They are not interchangeable. Hashi describes a design that keeps BTC on Bitcoin while making an equivalent representation available for Sui smart contracts, but its current page says the product is on devnet—not an operational mainnet borrowing option. Wrapped BTC such as WBTC is a token representation backed by BTC held in custody and moved across chains through cross-chain infrastructure. Before choosing either, decide whether you want to hold BTC exposure, bring BTC to Sui, lend it, or borrow against it; then check the exact asset, redemption route, and live market terms.
What is the difference between Sui Bitcoin collateral and wrapped Bitcoin?
The phrase “Bitcoin collateral on Sui” can refer to different arrangements. The key distinction is where the underlying BTC is held, what mechanism makes a Sui token or collateral position available, and which parties or systems are needed to redeem it.
| Design | Where the BTC is held or controlled | How it is used on Sui | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hashi’s described native-BTC collateral design | Hashi says BTC remains on the Bitcoin network. Its page describes a personalized 2-of-2 multisig deposit address and a Sui-validator monitoring and quorum process. | After Bitcoin confirmations and validator quorum, an equivalent BTC representation is minted on Sui for use in smart contracts. The described flow requires repaying before withdrawing native BTC. | Hashi’s current Sui Features page, accessed October 4, 2026, says Hashi is available on Sui devnet. This is not evidence of a mainnet borrowing market. The design details are Hashi’s own product descriptions, not an independent security assessment. |
| BitGo WBTC OFT on Sui | Sui’s December 5, 2025 article says each WBTC is backed 1:1 by BTC in BitGo custody. | WBTC is a token representation on Sui; the article describes LayerZero connectivity for supported cross-chain transfers. | Users rely on the custody, token-contract, cross-chain, and Sui application components. The article names lending venues that supported or were rolling out collateral support at publication; that does not establish present availability or terms. |
| Other BTC representations | Models vary by asset. Sui’s ecosystem listing includes custodial, threshold-signer, exchange-issued, and liquid-staked examples. | Each token has its own issuance, transfer, redemption, and potentially yield mechanics. | An ecosystem listing alone does not establish equivalent backing, redemption, collateral acceptance, or risk. |
Hashi’s described flow also names threshold Schnorr signatures, a guardian check, price oracles, and automated collateral and liquidation logic. Those are components to evaluate, not proof that the system has been independently audited or that a particular loan market is live. (Sui, “Sui Features | Hashi,” accessed October 4, 2026.)
Which BTC tokens are available on Sui?
Sui’s BTCfi ecosystem listing includes FBTC, LBTC, mBTC, stBTC, tBTC, WBTC, xBTC, and yBTC. The listing is a discovery aid, not a guarantee that an asset is currently supported by every Sui app or can be redeemed on identical terms.

These descriptions come from Sui’s “BTCfi on Sui | Earn Yield on Your Bitcoin” ecosystem listing and its December 5, 2025 WBTC article. They do not, by themselves, establish each token’s current redemption process, reserves, contract controls, market depth, or acceptance as collateral.
How should you compare the risks?
There is no single “native versus wrapped” label that captures the risk. A position may depend on several independent pieces working correctly, and borrowing adds risks beyond simply holding a token.

1. Custody and control of the underlying BTC
Find out whether BTC remains on Bitcoin, sits with a custodian, or is controlled through signers or a bridge arrangement. Identify who can authorize a release, under what conditions, and what happens if that mechanism is unavailable. Hashi’s page describes its deposit and validator process; Sui’s WBTC article identifies BitGo custody. For other representations, consult the documentation for the exact asset rather than inferring custody from its ticker.
2. Cross-chain, signer, and smart-contract dependencies
Map the components between your BTC and your Sui position: the Bitcoin deposit or custody arrangement, any signer or cross-chain messaging layer, the token contract, Sui validators where relevant, and the lending application. A failure or exploit in one component can create a problem even if the others remain functional. Sui’s descriptions of Hashi and WBTC identify different trust assumptions; neither label makes the full chain of dependencies disappear.

3. Redemption and exit route
Read the withdrawal instructions for the exact token and protocol. Confirm the steps, confirmation requirements, fees, supported asset version, and whether an exit depends on a custodian, signers, bridge operations, or protocol availability. Hashi’s described flow requires repayment before native BTC withdrawal; WBTC transfers to or from Sui use a supported cross-chain route. Do not assume that selling a token on Sui is equivalent to redeeming BTC.
4. Lending and liquidation exposure
If you borrow against BTC, the accepted asset and the loan parameters matter as much as the token design. Check the protocol’s live documentation and app for the exact token type, loan-to-value ratio (LTV), liquidation threshold, price oracle, borrow rate, supply and borrow caps, and available liquidity. An adverse price move or oracle and contract issue can cause liquidation; the specific outcome depends on the market’s rules.

5. Yield-bearing asset behavior
Liquid-staked or staking-related tokens such as LBTC and stBTC should not be treated as identical to a simple BTC representation. Check how rewards accrue, whether the token’s exchange rate changes, and how the lending market values it. Those mechanics can affect collateral valuation and liquidation exposure.
6. Your intended use
- Hold BTC exposure on Sui: focus on backing, custody or signer controls, token contracts, and the route back to BTC.
- Move BTC to Sui: verify that the cross-chain route supports the exact asset and network you hold, and understand which intermediaries or protocols it depends on.
- Lend or supply liquidity: confirm the exact asset is accepted in the specific market and review its current depth and terms. Lending and liquidity-pool positions have different risks.
- Borrow against BTC: assess liquidation and oracle exposure, and remember that leverage can magnify losses. A collateral token being listed in an ecosystem does not prove a live borrowing market exists.
How do you check whether a Sui collateral market is actually usable?
Sui’s December 5, 2025 WBTC article named AlphaLend, Bucket Protocol, NAVI, and SuiLend as venues supporting or rolling out WBTC collateral-market support. Sui’s separate ecosystem article also lists BTC assets and venues. Those pages are not a current parameter sheet, and a named integration is not confirmation that deposits or borrowing are available today.

- Open the protocol’s current app and documentation. Confirm the market is live, not announced or rolling out.
- Match the precise asset. Check the token type or contract identifier shown by the protocol; a ticker alone may not distinguish versions or bridged representations.
- Read the current risk parameters. Find LTV, liquidation threshold, oracle, borrow rate, and supply and borrow caps. If a value is not published, do not assume it.
- Check liquidity and exit conditions. Review available borrowing and supply depth, and confirm how you can withdraw or repay if market conditions change.
- Verify the asset’s own redemption documentation. Understand the route from the Sui token back to BTC and any custodian, signer, or cross-chain dependencies involved.
Market support and parameters can change. The cited Sui ecosystem summaries do not establish the present-day values for those settings, so consult the relevant app and protocol documentation before depositing.
Which option should you choose?
There is not a universal best BTC asset for Sui. Hashi’s approach is relevant if you are evaluating a design intended to use native BTC as collateral, but its current Sui page identifies devnet availability. WBTC is a distinct custodial token representation with cross-chain infrastructure, and its use in a loan depends on the exact market being live and accepting that token. Other Sui BTC assets add still different custody, signer, issuance, or staking mechanics.
Choose only after matching the product to your intended action and verifying the exact asset, redemption path, and current protocol terms. If you cannot establish who controls the underlying BTC, how the token can be redeemed, and what happens under liquidation or an outage, the ticker or “1:1-backed” description is not enough to make the comparison.
