In chess, both players can see every piece and its location. In Stratego, opposing ranks are concealed, so a player must infer what a piece might be as well as decide how to respond to its position. That changes the risks of moving, attacking, and setting up for the game.
What information can each player see?
Stratego hides opposing ranks
Under the International Stratego Federation (ISF) tournament rules, each player places pieces in the four rows nearest them with their backs facing the opponent. During ordinary play, the opponent can see where a piece is, but not its rank. A move may therefore provide clues without identifying the piece outright. The ISF rules are based on Jumbo Stratego Original Game Rules, version 2006, and serve as standard criteria for tournaments seeking ISF rating; editions and house rules can differ. Chess shows the whole position
Under FIDE’s over-the-board laws, chess is played on an 8-by-8 board with the standard initial pieces. Both players can see each piece’s identity and square. The uncertainty is not what a piece is, but which move the opponent will choose and how the resulting visible position should be evaluated. FIDE’s cited English laws took effect on 1 January 2023. How hidden information changes Stratego decisions
Attacking is also a test
In Stratego combat, the attacker reveals and names the attacking piece’s rank before the defender reveals the attacked piece. The lower-ranked piece is removed; if ranks are equal, both are removed. An attack can therefore win material, lose a valuable piece, trade both pieces, or expose information that helps with later decisions. Chess captures, by contrast, are based on visible identities, movement rules, and squares.

There are important exceptions that make a hidden piece’s identity especially consequential: Scouts can attack along a clear straight line, Miners can defuse Bombs, and the Spy has a special attack against the Marshal. These interactions mean that a piece’s apparent vulnerability or the opponent’s willingness to attack may be evidence, but it is not proof of the hidden rank.
Position and behavior become evidence
Stratego players reason from partial clues: where an opponent moves a piece, whether it avoids contact, and what happens when it attacks or is attacked. They also choose an initial deployment, which can protect important pieces or create misleading patterns. Chess begins from a fixed standard position under the cited FIDE laws, so there is no equivalent hidden deployment to decode.

The objectives and risks are different
Stratego is centered on capturing the flag
The central objective is to capture the opponent’s Flag, and any piece can capture it. Bombs cannot move; a piece other than a Miner that attacks a Bomb is destroyed. This creates a practical information problem: players must locate a possible Flag while identifying and managing threats, and Miners may be needed to clear a route.
Chess is centered on checkmate
Chess’s objective under FIDE’s laws is to checkmate the opponent’s King. Because the board state is visible, players can calculate legal moves and threats from known piece identities and locations. Stratego combines that kind of positional planning with the additional uncertainty of hidden ranks and combat outcomes.

Does hidden information make Stratego more strategic?
Not in any universal sense. The games ask for different kinds of strategic judgment. Chess emphasizes calculation and evaluation from a shared, visible position. Stratego also rewards inference from incomplete evidence, decisions about what information to reveal, and risk management when a piece’s rank is unknown. Both require predicting an opponent; hidden information changes the basis for those predictions rather than establishing that one game is harder or more strategic.
The scale of Stratego’s decision space is one indication of its complexity: a 2022 DeepMind research paper estimated its game tree at approximately 10535 nodes. That figure is the paper’s estimate, not a directly counted total. The paper also reported a top-three all-time Gravon ranking for its DeepNash system in 2022; that is a historical result, not a current ranking. Read the DeepNash paper.

Which game should you try?
Choose chess if you want a game where every piece and square is visible and the challenge is calculating how the position can change. Try a Stratego board game if you want the extra puzzle of learning about opposing pieces through their choices and encounters. Hasbro’s linked instruction page is for STRATEGO Game, model 04714, and describes a two-to-four-player game; rules and setup can vary by edition.
