You can organize a large Steam library with the built-in Library: use manual collections for personal plans, dynamic collections for filters you want Steam to keep applying, and shelves to bring important groups onto Library Home. For a list of games installed on the computer in front of you, use the Installed Locally filter—not the broader ready-to-play toggle. None of this requires a separate app or purchase.

How should I organize a huge Steam library?

Start with the choices you need to make, not with an attempt to label every game. A useful setup separates personal intentions—what you plan to play or who you plan to play with—from repeatable filters such as genre, multiplayer, or games installed on a particular device.

Steam supports both manually curated and dynamic collections. Manual collections stay under your control; dynamic collections use store tags and filters to organize games automatically. Valve’s official Steam Library overview describes dynamic collections as using “store tags and filters.” A collection groups games in the Library; a shelf is a way to feature a collection on Library Home.

Keep the starting taxonomy small

Try a short queue and one social group, then add dynamic collections only for questions you find yourself asking repeatedly. For example:

  • Play next: a manual action queue for games you intend to start soon.
  • Co-op plans: a manual group for games you may play with friends.
  • Installed locally: a dynamic group for titles currently installed on this computer.
  • A recurring discovery filter: a dynamic group for a genre or feature you regularly browse, such as multiplayer.

These names are examples, not Steam presets or an official Valve taxonomy. The point is to distinguish a decision you make yourself (“I want to play this next”) from a property Steam can filter using game metadata (“this title has a particular store tag”).

Choose the right tool for the job

  • Manual collection: best for subjective or temporary plans. You decide which games belong, and membership does not depend on a store tag.
  • Dynamic collection: best for criteria you want applied automatically. Membership is determined by the filters you select and the metadata available for the games.
  • Temporary filter: useful for a one-off browse. Save the result as a dynamic collection if you expect to ask the same question again.
  • Custom shelf: useful when you want to see a collection directly on Library Home. The shelf displays a group; it does not replace the collection itself.

Store tags are useful sorting signals, not a guarantee that every title is tagged perfectly or consistently. Use a manual collection when your intent matters more than the metadata, and a dynamic one when the chosen filter is a reliable shortcut for the task.

How do I make a manual Steam collection?

Create a manual collection for a hand-picked group such as “Play next” or “Co-op plans.” In the desktop Library, open Collections, create and name a collection, then add games by dragging them into it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Library in the Steam client and go to Collections.
  2. Choose the option to create a collection and enter a name that describes your purpose.
  3. Drag games into the collection. Steam also supports dragging a game onto the collections button to begin creating a new collection from that game.
  4. Review the group and remove any titles that no longer fit your plan.

Use names that describe a decision or context rather than duplicating information Steam can already filter. “Play next” conveys a personal priority; a category like “multiplayer” may be better handled by a dynamic filter if the available metadata identifies the games you want. A collection can be specific without requiring you to devise a comprehensive classification system for every title you own.

How do I make a Steam dynamic collection?

Apply the filters that describe the group, then save the filtered results as a dynamic collection. Steam updates membership according to the selected filters and available game metadata, so the collection is suited to recurring criteria rather than a hand-maintained plan.

  1. In Library, open the filter controls near the search field.
  2. Choose a filter, such as a genre or store tag. Where the client offers it, combine that with another criterion such as a feature like multiplayer.
  3. Review the resulting games to confirm the filter captures the group you mean.
  4. Choose the option to save the filtered results as a dynamic collection and give it a descriptive name.

Controller support and Steam Deck verification are examples of filters described in Steam community guidance. Filter labels and combinations can vary by client version or platform, so do not assume every filter combines in exactly the same way everywhere. If the result is not useful, adjust the criteria or keep the filter as a temporary browse rather than saving a collection you will not use.

When should I use a store tag?

Use store tags when you want a group based on metadata associated with games—for example, a genre or a multiplayer-related feature. Use a manual collection when the category expresses your own intention, relationship, or status, such as games you paused or titles you promised to play with a particular group.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A tag filter answers “which games have this metadata?” A manually named group answers “which games do I want to keep together?” Those questions overlap sometimes, but they are not interchangeable: a game can be tagged for a feature without being part of your current plans, and your plans can change without the game’s store metadata changing.

How do I show only games installed on this computer?

Use the desktop Library’s Installed Locally filter when you mean games installed on the current computer. The ready-to-play toggle is not the same thing: it can include Remote Play titles, so it does not reliably mean “installed here.”

  1. Open the desktop Steam Library.
  2. Open the filters beside the Library search field.
  3. Select Installed Locally.
  4. For a one-time check, browse the filtered list. If you want the list to update as installations change, save the result as a dynamic collection.

Steam community guidance describes a saved Installed Locally collection as changing when games are installed or uninstalled. The detailed filter labels come from community instructions last updated in January 2021, so labels or placement may differ in a newer client. If you cannot find the option, check the Library filter controls rather than assuming the ready-to-play toggle is equivalent.

What does “ready to play” include?

It can include games available through Remote Play as well as games installed locally. That makes it useful for a broader availability check, but not for a strict inventory of what occupies storage on this computer. For local installation status, choose Installed Locally.

How do I put collections on Library Home?

Add a custom shelf to make a collection visible on Library Home, then arrange the shelf where it is most useful. Valve’s Library overview documents featuring and sorting collections on shelves and rearranging shelves.

  1. Open Library Home and find the controls for adding or customizing a shelf.
  2. Choose a collection to feature, such as your action queue or a frequently used dynamic collection.
  3. Move the shelf nearer the top of Library Home if you want it to be easier to reach.
  4. Keep the Home view focused: feature groups that help you decide what to do, rather than every collection you have created.

A shelf is a presentation choice, not a second type of collection. If a group’s membership needs to change automatically, configure that in the dynamic collection; if it is a personal queue, maintain the manual collection. The shelf simply gives that group a prominent place on Home.

How can I use collections to manage storage?

For a one-time storage audit, sort a collection by Size on Disk if that option is available in your client. This helps surface large installed games when you are deciding what to keep on a device; it does not change the collection’s membership or automatically uninstall anything.

  1. Open a collection or a filtered group relevant to the device you are managing.
  2. Open its sort menu and choose Size on Disk.
  3. Review the list and decide which installed games you still need locally.

The sort label and navigation are described in older community guidance, so exact wording may vary by client version. Steam’s storage controls are separate from collections: on Steam Deck, Valve’s guide points to Steam > Settings > Storage for managing connected storage. Valve also says Steam Deck supports UHS-I Class 3 or better microSD cards, while faster UHS-II and UHS-III transfer speeds are not supported. A card can add storage, but it does not organize tags or collections and is not needed to use the Library’s organizational features.

What is the difference between hidden and private games?

Hiding a game is an organizational choice to remove it from your ordinary visible Library view; marking a game private is about restricting what other people can see. Valve’s Steam Private Games FAQ says private games remain visible to their owner in the Library and are not visible to others. Do not treat the two actions as synonyms.

  • Hide a game when you still own it but do not want it cluttering your visible list.
  • Mark a game private when you want to limit other people’s visibility of it. It remains in your own Library.
  • Remove a free-to-play game only when you mean to remove it from the Library, not merely hide it. Valve documents a separate removal action through the game’s context menu.

These actions serve different purposes, so choose based on the result you want. Routine organization does not call for bulk removal of purchased games: use collections or hiding to change your view without confusing that with removal or privacy.

Can I use the same organization on Steam Deck?

Collections can be useful on Steam Deck, but Game Mode and desktop Library instructions should not be assumed to share identical labels. One community discussion describes a Game Mode route of Collections > X for Filter > Show Advanced > Installed Locally under Play state; the person asking confirmed that route worked. Treat it as version-sensitive guidance rather than a guaranteed path for every Deck client.

Valve’s Steam Cloud support page includes collections among the client settings Steam Cloud synchronizes. This can carry collection organization between supported installations, but it does not mean that the same games are installed on every device. A locally installed list can therefore differ between a desktop PC and a Deck even when collection settings are synchronized.

Which Steam Library filters belong in Library rather than the Store?

Use Library filters to organize games in your owned library; do not assume Store search filters are available in the same context. The Store and Library are separate parts of Steam, and price or discount filters used while searching the Store should not be presented as Library collection instructions.

Platform filters also need qualification. Valve documents a platform filter for Linux and macOS, but that does not establish identical platform buttons on Windows. More generally, the exact filters visible can depend on client version, platform, and the metadata available for a game. A dynamic collection is only as useful as the criteria the client can apply to the titles in your library.

What is a simple setup for a library that keeps growing?

Keep one manual queue for the next action, one manual group for a social or personal context, and save only the dynamic filters you revisit. Put the most useful groups on shelves near the top of Library Home, use Installed Locally for device-specific availability, and use hiding rather than removal when the aim is simply to reduce visual clutter.

This approach avoids two common dead ends: trying to make store tags express personal plans, and creating so many collections that maintaining them becomes another chore. Add a category when it answers a distinct question you actually ask; leave a one-off filter unsaved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Steam Library collections sync to another computer?

Steam Cloud lists collections among the client settings it synchronizes. That does not install the games on another computer, so a collection can appear there while the set of locally installed titles differs.

Can I filter Steam Library games by price or sale discount?

Store search and the owned-games Library are separate contexts. Price and discount filters belong to Store browsing and should not be assumed to work as Library collection filters.

Can every Steam game be sorted correctly by genre tags?

Not necessarily. Dynamic collections depend on available store metadata, and tagging is not established as perfect or stable for every title; a manually curated collection is the safer choice for a personal category.

Does Steam Deck Game Mode use the same filter menu as desktop?

Not always: Steam Deck’s Game Mode has its own navigation, and community instructions for its filter path may become outdated as the client changes. If a label differs, look for the advanced filter controls in Collections rather than following desktop steps literally.
