The Surface Laptop Ultra is the more graphics-focused, feature-rich 15-inch model; the Surface Laptop 8th Edition with Snapdragon is lighter and has longer battery-life estimates from Microsoft. The comparison depends on which Surface Laptop you mean: the figures below are for Microsoft’s 8th Edition Business Snapdragon models, in 13.8-inch and 15-inch sizes. Microsoft also lists an 8th Edition Intel version and other generations, so “Surface Laptop” alone does not identify one set of specifications.
At a glance
| Name | Best for | Key spec | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surface Laptop Ultra | People who need the documented NVIDIA RTX Spark graphics platform, a bright 15-inch display, or built-in HDMI and SD card connectivity | 15-inch PixelSense Ultra; RTX Spark N1X with an 18-core CPU/5,120-core GPU or 20-core CPU/6,144-core GPU | Nov 2026 |
| Surface Laptop 8th Edition, 13.8-inch, Snapdragon | People prioritizing the lighter chassis and Microsoft’s highest published battery estimates among these models | Snapdragon X2 Plus (10-core) or X2 Elite (12-core); 3.00 lb (1.36 kg) | Nov 2026 |
| Surface Laptop 8th Edition, 15-inch, Snapdragon | People who want a 15-inch screen in the lighter Snapdragon design | Snapdragon X2 Plus (10-core) or X2 Elite (12-core); 3.67 lb (1.66 kg) | Nov 2026 |
These are specifications for the named models, not a benchmark ranking. Microsoft’s cited Snapdragon information covers Business devices; check the exact edition, processor, size, and market listing before buying. Microsoft’s Surface Laptop Ultra specifications and 8th Edition Snapdragon specifications are the references for this comparison.
In short: compare the Ultra if its RTX platform, brighter screen, or built-in HDMI and SD reader match a specific need. Compare the Snapdragon models if lower listed weight or their higher manufacturer battery estimates matter more. For a same-size comparison, look at the 15-inch Snapdragon against the 15-inch Ultra; for the lightest option, consider the 13.8-inch Snapdragon.
What is the difference between Surface Laptop Ultra and Surface Laptop?
The clearest documented difference is the hardware emphasis: the Ultra pairs NVIDIA RTX Spark N1X processors and Blackwell RTX graphics with a 15-inch PixelSense Ultra display, while the cited 8th Edition Snapdragon models use Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 processors and Adreno graphics. The Ultra also weighs more and has a broader set of built-in connections; the Snapdragon models have higher Microsoft-published battery estimates.

That does not make “Surface Laptop” a single competing configuration. The relevant standard models here are the Surface Laptop for Business, 8th Edition, Snapdragon at 13.8 or 15 inches. Microsoft separately lists 8th Edition Intel configurations, and earlier generations may have different specifications. The 8th Edition Intel specifications establish that another processor edition exists, but the figures in this article should not be applied to it.
When you see a retailer listing that simply says “Surface Laptop,” look for the generation and processor in the full product name. Then confirm screen size and configuration. That prevents a common comparison mistake: carrying over the weight, port layout, battery figure, or processor details of one edition to another. The standard model in the tables below means the Snapdragon edition specifically, not every Surface Laptop.
Which model has the graphics hardware for your workload?
On paper, the Ultra is the choice to investigate first if your work depends on dedicated-class graphics hardware: Microsoft lists NVIDIA Blackwell RTX graphics in two RTX Spark N1X configurations. The Snapdragon models list Qualcomm Adreno graphics and an NPU rated up to 80 TOPS. Those specifications describe different hardware; they do not establish how quickly either laptop will complete a particular creative, gaming, or AI task.
Surface Laptop Ultra: RTX Spark N1X options
Microsoft lists an N1X configuration with an 18-core CPU and 5,120-core GPU, and another with a 20-core CPU and 6,144-core GPU. The Ultra uses unified LPDDR5x memory. The cited specifications do not provide benchmark results that would let a buyer quantify the performance difference between the two N1X options or compare either one directly with a Snapdragon device. Match the chosen configuration to the software’s documented system requirements rather than treating core counts as a promise of a particular frame rate or render time.
If a creative application names a GPU, graphics API, or minimum memory requirement, check those details before choosing a configuration. Likewise, a product page’s RTX label does not by itself prove that every game, plug-in, or professional feature will run as expected. Verify support for the exact application and version you use; the listed specifications do not provide application-by-application compatibility results.
Surface Laptop 8th Edition Snapdragon: X2 and Adreno
The 8th Edition Snapdragon lineup lists Snapdragon X2 Plus with a 10-core CPU or Snapdragon X2 Elite with a 12-core CPU, plus Qualcomm Adreno graphics. It also specifies an NPU of up to 80 TOPS. The NPU figure is a processor capability specification, not a measure of an application’s speed or a guarantee that a given AI feature will work; software support and the selected configuration matter.
If a program requires a particular GPU, driver, processor architecture, or AI feature, check that requirement against the exact model and application version. The specifications here do not settle application compatibility or show comparative performance in a named workload.

How do the displays compare?
Both product families offer 3:2 touchscreens with refresh rates up to 120 Hz, but Microsoft lists a higher brightness ceiling for the Ultra. All three cited models have 15-inch or smaller displays; the standard 8th Edition also has a 13.8-inch option for buyers who prefer a smaller screen.
| Model | Display | Resolution and format | Published brightness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surface Laptop Ultra | 15-inch PixelSense Ultra touchscreen | 3270 × 2180; 3:2; up to 120 Hz; 100% DCI-P3 | Up to 1,000 nits typical SDR and 2,000 nits peak HDR |
| Surface Laptop 8th Edition Snapdragon, 13.8-inch | 13.8-inch PixelSense Flow touchscreen | 2304 × 1536; 3:2; up to 120 Hz | Up to 600 nits typical SDR and 600 nits peak HDR |
| Surface Laptop 8th Edition Snapdragon, 15-inch | 15-inch PixelSense Flow touchscreen | 3270 × 2180; 3:2; up to 120 Hz | Up to 600 nits typical SDR and 600 nits peak HDR |
The shared 15-inch resolution means the listed Ultra and Snapdragon 15-inch models have the same pixel dimensions, but their display names and brightness specifications differ. Brightness is not the only factor in viewing comfort: room lighting, content, and settings affect what a screen looks like in use. The available specifications do not establish a direct visual-quality comparison beyond the stated figures.
The Ultra’s listed 100% DCI-P3 coverage is a useful specification to note if your work involves color, but it is not a substitute for checking your own color-management needs. The cited Snapdragon display specifications do not list a DCI-P3 percentage, so the comparison cannot establish whether one panel is more accurate in a particular workflow. Also note that the screens are touch-enabled, but neither the Ultra nor the cited 8th Edition Snapdragon display supports Surface Pen.
Which Surface Laptop is easier to carry?
The 13.8-inch Snapdragon model is the lightest of the three in Microsoft’s published weights, followed by the 15-inch Snapdragon; the Ultra is the heaviest. The 15-inch Ultra weighs 4.41 lb (2.0 kg), compared with 3.67 lb (1.66 kg) for the 15-inch Snapdragon and 3.00 lb (1.36 kg) for the 13.8-inch Snapdragon.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For someone who carries a laptop daily, those differences can matter as much as screen size. The 13.8-inch model is 1.41 lb (0.64 kg) lighter than the Ultra on the published figures, while the same-size 15-inch Snapdragon is 0.74 lb (0.34 kg) lighter. These are Microsoft specification-sheet weights, not independent measurements, and the full travel load will also include the charger and accessories.
In practical terms, the 13.8-inch model trades screen area for the lowest listed weight. The 15-inch Snapdragon keeps the same nominal screen size as the Ultra while shaving weight, based on Microsoft’s figures. The Ultra’s higher weight may be acceptable if its graphics platform or port selection is valuable to you, but it is worth including the power supply in your travel calculation too: Microsoft specifies a higher minimum charging wattage for the Ultra.
Do the battery-life estimates mean the Snapdragon models last longer?
Microsoft’s published estimates are higher for both Snapdragon sizes, but they come from separate preproduction tests with different devices and configurations. Treat them as manufacturer estimates under specified test conditions, not as a controlled head-to-head result or a prediction of your own runtime.

| Model | Local video playback estimate | Active web usage estimate | Microsoft’s test configuration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surface Laptop Ultra | Up to 15 hours | Up to 12 hours | Microsoft tested a preproduction RTX Spark N1X device with a 6,144-core GPU, 64GB RAM, and 1TB storage in September 2026. Video test: 1080p, 24 FPS file, 150-nit brightness, Wi-Fi. Web test: 12 popular websites across multiple tabs. |
| Surface Laptop 8th Edition Snapdragon, 13.8-inch | Up to 20 hours | Up to 16 hours | Microsoft tested a preproduction 16GB RAM, 512GB storage device in May 2026; testing used 150-nit display brightness and Wi-Fi. |
| Surface Laptop 8th Edition Snapdragon, 15-inch | Up to 19 hours | Up to 14 hours | Microsoft tested a preproduction 16GB RAM, 512GB storage device in May 2026, using a different processor selection from the 13.8-inch test; testing used 150-nit display brightness and Wi-Fi. |
Microsoft says battery life varies significantly with configuration, usage, network, settings, and other factors. Video playback and active web usage are specific test scenarios: sustained graphics work, frequent video calls, high brightness, or different network conditions may produce different results. Choose based on the workday and access to power you need, not on the maximum-hours figure alone.

The tests were also performed at different times: Microsoft tested the Ultra in September 2026 and the Snapdragon models in May 2026. The Ultra test used 64GB RAM and 1TB storage, while the Snapdragon tests used 16GB RAM and 512GB storage, and the two Snapdragon sizes used different processor selections. These are additional reasons not to read the figures as a direct efficiency contest. The figures still offer a useful view of Microsoft’s stated maximums under its test methods, with the caveat that real-world use can vary significantly.
Which one has the ports and card reader you need?
The Ultra has the broader listed port selection, particularly for external displays and full-size SD cards. The Snapdragon models provide USB-C/USB4 and USB-A, but their built-in card-reader options differ by size.
| Model | Listed connections |
|---|---|
| Surface Laptop Ultra | Two USB-C/USB4 ports, USB-C with Magnetic Connect, HDMI 2.1b, USB-A, SD card reader, 3.5 mm audio jack |
| Surface Laptop 8th Edition Snapdragon, 13.8-inch | Two USB-C/USB4 ports, USB-A, headphone jack, Surface Connect |
| Surface Laptop 8th Edition Snapdragon, 15-inch | Two USB-C/USB4 ports, USB-A, headphone jack, Surface Connect, MicroSDXC Express |
For a direct HDMI connection or a full-size SD card workflow, the Ultra’s listed ports may avoid an adapter. The 15-inch Snapdragon’s MicroSDXC Express slot is not the same listing as the Ultra’s SD card reader, and the 13.8-inch Snapdragon specifications do not list a card slot. Verify the exact SKU and regional specification before relying on a particular port.
Count the ports you will use at the same time, not just the number on the specification sheet. The Ultra lists two USB-C/USB4 ports as well as a separate USB-C with Magnetic Connect, HDMI 2.1b, USB-A, and an SD reader. The Snapdragon models list two USB-C/USB4 ports and USB-A; the 15-inch model adds MicroSDXC Express. If your setup depends on a particular card format, check that format against the device listing rather than assuming all card slots are interchangeable.
How do storage, repairability, and charging compare?
Both product pages list removable SSD storage and replaceable components, but they specify different SSD generations and charger minimums. Verify the exact capacity and configuration at purchase; a removable drive specification alone does not establish that any retail SSD will fit or describe the replacement procedure.
| Model | Listed SSD options | Charging requirement in Microsoft specifications |
|---|---|---|
| Surface Laptop Ultra | Removable 512GB Gen 4 SSD, or removable 1TB/2TB Gen 5 SSD | Minimum 115W Surface supply or USB-C PD charger |
| Surface Laptop 8th Edition Snapdragon | Removable 256GB/512GB/1TB/2TB Gen 4 SSD | Minimum 65W Surface supply or 60W USB-C PD charger |
The minimum charger wattage differs substantially: Microsoft specifies at least 115W for the Ultra and at least 60W over USB-C PD for the cited Snapdragon model. Charger inclusion varies by market and configuration, so check the listing rather than assuming one is in the box. A USB-C PD charger is an option only if it meets the minimum wattage Microsoft specifies for the model.

For the Snapdragon model, Microsoft’s listed minimum is 65W for a Surface supply or 60W for a USB-C PD charger. For the Ultra, Microsoft specifies a minimum 115W Surface supply or USB-C PD charger. When shopping for a replacement or travel charger, compare the charger’s USB-C PD output with the required wattage, and check the retailer’s bundle details for the selected configuration. No particular third-party charger is established as tested or endorsed here.
Removable storage can be relevant if you want to plan capacity or service options, but it is not enough information to order an SSD by capacity alone. The listed Ultra options include a 512GB Gen 4 drive and 1TB or 2TB Gen 5 drives; the Snapdragon listing names 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB Gen 4 options. Confirm physical compatibility and the replacement process for the exact SKU before purchasing a separate drive or planning a transfer.
How should you choose between them?
Choose by the constraint that matters most—graphics platform, portability, display, ports, or battery expectations—then confirm the exact processor edition and market configuration. The published specifications support a feature comparison, not a universal winner.
Choose the Surface Laptop Ultra if…
- You specifically need to evaluate the listed NVIDIA RTX Spark N1X and Blackwell RTX graphics configuration for your software or workflow.
- You want a 15-inch touchscreen with the Ultra’s stated brightness and 100% DCI-P3 specification.
- Built-in HDMI 2.1b and an SD card reader better suit your desk, display, or media-transfer setup.
- You are comfortable with the Ultra’s published 4.41 lb weight and its higher minimum charging requirement.
Choose a Surface Laptop 8th Edition Snapdragon if…
- Lower published weight is important; the 13.8-inch model is the lightest option here, and the 15-inch Snapdragon is lighter than the 15-inch Ultra.
- You prefer the battery estimates Microsoft publishes for the Snapdragon sizes, while recognizing the test limits and variability.
- You want to choose between 13.8-inch and 15-inch PixelSense Flow screens, or need the 15-inch model’s listed MicroSDXC Express slot.
- The Snapdragon processor and Adreno graphics meet your software requirements, and the device’s listed ports and charger specification suit your setup.
If neither set of advantages is decisive, make a short checklist before choosing: required application and processor support, preferred screen size, card and display connections, the capacity you need, and how often you carry the laptop away from power. Then compare the exact retail configurations available where you live. A model’s headline name is not enough to settle those details.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you check before buying?
Because “Surface Laptop” can refer to multiple generations and processor editions, verify that the retailer’s exact configuration matches the comparison you intend to make. Regional listings may also differ in availability, included accessories, ports, or storage configuration.
- Read the complete product name: confirm generation, screen size, and whether it is Snapdragon or Intel. Do not assume the 8th Edition Snapdragon figures apply to an Intel edition or another generation.
- Confirm the processor and memory configuration: the Ultra has two listed N1X CPU/GPU options, while the Snapdragon specifications name X2 Plus and X2 Elite variants.
- Check the exact ports: especially whether the specific unit has HDMI, SD or MicroSDXC Express, and the USB connections you need.
- Verify SSD capacity and charger details: Microsoft lists multiple storage options, and charger inclusion depends on the market and configuration.
- Compare local prices directly: the cited specifications do not establish live regional prices or exact consumer availability, so there is no reliable price verdict here.
Price deserves a direct, configuration-matched check: compare the same screen size where possible, then note processor, memory, SSD capacity, and included charger. A higher-capacity SSD or different processor can change the listed configuration, and availability can differ by region. There is no live regional pricing or exact consumer-availability information in the cited Microsoft specifications, so a single value judgment about which is cheaper would be unreliable.
