Valve’s Steam Frame is a SteamOS headset built for two different jobs: streaming games from a PC and running compatible games on the headset itself. It is not a Quest 3 with a Steam logo: the standalone libraries, software ecosystems and mixed-reality capabilities differ, and Steam standalone compatibility is limited to titles Valve marks Standalone Verified.

1. What Steam Frame is—and what it is not

Valve describes Steam Frame as a headset that can stream Steam games from a PC, laptop or Steam Deck, with Steam Machine streaming listed as coming soon. Valve’s developer announcement calls it a full PC running SteamOS with standalone capability. In practice, that means it can be used with a gaming computer or independently for compatible titles; it does not mean every game in a Steam library runs locally.

The “Quest 3 rival” label is useful shorthand for a standalone-capable VR headset, but it should not be read as a claim that the devices share a game library or feature set.

2. How standalone play and PC streaming work

Standalone mode

In standalone mode, the headset runs a compatible game locally. Valve’s Standalone Verified designation is the practical compatibility check for VR and non-VR Steam titles intended to work without a PC. Check a game’s listing for that designation rather than assuming that a Windows or Steam Deck game will run on the headset. Valve explains the program and its purpose in its Steamworks announcement.

Streaming mode

When streaming, the PC or other supported host runs the game and sends its video and audio to the headset. Valve lists streaming from a PC, laptop and Steam Deck; Steam Machine support is described as coming soon on the product page. The included wireless adapter uses Wi-Fi 6E at 6GHz for a direct PC link, while the headset has dual radios for concurrent 5GHz Wi-Fi and 6GHz VR streaming. Streaming therefore depends on a suitable host and wireless setup; standalone mode does not.

3. The hardware and display specifications

Valve’s published Steam Frame specifications include:

4. What the Quest 3 comparison actually tells you

Steam Frame and Meta Quest 3 overlap as standalone-capable VR headsets, but the more useful comparison is what each system lets you do. Steam Frame’s central distinction is access to Steam through local verified play or PC streaming. Quest 3 belongs to Meta’s software ecosystem. The better fit depends on the games you want, whether you own a capable gaming PC, and whether mixed reality matters to you.

Question Steam Frame Meta Quest 3
Standalone software Steam titles need the Standalone Verified designation for confirmed local compatibility. Uses Meta’s Quest software ecosystem; the Steam Frame designation does not apply.
PC requirement Not required for compatible standalone titles; streaming requires a host such as a PC, laptop or Steam Deck. Not established by the Valve specifications or review cited here; compare the games and PC-link features you plan to use.
Display Valve lists dual LCD panels at 2160 × 2160 pixels per eye and refresh rates up to 120Hz, with 144Hz experimental. Not stated in the cited Valve product information; consult Meta’s current product specifications for a direct spec comparison.
Passthrough and mixed reality Valve lists monochrome exterior cameras; the cited specifications do not establish full-color passthrough. Not stated in the cited Valve product information.
Storage expansion Valve lists a microSD slot; no card capacity or speed recommendation is stated. Not stated in the cited Valve product information.
Weight and comfort Valve lists 440g for core module plus headstrap. PC Gamer described the headset as comfortable and convenient in its September 2026 review. PC Gamer reported its measured field-of-view figures, but the cited review summary does not provide a Quest 3 weight or comfort comparison.
Price PC Gamer reported $1,059 for the 256GB model on September 14, 2026; this is a dated report, not a guaranteed regional price. Not stated in the cited sources; check Meta’s current regional listing.

PC Gamer’s September 14, 2026 review said Steam Frame’s image quality closely matched Quest 3. In that reviewer’s tests, Steam Frame measured 110° horizontal and 88° vertical field of view, versus 104° and 80° for Quest 3. The reviewer also reported binocular overlap of 77% for Steam Frame and 69% for Quest 3 at IPD 64, using WimFov. These are reviewer-specific measurements under the review’s test conditions, not Valve-certified figures or a guarantee of what every wearer will see.

5. Passthrough, weight and comfort: the practical trade-offs

Valve lists four exterior monochrome cameras for tracking. That specification does not establish full-color passthrough, so do not buy Steam Frame expecting an announced full-color mixed-reality view. TechRadar’s November 12, 2025 launch-day explainer also contrasted the monochrome passthrough concept with Quest 3, but its launch-era availability and pricing statements are no longer current information.

Meta Quest 3S 128GB | Virtual Reality — VR Headset (Renewed Premium)
  • NO WIRES, MORE FUN — Break free from cords. Game, play, exercise and explore immersive worlds — untethered and without limits.
  • 2X GRAPHICAL PROCESSING POWER — Enjoy lightning-fast load times and next-gen graphics for smooth gaming powered by the SnapdragonTM XR2 Gen 2 processor.
  • EXPERIENCE VIRTUAL REALITY — Take gaming to a new level and blend virtual objects with your physical space to experience two worlds at once.

  • 33% MORE MEMORY — Elevate your play with 8GB of RAM. Upgraded memory delivers a next-level experience fueled by sharper graphics and more responsive performance.

Valve lists the core module plus headstrap at 440g. PC Gamer’s hands-on reviewer described Steam Frame as comfortable and convenient, but comfort is personal and the review’s impression is not a substitute for trying the fit. The headset also includes eye tracking and an adjustable IPD dial, relevant to fit and interaction, though those features do not guarantee identical results for every user.

6. Storage, controllers and software updates

The 256GB and 1TB configurations provide different amounts of internal UFS storage, and Valve explicitly lists a microSD expansion slot. A microSD card for Steam Frame is therefore a supported expansion path, but Valve’s listed specifications do not name a preferred capacity, speed class or model. Check the live product page for any later guidance before choosing a card.

Valve lists controllers with six-degree-of-freedom tracking, TMR magnetic thumbsticks, capacitive finger tracking and a replaceable AA battery in each controller. Its stated 40-hour controller battery life is a manufacturer figure; it should not be confused with headset runtime. The headset’s battery is listed as 21.6Wh, but Valve does not give a guaranteed playtime figure in the cited specifications.

PC Gamer reported on October 2, 2026 that SteamOS 0.4.3 beta included power-efficiency and battery-lifetime improvements of up to 12%, with results varying by frame rate and content. The report also noted eye-tracking accessibility options, controller-binding fixes and streaming-reliability improvements. The up-to-12% figure describes a beta-update report, not a guaranteed battery-life gain for every user.

7. Price, ordering and availability

PC Gamer reported a price of $1,059 for the 256GB model in its September 14, 2026 review and noted that memory costs affected Valve’s planned pricing. Treat that as a dated reported price, not a universal current price for every region or configuration. For current ordering, configuration and regional availability, use Valve’s Steam Frame product page. Valve lists Komodo ordering information for Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong, and its page notes a later shipment date for South Korea; confirm the live page for your location.

Valve’s original November 12, 2025 announcement said the hardware was set to begin shipping in early 2026. That was an initial forecast, not a current delivery commitment. The product page is the better source for up-to-date ordering status. Valve also warns that some specifications may change before availability.

Who should consider Steam Frame?

  • Consider it if you want a headset centered on Steam, already have a capable gaming PC for streaming, or want the option of local play for titles Valve marks Standalone Verified.
  • Compare carefully if your priority is a broad standalone library, full-color passthrough or mixed-reality use. The cited Steam Frame specifications do not establish those capabilities or provide a direct Quest 3 software-library comparison.
  • Check before ordering the current price and shipment information for your region, the storage configuration you need and whether the specific games you care about are verified for standalone play.
