Choose a Steam Deck if playing handheld is a major part of why you want a gaming device and the JRPGs you care about work well on it. Choose a gaming PC if you value selecting your components, display, peripherals, and performance target more than portability. The right comparison depends on your actual game library and the specific PC configuration—not on a blanket claim that one option is better for every JRPG.
Start with where and how you want to play
Steam Deck: handheld play first
The Steam Deck is a portable gaming PC, and its main distinction in this comparison is that you can play away from a fixed desk or display. That can suit someone who wants to play JRPGs in different rooms or while traveling. Portability does not automatically mean handheld play will be comfortable for you, particularly during long sessions or in games with dense menus and text.
Gaming PC: choose your setup
A desktop gaming PC is a better fit for a fixed desk or a display-centered setup. “Gaming PC” covers a wide range of systems, so its performance, cost, and capabilities depend on the components you choose or already own. Compare the Deck with your specific PC—or the configuration you plan to build—rather than treating a desktop as a single standard alternative.
Check compatibility for the JRPGs you actually want to play
The Steam Deck does not have a separate JRPG catalog by definition: it is a PC gaming device, and access to your Steam library is central to its appeal. But compatibility is title-specific. Before choosing the Deck, open each desired game’s current Steam Store page and review its Steam Deck compatibility rating and notes. Valve’s ratings can change as games and their support are updated.

Pay particular attention to text, controls, and launchers
JRPGs often involve extended dialogue, frequent menu navigation, and lengthy play sessions, so a compatibility label alone may not tell you whether a particular game fits your preferences. Valve’s Verified checks explicitly address controller behavior, input prompts, text legibility, and the Deck’s supported default resolutions. If a game is marked Playable or Unknown, inspect its notes for the specific adjustment or limitation rather than assuming the issue is minor.
Some games also involve launchers or software outside the usual Steam flow. Valve says Desktop Mode allows users to install and use applications outside Steam, but that does not establish that every launcher or game will work without setup. If a title depends on a separate launcher, treat its setup as a game-specific question.

Compare performance against a real configuration
There is no universal performance winner for JRPGs based on the information available here. Results depend on the game, its settings, the Deck model, and the gaming PC’s components. No comparable, title-specific benchmark establishes how a Deck performs against a particular PC, so do not rely on a general claim that one will always deliver higher frame rates or better results. Decide what performance matters to you, then compare the Deck with the exact PC you own or intend to build.
Plan for saves and offline transitions
Do not assume that every game supports Steam Cloud or seamless save transfer between devices. Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ says the Deck disconnects from Wi-Fi while suspended and recommends backing up save files before suspending. If you depend on continuing a save across devices or resuming play after suspension, check the game’s save and cloud-support details and follow Valve’s backup guidance before relying on that workflow: Steam Deck FAQ.

- Choose the Deck when: handheld play is a major priority, and the specific JRPGs you want have suitable current compatibility ratings and notes.
- Lean toward a gaming PC when: you want to choose your components, display, and peripherals, or you already have a PC that meets your needs.
- Pause before deciding when: a must-play game is Unsupported or Unknown, its Playable notes describe a deal-breaking issue, or your choice depends on unverified performance or cross-device saves.
