad split. These are reported configurations, not a final Microsoft-confirmed retail list. Notebookcheck’s report and Windows Central’s preview describe them as follows:
| Reported option | Processor cores | Blackwell RTX cores | Reported memory tiers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lower configuration | 18 | 5,120 | 24 GB or 32 GB |
| Higher configuration | 20 | 6,144 | 32 GB, 48 GB, 64 GB or 128 GB |
The 20-core option is the one associated with the maximum reported 6,144 GPU cores and 128 GB memory. Microsoft’s May announcement independently supports the platform ceiling of up to 20 Arm CPU cores, up to 6,144 Blackwell RTX cores and up to 128 GB unified memory, but it did not confirm these exact SKU pairings. The Windows Experience Blog also describes Microsoft’s RTX Spark platform at those maximums; its platform-level figures should not be treated as confirmation that every retail region will offer every laptop configuration. Microsoft’s Windows Experience Blog names creative and developer applications including Blender, DaVinci Resolve, Cinema 4D, Adobe Photoshop and Premiere, and MATLAB. Compatibility and performance for a particular workflow still depend on the shipping device, application version and workload.

Price, preorder and delivery: what the reports said
The October 6 article described price and timing as expectations ahead of the October 7 event, not confirmed sale information. Windows Central expected entry pricing “well above $2,000,” but said exact pricing had not been confirmed by its sources. Roland Quandt reportedly gave a broad range from below about $3,000 to above about $7,000 for high-end configurations. Notebookcheck also reported that preorders were expected on October 7 and initial shipments in mid-October. Those estimates do not establish current prices, an open preorder, or a delivery date.
Microsoft’s May announcement only said the laptop would be available later in 2026. It also said actual sale and delivery depended on regulatory certification and approval, and that features could change or vary by region. The cited evidence does not establish final retail pricing, current preorder status, regional SKU availability or verified delivery timing. Check Microsoft’s current regional product or store listing for those details rather than relying on pre-event estimates.

What RTX Spark means for Windows on Arm
Microsoft presents RTX Spark as a combination of Windows and NVIDIA technology, with Windows scheduling and power-and-thermal work intended to support the platform. Its announcement also points to a higher system-memory limit accessible to the GPU and Prism emulation enhancements for x86 apps running on Windows on Arm. These platform statements explain the intended software environment; they do not substitute for testing the specific application, plugins and project files a buyer depends on. For workloads tied to CUDA, confirm support for the exact software stack and workflow, not just the presence of CUDA support in the product announcement.

What to verify before choosing a configuration
- Exact SKU: Confirm processor and GPU core counts and the installed memory on the official listing for your region.
- Price and availability: Use the current retailer or Microsoft listing; the figures reported before the event are not confirmed prices or delivery promises.
- Workflow fit: Check that the applications, plugins and CUDA-dependent tasks you use support Windows on Arm and the laptop’s shipping software configuration.
- Performance evidence: Wait for independent tests relevant to your workload. A meaningful comparison should identify the workload, power mode and whether testing was sustained and plugged in.
- Battery expectations: Treat “all-day” as Microsoft’s prerelease internal-test claim, not a guaranteed runtime for a particular workload.
