It does not host the streams or provide playback itself: it hands a selected stream to a media player configured on your computer.
What StreamTuner2 does
StreamTuner2 organizes listings from online directories into categories or genres and lets you search for stations. When you choose an entry, the application passes its stream to an external player. Recording, when configured, also relies on external software rather than a built-in recorder.
That makes StreamTuner2 a discovery and launch layer—not a streaming service, account-based subscription platform or all-in-one player. The Debian package description says commercial and sign-up services are not an objective of the project: Debian package description.
How to browse and listen
- Open a directory or category. The graphical interface presents directory listings by categories or genres; you can also search for a station.
- Select a listing. The available entry depends on the directory plugin and its current connection to the service.
- Launch playback. StreamTuner2 sends the selected stream to the external media player configured for that format. Set up a compatible player in the application if playback does not start.
The unstable Debian man page documents command-line options and external-player settings for that package: StreamTuner2 man page. Commands and settings can differ between package versions.

Directories and sources named in the documentation
Project and package documentation lists sources including Shoutcast, MyOggRadio, Xiph.org, TuneIn, Jamendo, SurfMusic, RadioBrowser, SomaFM, Streema and YouTube. These are directory or media sources exposed through plugins, not a promise that every plugin or endpoint works today. Each service can change independently of StreamTuner2.
Before relying on a particular directory, check whether it appears and responds in the version you installed. A listing in the documentation alone does not confirm present-day availability.

Playback, recording and other features
- External players: Configure players for different audio formats; StreamTuner2 hands streams off rather than decoding and playing them as a self-contained service.
- Recording: The documented workflow can use external tools such as streamripper or youtube-dl. Availability depends on having a compatible tool installed and configured.
- Bookmarks and playlists: The application includes bookmarks and playlist export.
- Configuration and extensions: Documentation describes JSON configuration and cache files, a command-line interface and an extensible plugin scheme.
Linux and BSD compatibility: check the package age
StreamTuner2 is described as Python software for Linux and BSD, with Python and GTK packages required according to its GitHub README. Installation details and plugin behavior depend on the distribution and package version; check those before following instructions written for a different system.
The SourceForge project page reports a last update of 2022-02-22: StreamTuner2 on SourceForge. Debian source metadata identifies version 2.2.2: Debian source package 2.2.2. Those details describe the cited project page and Debian package, not necessarily the version currently available for your distribution.

The project README warns that some distributions may still ship older 2.0.x versions whose channel plugins “barely work anymore,” and recommends a newer release or manual installation in that situation: StreamTuner2 README. Consequently, an installation that opens successfully may still have directory channels that no longer function. The available documentation does not establish which individual plugins currently respond.
StreamTuner2 versus StreamTuner-ng
StreamTuner-ng is a separate reimagining described as using PySide6 and libmpv: StreamTuner-ng project. It is not the original StreamTuner2, and its player or platform capabilities should not be assumed to apply to StreamTuner2.

Is StreamTuner2 a good fit?
It may suit someone who wants a desktop interface for browsing several radio and media directories and is comfortable configuring external players. Before choosing it, consider whether the specific directories you want are currently functional, whether its external-player workflow fits your setup, and whether the available package is maintained for your distribution. If you need dependable access to a particular station, check whether you can open its stream directly in your preferred player as a fallback.
