SteamOS is usually the better choice if you want to play games from your Steam library on a handheld; Android is usually better if the games you want are native Android titles. Neither platform is automatically faster or better overall. Check compatibility and controller support for the games you actually play, then compare the specific devices you are considering.

Choose SteamOS if your games are on Steam
Steam Deck OLED runs SteamOS 3, an Arch-based operating system, and is a portable gaming PC with integrated controls. If your priority is taking an existing Steam library on the go, SteamOS is the more direct fit. Valve’s Deck Verified ratings help you check how individual games play on Steam Deck.
Those ratings are useful signals, not an unconditional promise that every PC game will work perfectly. Valve’s review criteria include factors such as supported display resolution, sensible default settings, and legible text. The review process continues as games and software change, so check the current rating for each game you care about.
What to check before buying
- Look up your must-play games in Deck Verified and read the rating details.
- Check whether a game depends on a launcher, anti-cheat system, or other feature that may affect compatibility.
- Plan for occasional per-game configuration: Valve’s Steam Support guide describes Proton compatibility steps and troubleshooting.
- Consider storage needs. Valve says Steam Deck models support microSD expansion; confirm card compatibility and capacity needs for your own library.
Proton and compatibility settings can make some Windows games playable, but they do not make every Steam listing a guarantee of seamless handheld play. Steam Support says some guidance may apply to third-party AMD devices compatible with SteamOS; for other devices, it advises contacting the manufacturer for detailed support. Valve’s compatibility review documentation also describes device-specific compatibility information.

Choose Android if you want native Android games
Android is the more natural choice when the games you want are made for Android, or when you value the wider range of Android device types. That range includes phones, tablets, TVs, and other form factors, but the experience and game availability are not identical across them.

Android’s controller support does not mean every Android game has a console-style interface. Google’s developer documentation says Android has supported a wide array of game controllers since API level 9 (Android 2.3 Gingerbread), while also advising developers to implement and test controller behavior across devices. In practice, confirm gamepad support for each title before choosing an Android handheld.
Check the whole controller experience
- Verify that the game supports a controller, not just touch controls.
- Check whether menus, tutorials, and onboarding can be completed with the controller.
- Look for game-specific notes or testing information for the device you plan to use.
Google’s guidance recommends testing controller use beyond gameplay, including menus and tutorials. Its resources on supporting game controllers, testing controller support, and natural input across form factors explain why support can differ by game and device.

How to decide between them
- List the games you actually want to play. Identify which are Steam/PC games and which are native Android games.
- Check compatibility title by title. For Steam games, review the current Deck Verified information; for Android games, confirm gamepad support and device compatibility.
- Compare the exact devices. Consider controls and ergonomics, screen, storage, battery/runtime, and price. These vary by model, and a platform-level comparison cannot establish a performance winner.
- Pick the platform that matches your priority library. Choose SteamOS for a Steam-centered handheld experience; choose Android when native Android games are the priority and their controller behavior checks out.
If you want both ecosystems, prioritize the games you play most rather than assuming one handheld will deliver the same experience across both. Verify the exact model and titles before buying.
