If clip-on earbuds keep slipping, correct their position first; if they sound quiet, aim the speaker toward the ear canal and check for a blocked sound outlet before assuming they are faulty. These earbuds sit outside the canal rather than forming an in-ear seal, so lighter bass, competing background noise and some sound leakage can be normal. The key is to separate that open-ear tradeoff from a poor fit, dirty speaker mesh, device setting or connection problem.
Work through one change at a time: correct which ear each bud is on, adjust its contact points while audio plays, then inspect the sound outlet and check the phone’s settings. A small shift can improve both retention and audibility. If a carefully adjusted pair still slips during ordinary movement, however, the shape may not suit your ears; no angle or accessory can be assumed to solve every mismatch.
Why do clip-on earbuds keep slipping?
The most common first thing to correct is placement: a clip can be in the wrong spot or at the wrong angle. Ear shape, skin friction and movement matter too, so there is no single position that fits every ear or every clip-on design.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck the orientation and contact points
- Match the left and right earbuds to the correct ears. Check the L/R markings rather than relying on how the housings look.
- Put the speaker or acoustic element in front. The battery compartment or control housing should not be the part positioned where the speaker is meant to sit.
- Place the clip on the intended part of the ear. Depending on the design, that may be a thinner section of the outer edge or the ridge just inside the ear opening. Follow the model’s own diagram if its shape is unfamiliar.
- Make small adjustments while audio is playing. Slide or rotate the earbud a little at a time. A small change can improve both stability and the direction of the sound.
- Try the supplied grip, if there is one. A larger model-specific grip may improve retention. Do not assume a grip made for another model will fit.
Manufacturer directions illustrate why it is better to start with the model’s own guidance than to copy a universal angle. Raycon advises that its control button face downward and its round speaker rest against the ridge inside the ear; it describes a position from straight up-and-down to a slight forward tilt of 0 to 30 degrees. Soundcore says AeroClip users should clip the earbud onto the thinnest point of the outer edge and reposition it while listening. Its AeroClip documentation lists M and L ear grips, with larger grips intended to provide more stability for a loose fit.

When testing the position, keep the movement modest. Try a slight slide up or down, then a small rotation, and listen for changes in both the sound and how securely the clip rests. If audio improves but the bud feels as if it is being forced into place, back off and try another position. Comfort and stability matter as much as getting the speaker close to the canal.
Does the angle matter?
Yes, but the useful angle depends on the design. These are manufacturer-specific starting points, not a standard measurement for all clip-on earbuds:
| Model guidance | Positioning advice | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Raycon clip-on earbuds | Control button down; round speaker resting against the inner ridge; a slight forward tilt of 0 to 30 degrees may be comfortable. | Raycon’s guidance for its clip design. |
| Huawei FreeClip | Acoustic Ball in front, facing the canal; Comfort Bean behind the ear. For workouts, move the Comfort Bean down toward the back of the ear, with the C-bridge about 30 degrees from horizontal. | Huawei FreeClip guidance, including its workout position. |
| Bose Ultra Open | Check the fit in a mirror and try an approximately 45-degree angle. | Bose Ultra Open troubleshooting guidance. |
Use the listed angle only as a starting point for that model. If a position feels pinching, unstable or uncomfortable, do not force the earbud into it; adjust it gently or consult the model’s instructions. A number in one manufacturer’s instructions should not be transferred to a differently shaped clip or bridge.
How do I make open-ear earbuds stay on?
After correcting the basic position, look for a retention problem that changes with your ear or activity. If they still slip from clean, dry ears during ordinary movement after careful adjustment, the shape of the earbud may not suit your ear.
Account for ear shape and friction
Ear hooks and clips rely on contact with the outer ear, so the amount of support differs from person to person. Xiaomi notes that ear size and shape affect how well an ear hook supports the ear, and that small or flat ears may provide less support. It also identifies vigorous movement and dry, smooth skin as conditions that can make slipping more likely. Nothing likewise notes that ear shapes vary and that fit may take adjustment, particularly for first-time users.
For exercise, make sure the clip is not perched on a point where movement can easily dislodge it. Huawei’s FreeClip workout guidance moves the Comfort Bean lower toward the back of the ear and recommends wiping away sweat. Clean, dry contact surfaces can help, but they cannot change the basic geometry of a clip that does not fit your ear.
Pay attention to when the slipping starts. A bud that feels stable while sitting still but shifts during vigorous movement may need a model-specific workout adjustment or a different retention shape. A bud that slips during routine activity even after placement checks points more toward a persistent fit mismatch. These observations help narrow the likely cause; they do not guarantee that a particular accessory or repositioning will work.

If a clip-on pair repeatedly slips despite careful positioning and a clean, dry ear, treat that as a possible fit mismatch rather than a problem that every accessory will solve. A different clip shape, C-bridge or over-ear-hook design may provide a better contact point. If the priority is maximum stability during vigorous activity, compare how each design rests on your own ear and check its model-specific fit guidance before choosing.

When comparing alternatives, look beyond the word “open-ear.” A clip, C-bridge and ear hook hold the ear in different ways; a design with adjustable grips may offer more ways to tune contact than one with a fixed shape. Consider whether its speaker can sit close to your canal without pressure, and whether the manufacturer gives a specific exercise position. Also account for care: sweat cleanup and keeping the speaker mesh, ports and charging contacts clear are part of owning earbuds used for workouts.
Why are my clip-on earbuds so quiet?
Quiet sound does not automatically mean a defect. Because open-ear earbuds do not seal the canal, they can have lighter bass and let ambient sound compete with the audio; some sound can also leak outward. Soundcore describes these as expected tradeoffs of its open-ear design.
This is a different listening experience from a sealed in-ear earbud. In a quiet room, an open clip-on pair may be easy to hear, while traffic, gym noise or other steady background sound can mask it. If the level seems acceptable at home but weak in a noisy place, that pattern may reflect the open design rather than a fault. The same openness that lets you remain aware of your surroundings also means the earbuds do not provide the same isolation as a sealed or noise-canceling option.

Bring the speaker closer and aim it toward the canal
Start by checking where the sound outlet points. The acoustic element should face toward the ear canal and sit close to it without being inserted. Soundcore recommends changing the wearing angle so the sound outlets are closer to the canals. Bose gives a model-specific adjustment for Ultra Open: if audio is quiet, slide the earbuds down slightly so the speaker ports are closer to the canal.
This adjustment is especially relevant in places with steady background noise, such as outdoors near traffic or in a gym. The earbud may be working normally while the surroundings mask the sound. If the same content is clear in a quiet room but harder to hear in a noisy setting, consider whether an open design meets the listening need rather than raising the volume indefinitely.
For a useful check, play familiar content at a comfortable level in a quieter space and compare the sound after a small placement adjustment. If the sound changes as the outlet moves closer or faces the canal more directly, alignment is likely contributing. If only one side stays much quieter in the same position, continue with the port, balance and connection checks below rather than assuming the open-ear tradeoff explains everything.
Do not use maximum volume as the first fix
First correct the speaker direction and check the sound path. Soundcore recommends keeping volume at 50% or lower in quiet environments when sound leakage is a concern, while noting that noisier environments may call for an adjustment. That is Soundcore’s guidance, not a universal hearing-safety threshold or a rule for every device. If you need consistently strong isolation or bass, Soundcore identifies in-ear or noise-canceling headphones as better suited to that use.
There is a tradeoff in turning up an open-ear pair: it may make the audio easier for you to hear, but it does not make the housing seal the canal, and sound may still leak to people nearby. In a quiet place, follow the maker’s leakage guidance and lower the level if others can hear it. In a noisy place, repeated need to raise the volume is a reason to reconsider whether open-ear listening is the right design for that setting.

Why is one clip-on earbud quieter than the other?
A difference between sides can come from fit, a blocked speaker outlet, device settings or a connection issue. Work through those checks in order so you do not mistake a simple alignment or pairing problem for failed hardware.
Check the quieter side’s position and speaker ports
Compare the two earbuds while wearing them: confirm the quieter one is on the correct ear, its speaker faces the canal and it sits at a similar distance from the ear opening. Inspect the mesh and ports for debris or wax. Bose advises clearing debris or wax from its speaker ports, and Soundcore says to clean AeroClip’s mesh every three months or when there is a significant drop in volume.
Use the cleaning method in the manufacturer’s instructions and avoid pushing debris farther into a port. If the mesh looks clear, try another track or application. Bose’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends testing other applications or stored content, which helps distinguish a source-specific problem from an earbud problem.

Soundcore’s three-month interval is specific to AeroClip, not a universal schedule for every model; its guidance also calls for cleaning when there is a significant volume drop. Check the instructions for your own earbuds before cleaning, especially around ports and other openings.
Check the phone and earbud volume settings
Confirm playback is active and check the volume controls available on both the phone and earbuds; some models and devices expose separate controls. If your device has a left-right audio balance setting or hearing-safety setting, make sure it is not reducing one side or limiting the output unexpectedly. Change one setting at a time and replay the same known-good content so the result is easy to interpret.
Also try a different application or stored track at the same level. If the difference disappears with another source, the original content or application may be responsible. If it follows the same earbud across sources, focus on its placement, sound outlet and connection. This comparison is a diagnostic step, not proof of a hardware fault.
Refresh Bluetooth if the sound cuts out or one side goes silent
If one side is intermittent, silent or unexpectedly quiet after the fit and cleaning checks, refresh the connection:
- Disconnect the earbuds from any second phone, tablet or computer they may also be using.
- Restart the phone and the earbuds, following the model’s instructions.
- If duplicate entries for the earbuds appear in the phone’s Bluetooth list, remove the duplicates where applicable.
- Pair the earbuds again and test both sides with the same track.
Raycon describes resetting as a way to clear saved connections and restore communication between both earbuds. Bose advises clearing the earbud device list and reconnecting. Reset and pairing procedures differ by model, so use the manufacturer’s steps rather than guessing a button sequence.

A fresh pairing is most useful when a side is silent, intermittent or unexpectedly quiet—not as a substitute for checking a speaker that is simply pointed away from the ear. Disconnecting a second device can also remove a competing connection as a variable. After reconnecting, test the same known-good content in the same position so the comparison is meaningful.
What is the fastest troubleshooting order?
Follow these checks from easiest to more involved. Stop when the original problem is resolved; changing several variables at once makes it harder to tell what helped.
- Correct orientation: confirm L/R placement and put the speaker in front, facing the canal.
- Adjust position: move the earbud slightly up, down, forward or back while audio plays. Treat any angle in the manual as a model-specific starting point.
- Improve retention: try the supplied grip or intended adjustment, and wipe sweat from the ear and earbud.
- Clear the sound path: inspect and gently clean the speaker mesh and ports according to the manufacturer.
- Check playback and controls: test another application or track, confirm playback and check the phone and earbud volumes, plus balance or hearing-safety settings where available.
- Refresh the connection: disconnect other paired devices, restart, clear duplicate Bluetooth entries if applicable, and pair again using the model’s instructions.
- Contact support if the fault persists: use the manufacturer’s support or warranty process if one side remains substantially quieter after the preceding checks.
Keep a simple note of what changes the symptom: whether both sides are affected, whether the issue occurs with multiple sources, whether repositioning changes it, and whether it happens only in a noisy place or during exercise. This avoids repeating steps and gives support a clearer description if the problem persists. Do not jump straight to a reset for a fit issue, or assume a volume increase will solve a blocked port or poor alignment.

Clip-on open-ear earbuds make sense when awareness of your surroundings, comfort and avoiding an in-canal seal matter more than isolation. They are a weaker match if you need deep bass, strong isolation or consistent audibility in noisy places.
Before switching, decide which tradeoff is causing the problem. For retention, compare clip, C-bridge and ear-hook shapes, and whether the design offers adjustable or model-specific grips. For sound, consider how near the speaker can sit to your canal and whether an open-air design gives you enough isolation. If sweat or vigorous movement is the main issue, check the manufacturer’s exercise-fit and cleanup instructions. Soundcore specifically points readers seeking stronger bass, isolation or use in noisy settings toward in-ear or noise-canceling headphones.
If you prefer open-ear listening but one shape will not stay in place, a different retention geometry is a more credible next step than expecting a generic tip or adhesive to correct a mismatch. Check compatibility before buying ear grips: Soundcore documents M and L grips for AeroClip, but that does not establish that those grips—or other generic accessories—fit a different model.
Use the decision as a comparison, not a promise that one category is best for everyone. A clip, C-bridge or hook changes how the device contacts the outer ear; an in-ear tip changes the listening experience by creating a seal, while noise-canceling headphones are another option when isolation is the priority. Think about the setting as well as fit: an open pair may suit awareness and comfort, but a noisy gym or commute may expose its limits. If no open-ear shape sits securely or sounds clear enough for your use, choosing a more isolating design may be more practical than continuing to adjust the same pair.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do clip-on earbuds go inside the ear canal?
No. The speaker should face toward the canal and sit close enough to direct sound, but a clip-on design rests on the outer ear rather than forming an in-canal seal. Follow the positioning illustration for your exact model.

Can I use generic ear grips or adhesive to stop clip-on earbuds slipping?
Do not assume a generic grip will fit: the documented M and L grips are specific to Soundcore AeroClip, not proof of universal compatibility. Adhesive is not an established fix for a mismatch between the ear’s shape and the earbud’s contact points.
Why does the sound seem clearer when I move the speaker closer?
Moving the outlet closer and directing it toward the canal can make the audio easier to hear because less of it is aimed away from the ear. That does not create the seal of an in-ear earbud, so it will not remove the open-air design’s ambient-noise tradeoff.
Why do my clip-on earbuds sound quieter outside or at the gym?
Open-ear earbuds do not seal the canal, so steady background sound can compete with what you are listening to. Correct the speaker angle and position first; if you still need strong isolation or consistent audibility in noisy places, an in-ear or noise-canceling design may suit that use better.
Recommended Free Tools
Do clip-on earbuds need to point toward the ear canal?
Yes. The acoustic element should face toward the canal and sit close to it without being inserted. The exact angle and contact points depend on the model, so use its fit instructions rather than treating another brand’s angle as universal.
What should I do if one side is still quieter after cleaning and pairing again?
Confirm fit, test another application or track, check phone and earbud volume and balance settings, and pair again using the manufacturer’s instructions. If one side remains substantially quieter, contact the manufacturer about support or warranty service; Xiaomi directs users to after-sales service when hardware malfunction is suspected.
How often should I clean clip-on earbud mesh?
Soundcore advises cleaning AeroClip mesh every three months or when there is a significant volume drop. That interval is model-specific; check your own manufacturer’s instructions and use its recommended cleaning method.
The Bottom Line
Start with correct left/right placement and aim the speaker toward the canal, then adjust the clip in small increments while listening. Clean the mesh and ports, check device volume and balance, and refresh Bluetooth only if the sound remains intermittent or uneven. Some lighter bass, ambient noise and leakage are normal for open-ear earbuds. If a clean, correctly positioned pair still slips or cannot be heard comfortably in your usual setting, the honest fix may be a different fit geometry or a more isolating design.
