Ultimate if you have a Nintendo Switch and want to play with people nearby on one system or through local wireless. Choose Brawlhalla if you want a free-to-play game to try, need cross-play for friends on different platforms, or want matches advertised for up to eight players online or locally.
The practical differences are platform access, cost to start, group size, and online requirements. The official product details do not settle which game has better controls, netcode, competitive balance, or depth, so those preferences are best judged by playing them.

Which one fits your setup?
Choose Ultimate for Switch-based local play
Ultimate is the straightforward choice if your group has a Nintendo Switch and expects to gather around one system: Nintendo lists one-to-eight-player play on a single system. Local wireless supports two to eight players across systems. Nintendo also lists online play for two to four players, which requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership.
Nintendo mentions GameCube controllers for local play, but they are an option rather than a requirement. Additional accessories may be needed and are sold separately, so check compatibility and any adapter needs for the controller you plan to use.
#1 Best Overall
- New stages and fighters are joined by the combined rosters of every past Super Smash Bros. Game
- Challenge others anytime, anywhere, whether you're on the couch or on the go
- Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers
- Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
- Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer
Choose Brawlhalla for mixed-platform groups
Brawlhalla is the clearer fit when friends own different kinds of devices. Its official site lists PC, PlayStation 5 and 4, Xbox Series X|S and One, Switch, iOS, and Android, and advertises full cross-play among its listed platforms. That gives a cross-platform group a documented reason to start here.
The site also describes the game as free to play. That lowers the cost of trying the base game, although it is not a promise that every optional purchase is free. The official site reports “50+ Playable Legends”; it does not provide a dated exact roster count for a direct comparison with Ultimate.
How many people can play?
Do not compare the player totals without matching the mode: local play, local wireless, and online play are distinct setups.
- Ultimate, one system: one to eight players.
- Ultimate, local wireless: two to eight players.
- Ultimate, online: two to four players.
- Brawlhalla: up to eight players locally or online, according to its official site.
If the group wants more than four players online, the stated player limits point to Brawlhalla. For a large group together in one room, both games list options for up to eight, but the hardware and mode differ.

What does online play require?
For Ultimate, Nintendo says an active Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online membership are required for the specified online multiplayer feature. See Nintendo Support’s multiplayer requirements. This membership is an additional practical consideration beyond the paid game listing.
Brawlhalla‘s official site advertises online play and cross-play, but does not spell out all account, network, or purchase conditions. Do not assume that the absence of a stated membership requirement means there are no other conditions.
