Start with Steam Link if you want to stream games from your Steam library and your headset is supported. Choose Virtual Desktop if you also want a broader virtual-desktop tool or its headset support and game-launch options fit your setup better. Neither app is a proven universal winner for image quality or speed: the official sources cited here do not provide a controlled, current head-to-head benchmark.
Before choosing, check your exact headset model, where your PC VR games are sold, your PC’s capability, and whether your PC can connect to the router by Ethernet while the headset uses suitable Wi-Fi.
How Steam Link and Virtual Desktop differ

Which app should you use?
Choose Steam Link for a Steam-focused setup
Steam Link is the natural first option if your VR games are in Steam, your headset is supported, and you want a direct route to streaming your Steam library. Valve’s November 30, 2023 announcement called it free and described wireless play from a Steam library. Because headset support can change, verify your exact model in its current store listing rather than relying only on that 2023 Quest announcement.
Choose Virtual Desktop for its broader desktop role or listed headset support
Virtual Desktop may fit better if you want to access your PC desktop as well as stream PC VR, or if your headset appears on its published support list and not on Steam Link’s available listing. For PC VR, verify the individual game against the vendor’s compatibility information: support for a headset does not mean every game will work.

Do not choose based on a blanket performance claim
The official sources provide setup requirements and compatibility information, not a controlled comparison across matching headsets, PCs, routers, and games. A claim that one app is always faster or sharper would go beyond that evidence. Compare the same game on your own setup if you need to decide between them on image quality or latency.
Check your headset and game before installing
- Identify the exact headset model. Compare it with the app’s current store listing or vendor support page. Steam’s accessible 2023 announcement and Remote Play page name Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest Pro, while current Steam Support text names Meta, HTC Vive Focus, and PICO families. Virtual Desktop’s published list includes additional named models across Meta, Pico, HTC, Play for Dream MR, and Samsung Galaxy XR.
- Check where the game is sold. Steam Link is for Steam-library streaming. For Virtual Desktop, consult the vendor’s compatibility information for the precise title; the vendor cautions that not all games are compatible.
- Confirm PC support. Steam Link needs Steam and SteamVR on Windows 10 or newer under Valve’s stated baseline. Virtual Desktop’s PC VR game streaming requires a VR-ready Windows 10/11 PC; its general macOS support does not extend to SteamVR/Oculus Rift game streaming.
- Check current storefront details. App availability, supported headsets, versions, and prices can change. The vendor page reviewed showed Virtual Desktop standalone version 1.34.22 and classic version 1.34.10; these are page-listed versions at the time reviewed, not a claim that they remain current. Verify today’s listing before installing.
PC and router requirements
Steam Link: Valve’s stated baseline and recommendations
Valve’s 2023 announcement specifies Windows 10 or newer, Steam and SteamVR, NVIDIA GTX 970 or better, a wired connection from PC to router, and 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the headset. Valve recommends Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E, at least 16 GB RAM, and NVIDIA RTX 2070 or better. These figures describe Valve’s stated setup guidance; they do not guarantee a particular frame rate, latency, or image quality.

The Meta store listing separately specifies Steam and SteamVR, Windows 10+, GTX 970-or-better, 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5, and Quest 2/3/Pro as minimum requirements. It recommends an i5-4590/FX 8350 equivalent or better, 16 GB RAM, RTX 2070 or RX 6600 or better, Wi-Fi 6/6E, and a wired PC connection. Its headset list is Quest-specific, so do not use it as the complete current Steam Link compatibility list.
Virtual Desktop: PC VR streaming is Windows-specific
Virtual Desktop lists Windows 10 or 11 64-bit and macOS for general computer use, but states that SteamVR/Oculus Rift game streaming requires a VR-ready Windows 10/11 PC. Its stated graphics baseline is GTX 970, and its router guidance calls for the computer to be wired to a 5 GHz AC or AX router.

Why the wired PC connection matters
Both vendors’ guidance centers on a wired PC-to-router connection and a wireless headset connection. Ethernet is an optional way to connect the PC to the router if it is not already wired; buying a cable alone cannot guarantee better headset Wi-Fi or fix every streaming problem.
Troubleshoot Virtual Desktop connection problems
Virtual Desktop’s support guidance identifies several possible obstacles when the headset cannot find or connect to the PC:

- Make sure the headset and PC are on the same network.
- Avoid guest Wi-Fi that isolates devices from one another.
- Check whether a firewall is blocking the connection.
- Temporarily account for VPN software, which may interfere with local network discovery.
- Do not expect the setup to work reliably on public or shared Wi-Fi networks with device isolation or access restrictions.
These are possible causes, not a guarantee that any single change will solve a problem. If the connection works but a particular game does not, check that title in the vendor’s compatibility information.

- Headset: Is your exact model listed and the app currently available for it?
- Game library: Are you streaming Steam games, or do you need Virtual Desktop’s broader PC desktop role and a confirmed compatible game?
- PC: Does it meet the relevant Windows and hardware requirements for PC VR?
- Network: Can the PC connect to the router by Ethernet, with the headset on a suitable 5 GHz wireless network?
If Steam Link meets all four checks, it is the straightforward Steam-first option. If Virtual Desktop’s desktop features or published headset support better match your needs, use it after confirming the specific PC VR game and current price.
