Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch both let you suspend a game for a break and return to it later: press the power button to put the Deck to sleep, or briefly press POWER on a Switch. Both platforms describe resuming the game where you left off, but the available official documentation does not establish which wakes faster, uses less battery in sleep, or resumes games more reliably.
How Steam Deck quick suspend/resume works
Valve describes a built-in quick suspend/resume feature on the Steam Deck: press the power button to suspend the game and put the handheld into sleep mode, then press the button again to wake it. Valve says the Deck returns to where you left off. Valve’s Steam Deck product page describes this at the product-family level.
This is a platform capability, not a guarantee that every game, online session, or background process will behave identically. The cited feature description covers suspending and resuming a game; it does not describe a stack of multiple suspended games.
How Nintendo Switch Sleep Mode works
Nintendo’s instructions cover Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, and Nintendo Switch OLED Model. A short press of the POWER Button turns off the screen and enters Sleep Mode; press POWER briefly again to resume. Nintendo also lists the Power Menu and Quick Start screen as ways to enter Sleep Mode. To wake the console, press POWER or HOME. Nintendo recommends a short press to suspend the game and says another short press lets you resume where you left off. Sleep Mode is different from turning the console completely off: Nintendo warns that unsaved progress can be lost when the console is powered off.

The documented similarity is practical: each device offers a built-in way to pause an active game session by sleeping the hardware, then return to play. That does not prove the underlying suspend systems are technically equivalent.

Nintendo Switch Auto-Sleep settings
Nintendo lists different inactivity timers depending on how the console is being used. On the console screen, the options are 1, 3, 5, 10, or 30 minutes. While connected to a TV, they are 1, 2, 3, 6, or 12 hours. Nintendo also documents an option to suspend Auto-Sleep during media playback and a setting to wake the console when the AC adapter is disconnected. Details are on Nintendo’s Auto-Sleep settings page.
Those timer choices are documented for Switch, but the cited Steam Deck page does not provide a like-for-like timer list. They therefore do not support a fair comparison of how configurable each system’s automatic sleep behavior is.

What this comparison cannot establish
Valve’s and Nintendo’s feature descriptions do not provide comparative measurements for wake time or battery use while asleep, nor game-by-game compatibility or reliability results. A claim that one device wakes faster, drains less battery, or resumes more consistently would require current, reproducible testing across named games and controlled conditions. Neither description says that all online connections or background activity persist through sleep.
