Stocks offer greater potential for long-term growth but can fall sharply; bonds can provide interest income and may be less volatile, but they can also lose value or default. Choose an allocation around the goal, the date you need the money, and your ability and willingness to absorb losses—not around the latest market move.
What you own when you buy stocks or bonds
A stock is an ownership interest in a company. Its value can rise if the company and market do well, but company-specific problems or broader market declines can reduce its price. Selling for less than you paid realizes a loss. The SEC’s stock FAQs explain the basics.
A bond is a loan to a government, municipality, or company. The issuer generally promises interest payments and repayment of principal at maturity, but those payments depend on the issuer meeting its obligations. A bond’s market price can also change before maturity. The SEC’s bond FAQs describe these features and risks.
How stocks and bonds differ in volatile markets
| Decision point | Stocks | Bonds |
|---|---|---|
| Typical portfolio role | Potential long-term capital growth | Interest income and potential diversification from stocks |
| Price behavior | Prices can fluctuate sharply, including in the short term. | Often less volatile than stocks, but market prices can fall, including when interest rates change. |
| Key risks | Market declines and company-specific losses | Interest-rate, credit/default, and liquidity risks; high-yield bonds have greater credit risk. |
| Important timing issue | A longer horizon may make volatility easier to withstand, but does not prevent a loss. | Match maturity to when funds may be needed; selling before maturity can expose you to price changes. |
Bonds are not risk-free, and they do not reliably rise whenever stocks fall. Holding both can spread risk, but diversification does not eliminate losses or guarantee that one investment will offset another. The outcome depends on what the investments hold and how markets behave.

How to choose a mix for your situation
1. Start with the goal and date
Write down what the money is for and when you expect to need it. That period is your time horizon. A shorter horizon generally leaves less time to recover from a market decline, so it may favor less exposure to volatile investments. A distant goal can make short-term swings more tolerable, though losses remain possible. The SEC’s asset-allocation guidance frames the decision around individual goals and circumstances.
2. Consider both capacity and willingness to lose money
Risk tolerance is not just how comfortable you feel watching prices move. Consider whether your finances could withstand a loss without derailing the goal, as well as whether you could stay with the plan during a downturn. Investor.gov defines the relevant choice in terms of personal risk tolerance and investing timeframe; its March 31, 2026 Investor.gov tips bulletin says, “The best mix for you depends on your personal risk tolerance and investing timeframe.”

3. Diversify across and within asset classes
Rather than betting the whole portfolio on one company, issuer, or asset class, spread investments across different holdings. A stock or bond fund can make it easier to own multiple securities, but the label “fund” does not guarantee broad diversification: a narrowly focused fund may hold investments with similar risks. Check the holdings and how concentrated they are. Diversification is a way to manage risk, not protection against all losses. See the SEC’s beginner’s guide to asset allocation, diversification, and rebalancing.
4. Look beyond a bond’s yield
Before buying an individual bond or bond fund, consider the issuer, credit quality, maturity, sensitivity to interest-rate changes, liquidity, and costs. A higher yield can reflect higher credit risk, not a free increase in return. High-yield bonds carry materially greater credit risk. Selling a bond before maturity may mean accepting a market price below what you paid. 5. Choose implementation with the same care
You can invest through individual shares or bonds, or through stock and bond funds or exchange-traded funds. Compare holdings, diversification, fees, and liquidity rather than assuming one format is automatically safer or more suitable. A fund’s name alone does not tell you whether it is broadly diversified.
What to do during a bout of volatility
Do not let recent performance make the allocation decision
Changing from stocks to bonds—or the reverse—because one has recently outperformed is a market-timing decision. SEC and partner organizations’ World Investor Week 2026 bulletin cautions against chasing returns and trying to time the market. It describes periodic investing as one approach that can help manage short-term swings; it does not guarantee a profit or prevent losses.

Rebalance to a deliberate plan
Market moves can leave a portfolio’s stock-and-bond proportions different from the mix you chose. Rebalancing means bringing them back toward that intended allocation, rather than changing the target simply because one asset class has risen or fallen. Decide in advance when or how you will review the mix. Investor.gov explains rebalancing in its beginner’s guide.
