You cannot guarantee that a Windows 11 PC will never restart during a 24/7 OBS broadcast. The practical fix is to set active hours across as much of the stream as Windows allows, schedule required restarts for a planned maintenance window, and check update status before a long broadcast. Pause updates only as a temporary buffer. OBS automatic reconnect may help after a connection drop, but it does not prevent Windows from restarting the computer.
Set Windows Update controls around your broadcast
These steps apply to Windows 11. Menu labels and behavior can vary by Windows version and device. Microsoft describes active hours as a way to control when automatic restarts happen, not a 24/7 lockout. For a continuous stream, treat a maintenance window and a recovery plan as essential.

Set active hours
Open Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours. Set the hours to cover your usual broadcast period. A daily active-hours window may not cover every hour of a true round-the-clock stream, so do not rely on it as a complete block against interruption. Schedule a required restart
Check Settings > Windows Update before starting a long broadcast. If an update requires a restart, use Schedule the restart and choose a time before going live or during an interruption you accept. Avoid leaving a pending restart until Windows chooses a less convenient time.

Pause updates only for a short-term buffer
Go to Settings > Windows Update > Pause updates and select an end date. Microsoft’s current instructions allow pausing for up to 35 days. During the pause, updates requiring a restart are not downloaded or installed; when the pause ends, Windows checks for and installs the latest available updates. Microsoft states that pausing “doesn’t permanently turn off automatic updates.” See Pause updates in Windows.
Use this as a temporary planning measure, not a permanent streaming configuration. Keep a maintenance window to install updates and restart deliberately.

Windows keeps notification settings separate from update timing controls. Microsoft’s Do not disturb guidance covers notifications; use Windows Update settings for restart planning.
What Windows 11’s newer restart behavior means for streamers
In an article published August 14, 2026, Microsoft said that, starting with updates released on and after July 28, 2026, selected restart-requiring updates are combined with the monthly security update to require one restart. The described experience applies to Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1, and is rolling out gradually. Microsoft says the restart is scheduled outside active hours whenever possible.

This is not a guarantee of one restart in every circumstance or of uninterrupted streaming. Microsoft lists exceptions, including some critical or expedited drivers, emergency or out-of-band updates, Defender security intelligence updates, and AI component updates; it also says combined updates will not be held indefinitely. Check Microsoft’s description of the monthly restart behavior for its rollout and scope.
Configure OBS as a recovery layer
OBS can be set to attempt reconnection if the stream connection drops, but that is separate from Windows Update and cannot prevent an operating-system restart. Use the OBS Auto-Configuration Wizard to establish a starting setup based on your hardware and network, then test the stream before depending on it. For a 24/7 broadcast, test what happens after a planned PC restart rather than assuming OBS will restore the entire broadcast automatically. The cited OBS guidance does not promise that OBS will reopen a YouTube stream after a full computer restart.
Troubleshooting update interruptions
- Windows restarts during active hours: Check whether a restart was already pending and whether the active-hours window covers the relevant time. Schedule a restart for a planned gap rather than treating active hours as a lockout.
- You see an update notification but the stream is still running: Do not confuse notification visibility with restart control. Do not disturb can silence banners; review Windows Update for status and restart options.
- A pause expires during a broadcast: Check its end date before a long stream. Windows resumes checking for and installing available updates when the pause ends, so plan to resume updates and restart during maintenance.
- OBS reconnects after a brief network drop but not after a reboot: Automatic Reconnect is for dropped connections, not a substitute for recovering the PC and restarting the broadcast after Windows restarts.
Windows 10 users: check support status
Microsoft says support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025, including free Windows Update software updates and security fixes. If the streaming PC still runs Windows 10, check its support status and your upgrade or support options rather than assuming Windows 11 update guidance applies unchanged.
