Steam’s new Pyrowave controls tune automatic bitrate calculation; they do not make 125–300 Mbit/s a universal requirement. That range comes from codec author Hans-Kristian Arntzen’s own evaluation: it estimates roughly 125 Mbit/s at 720p and 300 Mbit/s at 4K for a particular viewing distance and image-quality target. Valve’s October 1, 2026 beta notes add @PyrowavePSNR and @PyrowaveHeightFactor for adjusting the calculation, and raise the manual bitrate ceiling to 1 Gbit/s.

What the 125–300 Mbit/s estimate measures

Arntzen’s objective bitrate evaluation puts the curve at about 125 Mbit/s for 720p and 300 Mbit/s for 4K at H=2, with a target around 35 dB PSNR-HVS-M-H. The author says that quality curve tracks his default “good quality” assessment. The evaluation page does not state a publication year.

H is viewing distance divided by the height of the active video picture. It matters because a picture viewed farther away can tolerate more compression without the same visible loss. Under the H=2 setup, the estimated bitrate curve flattens near 300 Mbit/s around 1440p; the 4K estimate is not a claim that every increase in resolution requires a matching increase in bitrate. At H=1, where the viewer sits closer relative to picture height, the author says substantially higher rates may be needed.

These are results from an objective quality sweep, not a blanket network requirement, a measurement of typical live gameplay, or a promised Steam setting. The metric focuses on luminance error and does not quantify the color-detail benefit of 4:4:4.

How the evaluation was conducted—and where it stops

The sweep used challenging lossless 4K 4:4:4 clips from Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, Expedition 33, The Witcher 3, and Street Fighter 6. It tested 16:9 resolutions from 720p to 4K, both 4:2:0 and 4:4:4 chroma, 16 viewing distances, and a broad range of bitrates. Because the calculations were expensive, it sampled about ten representative frames per game.

  • Aspect ratio: The evaluation did not test 21:9 or 32:9 ultrawide video.
  • Sample size: A small set of frames from four game clips cannot represent every scene or all gameplay motion.
  • Metric: The reported objective measure tracks luminance rather than chroma errors, so it cannot establish the full visual value of 4:4:4.
  • Motion: The author notes that one HEVC comparison clip had unusually low motion complexity.

Those boundaries matter when applying the curve to a different game, display, aspect ratio, viewing distance, or codec comparison.

What Steam’s new Pyrowave controls change

Valve’s September 21, 2026 announcement describes Pyrowave as a high-bandwidth, low-latency option for Steam Remote Play. It uses GPU encoding and decoding and is not enabled by default. Steam directs users to Remote Play’s advanced client settings, where the announcement describes automatic quality tuning, a quality slider, and manual bitrate control.

A secondary transcription of Steam’s October 1, 2026 beta notes says Valve improved automatic Pyrowave bitrate calculation and added @PyrowavePSNR and @PyrowaveHeightFactor to tune it. The notes also raise the manual bitrate ceiling to 1 Gbit/s and reset Pyrowave bitrate to the automatic default. That ceiling is an available manual limit, not a recommended target. The notes also list fixes for gradually increasing video latency on slow network links and reduced audio dropouts. Because the notes are reproduced by a third party, consult Steam’s current client notes for exact wording or the latest live behavior.

Launch availability was described as beta on macOS and Windows, with Linux requiring the experimental SteamRT3 client; Steam Link mobile support was described as forthcoming. Those are launch-time details, not confirmation of current platform availability.

Why 4:4:4 and higher bitrate are trade-offs

Pyrowave supports optional 4:4:4 chroma for more precise color information. Valve says it takes more bandwidth and processing and is off by default. In Arntzen’s evaluation, 4:4:4 required about 15–20% more bitrate to reach the same luminance quality as 4:2:0. That figure reflects the evaluation’s conditions, and its luminance-focused metric does not measure the chroma improvement itself.

Steam characterizes Pyrowave as using 5–10 times the bandwidth of other streaming codecs. That is Valve’s broad description, not a controlled head-to-head result across codecs, games, networks, and devices. Steam recommends wired Gigabit Ethernet because Pyrowave can consume substantially more bandwidth than other streaming codecs. A Cat 6 cable is one possible way to make a wired connection, not a stated requirement; a Gigabit switch is only relevant if you need additional wired ports.

Does Pyrowave mean lower end-to-end latency?

Not necessarily. Valve explains that stream latency includes encoding, network transfer, decoding, and display: “The total latency of your video stream is the time for encode + network + decode + display.” A codec may reduce one component while a congested or slow link, client decoding, or display adds time elsewhere. Steam says a particular setup “may or may not benefit” because total latency combines codec and network latency.

Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle
  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

Use Steam’s performance graph to inspect the stream on your own setup. The graph can help show total latency, but codec choice alone cannot establish that the complete path is faster. There is no systematic, independently controlled real-world comparison established here against HEVC, AV1, or other streaming applications.

How to decide whether to try Pyrowave

  • Check the link first: A wired Gigabit Ethernet path matches Steam’s recommendation. Check the host-to-router and router-to-client links before buying new hardware.
  • Start with automatic bitrate: Valve’s October beta notes report a reset to the automatic default and new tuning convars. Use the automatic setting as a starting point rather than treating the author’s curve as a target for every game.
  • Watch latency and stability: Use the performance graph while streaming. If latency rises or the stream stutters, reduce the bitrate or address network limits instead of assuming a higher number improves the experience.
  • Consider viewing distance and picture format: The author’s estimates depend on H, resolution, and chroma mode; they do not cover ultrawide formats.
  • Raise manual bitrate only when useful: The beta notes’ 1 Gbit/s ceiling permits a high manual value, but Steam warns that more bandwidth increases latency. A ceiling is not a quality or latency guarantee.
