The right stock-photo buying model depends on how many assets you will actually license, how predictable that need is, and what you intend to do with each image. Subscriptions can suit steady monthly use; credit packs or on-demand purchases can be safer for occasional needs. Before paying, compare expiry and cancellation terms, seats, and the license for the exact asset—not just the advertised per-image price.
Choose a buying model by actual usage
Estimate the number of usable assets you expect to license in a typical month, then compare that with the plan’s allowance and the rights you need. A subscription’s apparent low cost per download can be misleading if unused downloads expire or if a resale use requires a more expensive license. Providers themselves describe subscriptions as suited to ongoing needs: Adobe Stock says, “Subscriptions are best if you have ongoing stock content needs.” That is provider guidance, not a guarantee that a subscription is the best value for every buyer.
- Regular, predictable use: A subscription may fit if you consistently use most of its allowance and accept its billing and cancellation terms.
- Occasional or uneven use: Credit packs or on-demand packs may avoid paying for an unused monthly allowance, but check their expiry dates and the rights they buy.
- Unusual use cases: If an image will appear on merchandise, in a resale product, or in a high-volume print run, establish the required license before choosing a plan.
There is no reliable like-for-like price comparison here across Adobe Stock, Shutterstock, Getty Images, and iStock: price, currency, promotions, allotment, content type, and license vary by region and may change. Compare live offers for your location and billing term rather than ranking services by a headline per-image figure.
How subscriptions, credits, and on-demand packs differ

These terms are provider-specific and can change. Adobe distinguishes subscription credits from pack credits; do not assume they combine. Shutterstock says most subscription allowances reset each month, but check the specific plan. A seemingly generous annual plan can also create a cancellation cost: Shutterstock’s FAQ describes a fee generally equal to 50% of remaining subscription cost for annual subscriptions billed monthly, subject to local law. Confirm the amount and applicable rules in the current checkout and terms before committing.

Match the license to the image’s intended use
Buying access to a catalog or receiving a download does not by itself establish that an image can be used in every format. Read the license attached to the specific asset and plan, and check restrictions before publication.
Adobe Stock
Adobe says its Standard license permits perpetual use, has a 500,000-print-run ceiling, and does not allow use in items made for resale. Its plans page says an Extended license is needed for large runs or resale. Its comparison page describes both as perpetual and worldwide, while other restrictions may apply. It also reports a catalog of 625,000,000+ assets as of June 30, 2026; that is Shutterstock’s own catalog figure, not an independent measure of unique or relevant photographs. Getty distinguishes royalty-free content from rights-managed or rights-ready content. Royalty-free generally means one license fee without additional royalties for reuse; it does not mean the image is free of charge. Getty’s UK-hosted agreement, last updated April 2026, describes royalty-free rights as worldwide, unlimited, and perpetual. Check who can use the account and files
An individual account and a team plan are not interchangeable. Shutterstock says individual accounts cover one user and describes team subscriptions separately. Adobe’s plans page directs team buyers to pooled or team options; its stated individual and Creative Cloud team guidance should not be generalized to enterprise buyers, who have separate terms.
- Confirm who is allowed to license and download assets under the chosen plan.
- Check whether colleagues or a client may use the licensed file, and whether client handoff is permitted.
- For team or enterprise use, verify account administration and the applicable team or enterprise agreement.
- Keep the license history and the asset’s restrictions with the project record.

A practical comparison before checkout
- List likely downloads: Estimate monthly use and identify the file types and collections you need. Check whether those assets are included in the plan or require a different purchase.
- Calculate usable value: Compare the cost with assets you expect to license and use, not the full allowance if some downloads will go unused.
- Read the commitment terms: Check billing period, auto-renewal, cancellation fees, and what happens if you cancel or downgrade.
- Check balance rules: Confirm monthly resets, expiry, rollover, and whether subscription credits and pack credits remain separate.
- Define the use: Note audience, format, print quantity, territory, duration, editorial or commercial purpose, and whether the image is incorporated into something sold or distributed.
- Verify the rights and users: Match those needs to the asset’s specific license; confirm seats, team access, and client transfer rights.
- Save the record: Retain the license history and relevant asset or order details in case the project’s use is questioned later.
