It is Valve’s direct Android route to Steam Remote Play and involves a simple app-and-PC setup. Choose Moonlight with Sunshine if you want to stream non-Steam games, other apps, or your full desktop, or if you need a host option documented for GPUs beyond NVIDIA. Neither service is established as universally faster or better-looking: test the one that fits your use case on your own Android device and network.
How Steam Remote Play and Moonlight differ
Steam Remote Play streams from a PC running Steam to the Steam Link app on Android. Moonlight is an Android streaming client that connects to host software installed on your PC. For a new Moonlight setup, Sunshine is the more future-ready documented host: Moonlight says NVIDIA GeForce Experience is out of support and is not receiving new feature work.

These are setup and compatibility distinctions, not a performance ranking. Valve describes Remote Play as real-time video encoding over a custom low-latency network protocol, but that is not a head-to-head Android benchmark. The reviewed official sources do not establish a universal winner for latency, image quality, or reliability.
Setting up Steam Link on Android
Valve lists Steam Link for Android phones, tablets, and TVs running Android 5.0 or newer. Its support instructions call for a PC running Steam and a 5 GHz wireless router. To connect:

- Run Steam and sign in on the PC that will host the game.
- Connect the Android device to the same network as the PC.
- Install Steam Link on Android and follow the app’s prompts to find and pair with the PC.
- Start a Steam game from the app and check that your controls work as expected.
Valve lists the Steam Controller, Xbox One S controller, DualShock 4 on Android 9.0 or newer, Razer Kishi, and Raiju Mobile among supported controllers. Other input devices may work, but Valve does not officially support every device. Steamworks also allows game developers to create and tune recommended touch layouts for phones and tablets, so touch-control quality can vary from one Steam game to another.
Setting up Moonlight with Sunshine
Moonlight’s Android listing says the client can stream games, programs, or the full desktop from a PC over a local network or the internet. Its setup guide lists Android 4.1 or newer for the client and recommends a capable device for smooth hardware video decoding. Check the current app listing for up-to-date compatibility details.

- Install Sunshine on the PC you want to use as the host.
- Complete Sunshine’s first-time setup in its web interface.
- Open Moonlight on Android, connect to the PC, and pair using the PIN displayed by Sunshine.
- Select Steam or Desktop, which Sunshine includes by default, or add a game or app in Sunshine and launch it through Moonlight.
Moonlight’s Android listing describes Sunshine as supporting all GPUs and GeForce Experience as NVIDIA-only. Moonlight says GeForce Experience is out of support from NVIDIA and is not receiving new feature work, so Sunshine is the documented choice to build a new setup around.
Network setup and performance expectations
Both services depend on the PC, Android device, router, and wireless conditions. Valve calls for a 5 GHz wireless router for Steam Link. Moonlight recommends a mid- to high-end wireless router, connecting Android over 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and wiring the PC to the router with Ethernet. These are recommendations, not promises of a particular response time or image quality.

Moonlight notes that streaming performance can vary with the client device and network setup. Since the reviewed official sources do not provide a controlled, current Android comparison using the same host, game, phone, network, and measurement method, the practical way to choose is to try the option that matches your library and compare it on your own setup.
Android controllers and touch controls
Steam and Moonlight both support Android gamepad use, but support depends on the particular controller and phone. Moonlight supports standard Android-mapped gamepads and documents Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series controller families. It warns that some combinations can have connection or latency problems, particularly PlayStation controllers over Bluetooth.

- Check your phone maker’s controller compatibility information before buying an accessory.
- Pair the controller and test button mapping in the games you plan to play.
- A telescopic or other phone gaming controller is optional; fit and behavior vary by phone and controller.
For Steam games, developers can provide touch layouts, but there is no guarantee that every title has a layout suited to your phone or preferred controls.

Moonlight’s FAQ says internet streaming works for many ISPs and often uses the project’s Internet Hosting Tool. However, waking the host PC remotely is not always possible. Moonlight recommends leaving the PC awake if you plan to connect while away. The sources reviewed do not establish an equivalent remote-access comparison for Steam Link.

HDR on Android: check every part of the setup
Moonlight labels HDR10 streaming beta in its setup guide and lists requirements that include an HDR10-capable client, a GPU able to encode HEVC Main 10, and an HDR10-enabled game. If the game uses the operating system’s HDR mode, Moonlight also requires an HDR display connected to the host PC. Its guide lists known issues, so HDR should not be treated as automatic or universally supported on Android. The reviewed official Steam sources do not establish a comparable Android HDR feature set.
