PS5 and Xbox Series X/S are dedicated consoles with different games, hardware options, and disc policies; Mac mini is a general-purpose Mac that can also play games. The right choice depends less on a headline spec than on the games you want, whether you need a computer for other work, and how you feel about digital libraries, discs, and operating systems.
How the four devices differ
These products overlap in gaming, but they are built around different jobs. Valve’s Steam Machine puts a PC-style Steam library and SteamOS in a living-room form. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S offer console-focused experiences within their respective ecosystems. Mac mini runs macOS and is intended for everyday computing and professional workloads as well as supported games.
There is no controlled, same-game, same-settings benchmark in the available evidence that ranks all four. Component counts and manufacturers’ performance claims cannot establish which device runs a particular game best.
| Device | What it is | Storage and disc options in the cited information | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|---|
| Valve Steam Machine | Compact SteamOS gaming PC | 512GB or 2TB SSD configurations reported by Windows Central; microSD expansion also reported. No optical disc drive is identified in that coverage. | Steam library access, Proton compatibility, and comfort with a Linux-based system. |
| PlayStation 5 | Sony console family | Sony lists a 1TB model with a disc drive and an 825GB digital model. A separately sold drive is compatible with specified slim digital model groups. | Which PS5 model and games you want, and whether you need physical-disc support. |
| Xbox Series X | Microsoft console family’s higher-capability model | Microsoft lists 1TB and 2TB variants, including disc and digital/storage configurations. | Series X’s stated 4K capabilities, its game ecosystem, and the model’s storage and disc configuration. |
| Xbox Series S | Disc-free, lower-spec Xbox console | Microsoft lists 512GB or 1TB configurations. Storage expansion cards use a dedicated port. | Its 1440p design target and digital-only game access, rather than Series X specifications. |
| Mac mini | Compact general-purpose macOS desktop | Apple’s August 25, 2026 announcement covers M6 and M5 Pro models; the cited announcement does not establish a disc-drive option. | Whether macOS apps and work tasks matter as much as gaming, plus the games’ Mac support. |
What is the Steam Machine, and how does its hardware compare?
Valve describes SteamOS as a Linux-based operating system optimized for gaming, with Steam features and a desktop mode that allows users to install other software and launchers. Proton helps run many Windows games on Linux, but compatibility is title-specific; not every Steam game is guaranteed to work as expected.

Reported Steam Machine specifications
Windows Central’s launch coverage reports a six-core, 12-thread Zen 4 CPU; RDNA 3 graphics with 28 compute units; 16GB of DDR5 memory plus 8GB of GDDR6 graphics memory; and 512GB or 2TB SSD options. The same report lists microSD expansion, HDMI 2.0, and DisplayPort 1.4. These are reported specifications, not a benchmark against the consoles or Mac mini.
Windows Central also relayed Valve’s claim that the Steam Machine is “over 6x more powerful than Steam Deck.” That is Valve’s comparison as reported by the outlet, not an independently established result or a direct comparison with PS5 or Xbox.
Valve’s SteamOS page has said that more than 18,000 titles had been checked for compatibility “last we checked.” The page does not specify a year for that count, so it should be treated as a dated Valve figure rather than a current total or a promise that every listed game runs perfectly.

Steam Machine price reports
Rock, Paper, Shotgun reported on June 22, 2026 that U.S. prices were $1,049 for the 512GB configuration and $1,349 for the 2TB configuration; it also reported £879 and €1,039 for the base configuration. Those are outlet-reported figures from that date, not verified current prices or a guarantee of present availability. The report also described randomized reservations.
How do PS5 and Xbox Series X/S compare?
PS5 and Xbox are more directly comparable as dedicated consoles than either is to a Mac mini or a SteamOS PC. Even within the Xbox family, however, Series X and Series S should not be treated as equivalent configurations.
PS5: disc model or digital model
Sony’s product information lists a 1TB PS5 with a disc drive and an 825GB digital model. For specified slim PS5 Digital Edition model groups, Sony says a separately sold disc drive can be added; internet access is required to pair it during setup. Check the exact model group before buying the drive, because the option is not described as fitting every digital PS5.
Rank #3
- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
Xbox Series X: 4K-capable console configurations
Microsoft lists 1TB and 2TB Series X variants and describes the console as capable of native 4K gaming and up to 120 frames per second, with HDMI 2.1. These are platform capabilities, not results every game will achieve; actual resolution and frame rate depend on the game and its settings. Microsoft also offers disc and digital/storage configurations, so check the exact variant rather than assuming every Series X has the same drive or capacity.
Xbox Series S: digital-only and designed for 1440p
Series S has no disc drive. Microsoft describes it as designed for 1440p gaming with the ability to upscale to 4K, and lists 512GB and 1TB configurations. Those are Series S details, not Series X specifications. Both Xbox Series X and Series S support the Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card through a dedicated port; Microsoft says the card replicates the custom SSD experience.

Where does Mac mini fit in a gaming comparison?
Mac mini is the clearest choice of the four if you need a compact desktop for macOS work as well as gaming. Apple’s August 25, 2026 U.S. announcement says M6 models start at $899 and M5 Pro models at $1,699. Apple describes M6 with a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU, 16GB of unified memory at the starting configuration and options up to 32GB; M5 Pro offers up to an 18-core CPU, 20-core GPU, and 64GB of unified memory.

- CPU: x86-64-AMD Ryzen Zen 8 Cores / 16 Threads at 3.5GHz.GPU: AMD Radeon RDNA 2-based graphics engine.
- 16GB GDDR6/256-bit Memory; 825GB SSD Storage Capacity
- Ethernet (10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T), IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax, Bluetooth 5.1
- HDR technology, 8K output,4K TV gaming, Up to 120 fps with 120Hz output, Tempest 3D AudioTech
- What's Included: Sony PlayStation 5 Digital Edition; DualSense; USB cable, HDMI cable.
Those configurations support a broader computing role than a dedicated console, but gaming depends on whether the titles you care about support macOS. Apple reports up to 2x faster gaming performance with ray tracing in Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition on the announced Mac mini compared with Mac mini with M4. This is Apple’s comparison between Mac generations in one named game—not evidence that Mac mini is twice as fast as a PS5, Xbox, or Steam Machine.
Apple chief hardware officer Johny Srouji described Mac mini as “our most versatile Mac,” citing home-computer, professional-studio, and always-on uses. That positioning is useful when evaluating it as a computer purchase; it does not make it a like-for-like console.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you choose?
Choose Steam Machine if your library and setup fit SteamOS
- Most of the games you want are on Steam, and you are willing to check individual SteamOS or Proton compatibility.
- You want a living-room device that retains some PC flexibility through desktop mode and software installation.
- You are comfortable with the reported price and will confirm current order status and regional terms before buying.
Choose PS5 if its games and disc option suit you
- The PlayStation games you want are the deciding factor.
- You want a dedicated console and prefer a disc-drive PS5, or have confirmed that the separately sold drive works with your specific slim digital model.
Choose Xbox Series X or Series S based on the actual configuration
- Consider Series X if its 4K-capable hardware and the available disc or digital configuration match your needs.
- Consider Series S if a disc-free console designed for 1440p fits your games and display, and you are comfortable buying games digitally.
- Compare the chosen model’s built-in capacity and the cost of compatible storage expansion rather than assuming the two Xbox models have the same performance or storage.
Choose Mac mini if you also need a Mac desktop
- You need macOS for work, creative tasks, or everyday computing, and the games you play are available for Mac.
- You value one computer for multiple tasks more than a console-focused library or a living-room gaming interface.
What the prices and performance figures can—and cannot—tell you
The available prices do not support a fair, current ranking across the four products. The Steam Machine figures above are outlet-reported June 2026 prices; Apple’s figures are U.S. starting prices announced in August 2026; the captured Sony and Microsoft product information did not provide a complete set of current prices. Regional pricing, configuration, and availability matter, so compare the exact models in your market before deciding.

Likewise, headline resolution claims, GPU compute-unit counts, and vendor comparisons are not substitutes for same-game tests. A meaningful performance comparison would need the same game, comparable settings, and clear reporting of native rendering versus upscaling. No such four-device test is established here. For a practical decision, start with your games and required software, then check model-specific storage, disc support, and current local pricing.
