Steam Link VR works with specific standalone headsets when a Windows PC running Steam and SteamVR streams games over the same local network. Valve’s minimum setup calls for a supported headset, Windows 10 or newer, a qualifying graphics card, and a 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5-or-newer router with the PC connected by Ethernet. Wi-Fi 6 or 6E and a more powerful GPU are recommendations, not minimum requirements.

Steam Link VR requirements at a glance

Component Valve’s minimum or requirement Valve’s recommendation or note
Host software Steam and SteamVR on the PC Restart Steam if needed to obtain current software, per Valve’s launch instructions.
Operating system Windows 10 or newer The current support FAQ does not name a newer Windows version as a requirement.
Graphics card NVIDIA GTX 970 or better, or AMD RX 570 or better NVIDIA RTX 2070 or better recommended. AMD RX 6400 and RX 6500 XT are excluded because they lack required hardware encoding support.
CPU and memory Valve’s current FAQ does not state minimum CPU or RAM figures Intel Core i5-4590 or AMD FX 8350 equivalent or better, and 16 GB RAM recommended.
Router and network 5 GHz router with Wi-Fi 5 or newer; PC wired to router; headset and PC on the same network Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E recommended.
Headset A listed consumer headset model with the required vendor OS version Business headset editions are not officially supported.

These requirements and recommendations come from Valve’s Steam Link FAQ. The PC remains the host that runs the game; Steam Link sends video and audio to the headset and returns its input to the PC, as described on Valve’s Remote Play page.

Which headsets are compatible with Steam Link VR?

Valve’s current FAQ lists the following consumer standalone headset models and required operating-system versions:

Manufacturer Supported models Required headset software
Meta Quest 2, Quest 3, Quest Pro Meta OS v74
PICO PICO 4 Ultra, PICO 4, PICO Neo 3 PICO OS v5.13
HTC Vive Focus Vision, VIVE XR Elite HTC OS v7.0.999.344

Check the precise model and software version rather than assuming that every headset from a supported manufacturer will work. Valve says business headset editions are not officially supported. It also warns that earlier PICO OS versions can cause major video corruption.

Steam Link VR first launched for Meta Quest 2, 3, and Pro on November 30, 2023, according to Valve’s announcement. Valve announced support for PICO and HTC consumer standalone headsets on September 25, 2025, in a later announcement. The current FAQ provides the specific model and OS list.

What PC do you need, and what GPU is enough?

The PC must run Windows 10 or newer with Steam and SteamVR installed. Valve’s stated graphics minimum is an NVIDIA GTX 970 or better, or an AMD RX 570 or better. The RX 6400 and RX 6500 XT do not qualify: Valve excludes them because they lack the hardware video-encoding support Steam Link requires.

Valve recommends an NVIDIA RTX 2070 or better for the graphics card, an Intel Core i5-4590 or AMD FX 8350 equivalent or better for the processor, and 16 GB of RAM. These are recommendations rather than additional published minimums. Valve’s current FAQ does not give a separate minimum CPU or memory figure, so a lower-spec processor or less RAM cannot be declared incompatible from those figures alone.

Steam Link does not make a weak PC capable of running a demanding VR game. The PC still performs the game’s work; streaming only carries its audio, video, and input across the local network. If the host cannot run the game well, a faster router will not fix that limitation.

Do you need Wi-Fi 6 for Steam Link VR?

No. Valve’s minimum is a 5 GHz router using Wi-Fi 5 or newer, with the PC connected to the router by Ethernet and the headset and PC on the same local network. Valve recommends Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E, but does not make either a minimum requirement.

Network conditions affect the streaming experience, so meeting the minimum does not guarantee a particular frame rate, image quality, or latency. Valve does not specify one universal outcome across different PCs, routers, wireless congestion levels, and distances. Its Remote Play page uses the phrase “within milliseconds” for streaming generally; that is not a measured VR latency guarantee.

How to connect a headset to Steam Link VR

  1. On the Windows PC, sign in to Steam and make sure SteamVR is installed. If Steam needs an update, Valve’s launch instructions say to restart it.
  2. Connect the PC to the router with Ethernet. Connect the headset to the same local network over 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
  3. From the headset’s store, install the Steam Link app. Valve describes the headset app as free.
  4. Open Steam Link on the headset and follow its on-screen instructions to connect to the PC.

Does Steam Link VR support Remote Play Together?

No. Valve states on its Remote Play page that “Remote Play Together is not supported for VR”. That limitation concerns the Remote Play Together feature; it is distinct from streaming a VR game from one PC to a headset with Steam Link.
