Steam Playtest is a way to try a test build; Steam Early Access is a purchase of a playable game that is still being developed. A Playtest may be limited or switched off by its developer. With Early Access, judge the game by what it offers now and its current price—not by features or dates that may never materialize.

What to expect from a Steam Playtest
A Playtest is attached to the main game through a separate child app ID. Its signup appears on the main game’s Steam store page, rather than on a separate Playtest store page. You can request access while still wishlisting or following the game.
Access is at the developer’s discretion. The developer can limit how many players get in, and can deactivate the Playtest. A signup or invitation is therefore not a promise of permanent access, nor does participation guarantee the full game later.

Steam presents Playtest as a free, low-risk way for developers to gather playtesting data. That describes the feature, not a guarantee that every individual test is open to every player or that a particular build will be available indefinitely. Steam also says Playtest participants are not under nondisclosure agreements by default; don’t assume that what you see is confidential.
What buying an Early Access game means
Early Access is a purchase of an unfinished product that should already be playable and worth its current price. It is not a pre-purchase, crowdfunding campaign, or payment for a promise that the game will eventually be delivered. Valve’s guidance is direct: “Customers should be buying your game based on its current state, not on promises of a future that may or may not be realized.”

The store page and developer questionnaire are meant to explain what the current version contains and what remains in development. Read them as a description of the product you can buy today. Planned additions, completion dates, and other future events can change; do not treat them as commitments. The Steam store review process describes the information developers are expected to provide.
Steam’s Early Access guidance says a title should remain available and playable as development continues. It should not be taken down and returned to Coming Soon. For developers who want a temporary test they can later remove, Steam recommends Playtest instead.

How to decide whether to join or buy
Before joining a Playtest
- Check whether signups are open and whether the page indicates that access is limited.
- Think of participation as trying a test build and, where appropriate, giving feedback—not as a guaranteed way to obtain the full game.
- Expect that the developer may later deactivate the Playtest.
Before buying Early Access
- Read the developer’s questionnaire and the current store description.
- Identify what is playable now, what is missing, and any disclosed limitations or updates that could affect saves.
- Look for how the developer plans to receive feedback.
- Decide whether the present build is worth the listed price to you without relying on a promised feature or completion date.
Steam’s Early Access guidance emphasizes clear information about the current product and cautions developers against specific promises about uncertain future events.

Steam Advance Access is a pre-purchase benefit that lets some customers play before a broader release. It is not the unfinished-product label used for Steam Early Access. Valve explicitly distinguishes the two in its Advance Access documentation. A launch-day head start and buying a game still in development are different arrangements, even when other platforms use similar terminology.
