Which material is easier to clean?
For ordinary surface dirt, leather is usually simpler. Nike’s general shoe-cleaning guide recommends brushing away loose dirt before cleaning with a mild solution. It cautions against hard scrubbing, which can damage leather. The right method still depends on the sneaker’s exact leather finish; general advice does not mean every leather shoe tolerates water or the same cleaner equally.
Suede requires more attention to timing and technique. Nike describes it as moisture-absorbing and prone to stains, and warns against starting with soap or water. Mud or moisture should dry before you brush, and surface marks may call for a suede eraser. Nike’s guide, last updated 16 October 2023, calls suede “notoriously difficult to clean.”
How do routine care needs compare?

How to clean suede sneakers
- Wait for mud or moisture to dry. Nike warns that working on wet suede can create or worsen a stain.
- Brush gently while dry. Use a suede brush or toothbrush to lift dry surface dirt. Nike advises against starting this step with soap or water.
- Address remaining surface marks. Use a suede eraser or rubber, then brush gently to lift the nap.
- Check the maker’s instructions for stubborn stains. A household treatment that works for one suede shoe is not established as safe for every finish.
- Use protector only if compatible. Timberland notes that its protector may darken lighter suede. If its instructions permit, test a small, inconspicuous area first; do not assume protector prevents stains.
How to clean leather sneakers
- Brush off loose dirt. Start with a dry shoe brush so grit does not get rubbed into the surface.
- Clean with a mild solution. Use a soft cloth or brush and follow the sneaker maker’s directions for its specific leather finish.
- Use a light touch. Nike cautions that hard scrubbing can damage leather.
- Consider conditioner only when appropriate. Nike lists leather conditioner as optional; it is not required for every sneaker or finish.
What should you check before using a product?
“Leather” covers different finishes, and brand guidance can differ by shoe. Check the sneaker’s care label or manufacturer instructions before applying cleaner, conditioner, or protector. Test a product on a small, inconspicuous area when its directions recommend it, especially if a change in color would be a concern. For suede, a brush-and-eraser kit is optional, but those are the dedicated tools Nike names for dry dirt and surface marks. A cleaner or protector should be used only if its instructions say it is compatible with the shoe’s material. Which should you choose if easy maintenance matters?
If low-effort routine cleaning is the priority, leather is generally the easier choice. Suede can be cared for successfully, but it asks for more deliberate handling—particularly when wet or muddy—and commonly benefits from a suede brush and eraser. The choice is not a guarantee about water resistance or durability: the particular shoe’s finish and maker’s care instructions determine which products and methods are appropriate.
