Steam Frame price and what comes in the box
Road to VR reported on September 14, 2026, that the Steam Frame kit cost $1,059 USD with 256GB storage or $1,299 USD with 1TB. Those are dated reported prices, not a guarantee of today’s price; the report says prices include VAT where applicable and lists regional prices for Canada, the euro area, the UK, Australia, and Poland. Check Valve’s store for current regional pricing, taxes, and ordering availability. Road to VR’s launch-price report said reservations used a randomized lottery to limit resellers. A later VR.org specification guide described purchase emails sent in waves and new sign-ups joining a waitlist, but queue conditions can change.
The VR.org guide says the kit includes the headset, Steam Frame Controllers, a wireless adapter, and Half-Life: Alyx. It says a power supply is not included and specifies a 45W-or-higher USB-C supply; the guide reported Valve’s 45W supply at $29. Treat that price as dated, and confirm the live listing’s package contents and current accessory prices before budgeting. The guide also reports microSD expansion, Zenni prescription inserts, and a compatible Arcturus Vision camera as options. Confirm current compatibility and availability before buying.
What Steam Frame is—and how it plays
Steam Frame is a hybrid headset: it can run supported games on its own, and it can stream PC VR from a gaming computer. For demanding PC VR, PC Gamer’s reviewer found the included wireless adapter the stronger option. The reviewer also describes foveated streaming, which uses eye tracking to direct detail where the user is looking. Native play is an additional mode, not a promise that every PC VR game will run on the headset at equivalent performance.

PC Gamer reported that Valve made a native Snapdragon version of Half-Life: Alyx, but that it looked lower quality than streaming the game from a local PC. Standalone results varied by title in the reviewer’s experience. Buyers who want untethered play without relying on a PC should check support and performance for the specific games they care about.
A VR.org guide updated September 23, 2026, reports dual 2160 × 2160 LCD panels, pancake lenses, eye tracking, and a 72–144Hz refresh range, with 144Hz marked experimental. It lists a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, 16GB of memory, 256GB or 1TB storage, microSD expansion, and SteamOS with Proton and FEX. At announcement in November 2025, coverage described Steam Frame as a standalone SteamOS headset based on Arm hardware, with Proton and x86-to-Arm translation involved in compatibility. That announcement coverage described monochrome passthrough; the later VR.org guide reports a separate compatible Arcturus Vision camera for color passthrough. These are different configurations, so do not assume color passthrough is built into the headset. Road to VR’s announcement coverage provides the earlier context.
What the hands-on review found
In its September 14, 2026 review, PC Gamer praised setup, inside-out tracking, wireless PC play, and comfort. The reviewer said setup was easy and that they did not have to repeatedly redo the play space. They also described weight as balanced between the front module and rear battery, and found the included glasses spacer easy to fit. The main reservation was value. PC Gamer judged image quality closely matched to Quest 3, making Steam Frame a difficult upgrade for many Quest 3 owners if visual improvement is the only goal. The reviewer also considered the less expensive Quest 3 or Quest 3S better value for many first-time buyers. The separate Ergonomic Accessories Kit was appealing but, in the reviewer’s view, not essential.
PC Gamer’s review also reports two interview remarks about the headset’s higher-than-intended price. Valve hardware engineer Joy Lyons said, “Everyone’s disappointed by the RAM crisis.” Valve software engineer Jeremy Selan said, “I wish we could have shipped it at the price that we were at last year.” These are remarks attributed to Valve employees in PC Gamer’s review, not a current official pricing policy.

Battery life: a dated software-update improvement
On October 2, 2026, PC Gamer reported that a software update improved battery life by up to 12%, depending on the game and power settings, and improved fast charging while the headset was powered off. “Up to 12%” is a reported maximum effect, not a fixed runtime or a guarantee for every game or user. It makes the strongest case for PC VR enthusiasts
If you own a capable gaming PC and value wireless streaming, Steam integration, comfortable fit, and straightforward setup, Steam Frame’s strengths align with your priorities. In that use case, its appeal is convenience and the overall experience—not a clear image-quality jump over Quest 3.

Most Quest 3 owners should want more than a visual upgrade
PC Gamer found the image quality closely matched to Quest 3. An owner may still value Steam Frame’s wireless PC streaming, comfort, or Steam-focused setup, but the review does not support buying it for a major visual leap alone.
First-time buyers should weigh the full cost and play style
At the reported launch prices, Steam Frame is a substantial purchase, and the missing power supply may add cost. If your priority is lower-cost entry into VR, PC Gamer’s review points to Quest 3 or Quest 3S as better-value choices for many newcomers. If you want standalone VR, investigate performance and support title by title rather than assuming the headset replaces a gaming PC for demanding games.
Budget for the accessories you actually need
Include a compatible 45W-or-higher USB-C supply if you do not already have one, and consider whether 256GB plus microSD expansion is a better fit than paying for the 1TB kit. Prescription inserts, the Ergonomic Accessories Kit, and Arcturus Vision are optional rather than prerequisites according to the cited coverage. Check current prices and compatibility before purchase.
How broad is the review verdict?
The assessment here rests on PC Gamer’s hands-on review, alongside dated launch reporting and a secondary specification guide. That is enough to explain the main tradeoff—wireless PC VR convenience and comfort against a high price and no clear image-quality leap over Quest 3—but not enough to call it a publication-wide consensus. Queue status, software behavior, regional prices, and accessories may change; confirm them with Valve and current listings before ordering.
