Valve’s March 21, 2018 Steam client notes record a fix for an issue in which the in-game overlay could crash or become unresponsive in some Vulkan-based games. The note confirms the defect and a fix, but it does not identify a beta build, affected games, operating system, graphics card, or driver.
What Valve’s March 2018 note confirms
Valve’s Steam Client update archive lists this fix under the March 21, 2018 update: “Fixed an issue where the in-game overlay could crash or become unresponsive in some Vulkan-based games”. The wording matters: it describes an issue affecting some Vulkan-based games, not all Vulkan games.
Although the topic is often framed as a Steam beta problem, the cited entry does not name a beta branch or build. It also does not say which games or configurations were affected, how often the issue occurred, or what caused it. The evidence supports saying Valve recorded and fixed an overlay problem; it does not support assigning the defect to a specific beta release or setup.
Why Vulkan appears in the release note
Vulkan is a graphics API used by games to communicate with graphics hardware. Steam’s overlay is a client feature that appears over a running game. In its March 8, 2016 client update, Valve announced that it had “Added Steam Overlay support for games using the Vulkan graphics API”. The 2018 entry therefore documents a compatibility issue in a feature Valve had previously extended to Vulkan games.

How the 2018 issue differs from Valve’s later Vulkan fixes
Valve’s July 27, 2022 Steam Client update notes describe other Vulkan-related fixes: the overlay not working with Vulkan 1.3 applications, and crashes in Vulkan games using VK_EXT_graphics_pipeline_library.
| Date | Release-note description | What the note establishes |
|---|---|---|
| March 21, 2018 | Overlay could crash or become unresponsive in some Vulkan-based games. | Valve recorded a fix for the described issue; no beta build, game, platform, GPU, or driver is named. |
| July 27, 2022 | Overlay not working with Vulkan 1.3 applications; crashes in Vulkan games using VK_EXT_graphics_pipeline_library. | Valve recorded later, separately worded Vulkan fixes. The notes do not establish that these shared a cause with the 2018 issue. |
These entries should be treated as distinct release-note records. Their wording and dates do not establish that the later problems were a recurrence of the 2018 defect or that they had the same root cause.

What this means for Steam users now
The 2018 note is historical evidence, not proof that the current Steam client still has this issue or that it affects a particular modern game or computer. It gives no affected-game list, crash rate, or troubleshooting instructions. For present-day compatibility, check Valve’s current Steam client notes rather than inferring current behavior from a fix recorded in 2018.
