You can move a small AI app off your laptop and give it a hosted URL without paying upfront—but “free” hosting has limits. The host runs your app code; it does not automatically move a model installed on your laptop, pay for a third-party AI API, preserve files on temporary storage, or keep the app awake around the clock.
Choose a host based on the app you already have: Streamlit Community Cloud for a Streamlit app, Render for a general web service, Cloud Run for a source-directory or container deployment, or Hugging Face Spaces for an ML demo. Check each service’s current quotas, privacy settings, and billing terms before publishing; providers can change them.
Choose a host that fits your app
The simplest route is usually the one that matches your existing framework. These options are not equivalent: they differ in supported app types, startup behavior, privacy, and what “free” covers.
| Host | Best fit | What the free option establishes | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Streamlit Community Cloud | Existing Streamlit apps deployed from a repository. | The service provides a repository-based deployment flow and a streamlit.app URL. Streamlit describes Community Cloud as suited to non-commercial, personal, and educational apps. |
The cited overview does not establish a universal always-on guarantee or a free allowance for third-party model APIs. |
| Render | General web services such as FastAPI, Flask, Express, and Django, plus static sites. | Free web services are available, and static sites are free within included usage amounts. | Free web services sleep after inactivity, use ephemeral filesystems, and are not recommended by Render for production applications. |
| Google Cloud Run | Source-directory deployments or containerized server apps. | Cloud Run has a monthly free allowance; Google lists up to 2 million requests per month, alongside compute and outbound-transfer limits. | Billing account configuration and eligibility apply; usage beyond free limits on a paid account is billed. Trial credit is separate from the recurring free allowance. |
| Hugging Face Spaces | ML demos, including eligible Gradio Spaces, and static projects. | Static Spaces are free. Eligible free personal accounts in good standing can host up to two Gradio Spaces running on ZeroGPU. | Gradio and Docker Spaces generally require paid plans to create. Public Spaces expose source and app; visibility settings change what visitors can see. |
These are platform-specific terms, not a promise that every app or workload will stay free. For example, an app that calls a hosted model API may incur API charges even when its web host is within its free allowance.

Work out where inference will run
Hosting the interface and running the AI model are separate jobs. If your app sends prompts to a hosted model API, the deployed app needs network access and a securely configured API key; the model inference happens at the API provider. Hosting the app does not make those requests free.
If the model is installed on your laptop and runs locally, moving only the app code to a cloud host will not move that model with it. You must either configure a hosted model endpoint or package and serve the model on the host. The latter needs sufficient memory and compute. Cloud Run supports GPU-configured services, including L4 GPUs, but this does not establish that GPU inference for an unspecified model is free. Do not assume a large model can run within a free web-hosting tier.

Prepare the app before deployment
Before connecting a host, make sure the app can be reconstructed outside your laptop. This avoids a common failure: a deployment that works locally only because of packages, files, or environment settings that were never included.
- Declare dependencies in the format your project uses, such as
requirements.txtfor a Python app, and identify the app’s entry point. - Write down the build and start commands the host should run. For a web service, the app must start an HTTP server on the port and interface expected by its host.
- Test from a clean environment if possible, so undeclared packages or assumptions about local files are easier to spot.
- Move API keys and passwords out of source code. Do not commit secrets to a public or private repository.
- Identify any data the app writes. If that data must survive a restart, use a suitable database or object store and check that service’s pricing and retention terms.
Deploy with the workflow that matches your project
Streamlit Community Cloud
- Push the app to a GitHub repository and confirm that its dependencies and entry-point file are included.
- Open Streamlit Community Cloud and start a deployment. Select the repository, branch, and app entry-point file as described in Streamlit’s deployment guide.
- Choose a supported Python version and add credentials in the deployment’s secrets field rather than in the code. The documentation accessed for this article listed Python 3.12 as the default and says to use a released version still receiving security updates; check the current page because runtime support can change.
- Deploy, inspect the app, and share the assigned
streamlit.appURL. Test the app’s model calls and data behavior after deployment, not just whether the page loads.
Render for a general web service
- Push the app to a repository connected through a Git provider supported by Render.
- In the Render dashboard, create a Web Service for a server-side app. Use a Static Site only when the app is a static front end that does not need a server process. See Render’s deployment guide.
- Set the build command, start command, runtime, and required environment variables. Store secrets in the host’s supported configuration rather than the repository.
- Deploy and check the logs and hosted URL. Verify the app after it has been idle and started again; free web services may have a cold start.
Cloud Run from a source directory
- Install and configure the Google Cloud CLI, select a Google Cloud project, and make sure billing is configured as required for your account and intended use.
- From the app’s source directory, run
gcloud run deploy SERVICE --source ., replacingSERVICEwith the service name. Google’s source deployment flow uses buildpacks and Cloud Build by default, so a local Docker installation is not required for that path. - Follow the prompts to choose a region and configure access. Review the resulting service URL and logs, then verify that the service starts and can reach any model endpoint it depends on.
- For API keys, passwords, and other sensitive values, Google recommends Secret Manager rather than putting secrets in source code or ordinary environment-variable configuration. Follow Google’s Cloud Run secrets guidance.
Hugging Face Spaces for an ML demo
Create a Space using a supported SDK and follow the platform’s overview and current account rules. Choose visibility deliberately: public Spaces expose source and the app; protected Spaces hide the source while leaving the running app publicly accessible; private Spaces restrict both the app and its source. The availability of free compute depends on Space type and account eligibility, so confirm the current terms before choosing Gradio or Docker.

What “free” means in practice
A free tier is a bounded allowance, not a guarantee of unlimited or uninterrupted service. Google Cloud documents up to 2 million Cloud Run requests per month in its free tier, as well as compute and outbound-transfer limits. Google also advertises $300 in credit for 90 days to new customers; that trial is separate from the monthly free tier. If a paid account exceeds its free limits, usage is billed, and trial resources can stop when the trial ends if the account is not upgraded. Check the Cloud Run free-tier details and Google Cloud Free Program terms for current eligibility and billing rules.
Render’s free web services spin down after 15 minutes without inbound traffic and take about a minute to spin back up, according to its free-plan documentation. The service can restart at any time, and its local filesystem is ephemeral: changes are lost when it restarts, redeploys, or spins down. Render says not to use free instances for production applications. Its free Postgres database has a 1 GB limit and expires 30 days after creation, followed by a 14-day upgrade grace period before deletion. Static sites are free but count against included bandwidth and build-pipeline amounts.

Streamlit Community Cloud’s overview positions it for non-commercial, personal, and educational apps. Hugging Face’s free compute is tied to specific Space types and account status rather than a general-purpose GPU promise. In either case, confirm the current plan and usage terms before relying on the service for an app that needs steady availability or substantial inference.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Protect data and avoid surprise downtime
- Keep credentials private. Use provider-supported secret settings. A key embedded in browser-delivered code or committed to a repository can be exposed.
- Do not treat a host’s local disk as durable storage. Render explicitly documents ephemeral storage for its free web services. For other platforms, check the storage behavior and persistence terms rather than assuming files survive restarts.
- Plan for idle starts. A sleeping service can make the first request slow. If that delay is unacceptable, check whether the host offers a suitable paid option or choose an architecture with the availability you need.
- Set usage and billing safeguards. Review the host’s quotas and billing settings, and separately inspect any model API’s charges. A free app host does not cap a bill from an independent inference provider.
- Decide what visitors can access. Public code can reveal implementation details or accidentally committed data. Select repository and app visibility intentionally, and never rely on obscurity to protect secrets.
Troubleshoot common deployment problems
The build cannot find a package
Check that the dependency is declared in the file the platform reads and that the version is compatible with the selected runtime. Review the build log for the first missing package or installation error rather than changing several settings at once.

- 【Versatile Connectivity】Stay connected with multiple ports including USB 3.0 Type-C, USB 3.0 Type-A, and a headphone/mic combo jack, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth for seamless wireless networking.
The service deploys but the page does not load
Confirm that you deployed a web service rather than static hosting for a server-side app, and verify the start command and port configuration. Use the host’s runtime logs to find startup failures or exceptions.
The app works until it restarts
Check whether it depends on files written to the host’s local filesystem. Move data that must persist to a database or object store, and verify that service’s retention and cost terms.
The first visit is slow
Check whether the selected free plan sleeps after inactivity. If it does, a cold start is expected; test behavior after the app has been idle instead of judging it only while the process is warm.
Model calls fail after deployment
Confirm that the API key is configured in the host’s secret settings, that the deployed app reads the correct variable name, and that any provider-side quota or billing requirement is satisfied. Never paste the key into a public issue or log.
