Steam Frame is the more Steam-centered option, while Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S are all-in-one headsets with color passthrough and Meta’s standalone software ecosystem. Steam Frame is designed primarily to stream games from a PC, with a separate, compatibility-dependent path for standalone play. Quest 3 and Quest 3S also support PC VR through Meta Quest Link or Air Link, so access to a Steam library alone does not make Steam Frame the only choice. The decision comes down to how you want to play, which games must run on the headset itself, and whether display, mixed reality, storage, or network setup matters most.
How does Steam Frame differ from a typical standalone headset?
Valve describes Steam Frame as a standalone VR headset designed primarily for low-latency streaming of a player’s Steam library from a PC, while also supporting standalone VR and non-VR experiences. That is product positioning, not an independent guarantee of latency or compatibility. Its Steam-first approach is useful to PC players, but it means the PC and network are central to the experience Valve emphasizes.
Quest 3 and Quest 3S are Meta Horizon OS all-in-one headsets. They can run compatible standalone software, and Meta also documents wired Quest Link and wireless Air Link for PC VR. A Quest can therefore be part of a Steam PC VR setup too; the setup, software compatibility, and resulting experience are not established as identical to Steam Frame’s.
Steam Frame’s standalone mode is a distinct consideration from streaming. Valve documents support for native ARM64 and Android APK execution, alongside Windows and Linux PC titles when streamed. A game appearing in a Steam library does not by itself mean it can run locally on Steam Frame. Check Valve’s Steam Frame developer documentation and the game’s Standalone Verified compatibility information before buying on the assumption that a PC game will work without the PC.

The table compares manufacturer-listed specifications, not the results of a standardized side-by-side test. Valve’s product page notes that some Steam Frame specifications may change before availability. Meta’s device comparison was updated September 30, 2026.

Which headset fits your games and setup?
Choose Steam Frame if your PC and Steam library are central
Steam Frame is the natural candidate to investigate if you already play PC VR or other Steam titles and want Valve’s headset built around streaming that library. Consider whether your PC, wireless network, and preferred games suit that path. If you want to play without a PC, verify each title’s standalone compatibility rather than assuming Steam access means local execution.
Compare Quest 3 and Quest 3S if you want Meta’s standalone ecosystem
Both Quest models are all-in-one headsets and offer color stereoscopic passthrough. Meta’s comparison shows Quest 3 has higher listed per-eye resolution, pancake optics, a wider listed field of view, and 512 GB storage; Quest 3S uses Fresnel optics and has 128 GB or 256 GB configurations. Quest 3S’s listed estimated battery runtime is longer, but those manufacturer estimates do not establish comparative runtime under the same workload.

Consider the whole PC VR path if you are choosing for wireless play
Compare more than the headset: include the PC, wireless network, software, and game compatibility. Valve lists Wi-Fi 7 and describes separate radios for concurrent 5 GHz Wi-Fi and 6 GHz VR streaming; Meta lists Wi-Fi 6E for both Quest models. These specifications do not establish a universal latency or image-quality winner.

What should you verify before choosing?
- Standalone game support: Confirm that the particular game runs locally on the headset if you do not want to stream from a PC.
- Passthrough needs: Quest 3 and Quest 3S list color stereoscopic passthrough; Steam Frame lists monochrome passthrough. This is relevant for mixed-reality use, but does not alone determine overall headset quality.
- Storage: Match the listed built-in capacity to your library and check whether expandable storage suits your needs. Steam Frame lists a microSD slot.
