Choose the Steam Deck OLED if you want a Steam-centered handheld with an OLED screen, built-in trackpads, and SteamOS. Choose the ROG Xbox Ally X if you need Windows 11 for supported games and launchers, or prefer its 1080p, 120Hz display and higher-spec hardware configuration. The better fit depends first on the games and storefronts you use; neither device guarantees that every PC game works equally well on a handheld.

Which handheld fits your games and software?
Choose Steam Deck OLED for SteamOS and Steam-focused play
The Deck is the more natural fit if most of your library is on Steam and you want a dedicated SteamOS environment. Its two trackpads can also help with games that use a cursor or mouse-like input, where thumbsticks are less convenient. SteamOS is not Windows, so check support for the specific games, launchers, and applications you rely on rather than assuming they will all work the same way.
Choose ROG Xbox Ally X for Windows and broader PC storefront access
The Ally X runs Windows 11. ASUS says it can access supported Windows games across Xbox and other PC stores, which is useful if your library depends on Windows launchers or services. That flexibility does not mean every title will behave equally well on a handheld. Xbox Cloud Gaming is also an option described on ASUS’s product page; ASUS says it requires a Game Pass membership.

- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
Before buying either device, make a short list of the games you actually intend to play and check their current handheld compatibility and launcher requirements. Pay particular attention to games that depend on anti-cheat software, a specific launcher, or Windows-only applications.
Display: OLED contrast or higher resolution and refresh?
The Deck OLED has a larger 7.4-inch display and an OLED panel, with 1280 × 800 resolution and a refresh rate up to 90Hz. The Ally X has a 7-inch IPS display with 1920 × 1080 resolution, up to 120Hz, and FreeSync Premium. In practical terms, the Deck emphasizes OLED’s display character and screen size, while the Ally X offers more pixels and a higher refresh ceiling.

Those specifications alone do not make one screen universally better. Consider the types of games you play and whether you value OLED contrast or the Ally X’s resolution and refresh features more. The Ally X’s 1080p panel also does not establish that demanding games will run smoothly at native resolution; no head-to-head frame-rate results are established here.
Hardware: what the published specs do—and do not—tell you
ASUS lists the Ally X with a Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, 24GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD. Valve lists the Steam Deck OLED with a 6nm Zen 2 APU, 8 RDNA 2 compute units, 16GB of RAM, and either a 512GB or 1TB SSD. On those published configuration figures, the Ally X has the stronger listed processor and more memory.

They do not establish a particular frames-per-second advantage, nor do they promise that demanding games will run well at the Ally X’s native resolution. Game optimization, graphics settings, power mode, and compatibility affect the experience.
Battery: capacity is not a runtime guarantee
Valve specifies a 50Wh battery and estimates 3–12 hours of gameplay for the Steam Deck OLED. That is a manufacturer-stated range, not a promise for every game or setting. ASUS specifies an 80Wh battery for the Ally X, but capacity by itself cannot tell you how long it will last in a particular game; workload, settings, and power mode matter.

Tom’s Guide reported 3 hours 12 minutes for the Steam Deck OLED and 2 hours 56 minutes for the ROG Xbox Ally X in its 2026 battery test, as listed in its best gaming handhelds guide. These are that publication’s test results, not universal runtimes or a guarantee for your games and settings.
ASUS also describes an Ally X battery comparison using Hollow Knight: Silksong at 720p, a 60 FPS limit, low graphics, and Silent mode. That comparison is between the 2025 Ally X and the earlier ROG Ally X, not the Steam Deck OLED, so it should not be used to rank these two devices’ battery life.

Comfort, controls, and storage expansion
The published weights put the Steam Deck OLED at approximately 640g and the Ally X at 715g. The Deck is lighter by those figures, but comfort also depends on hand size, grip shape, and how you hold a device; weight alone cannot settle which one feels better.
The Deck’s two built-in trackpads are a distinct control option for cursor-based or mouse-like input. Both handhelds have two assignable grip buttons. The Ally X’s full-size analog sticks may suit your preferences, but controls are personal: consider which inputs the games you play actually use.
Both devices support microSD expansion, but the reader standards differ: Valve lists UHS-I for the Deck OLED, while ASUS lists UHS-II for the Ally X. A compatible card is an optional way to add storage, not a performance upgrade. Check card capacity, reader compatibility, and your game-loading needs before purchasing one.
Price and value: compare current local prices
ASUS’s US specification page listed the ROG Xbox Ally X at $999.99 at the time of the cited research. TechRadar reported October 2025 launch prices of $999.99 in the US, £799.99 in the UK, and AU$1,599 in Australia in its ROG Xbox Ally X review. Those are historical or source-specific price references, not a guarantee of today’s price or stock.
A current, region-matched Steam Deck OLED price was not established for this comparison, so there is no sound basis here to name a price winner. Check live prices in your country and compare equivalent SSD capacities before deciding which offers better value.
Quick Recap
How to decide
- Check your library. List the games, launchers, subscriptions, and Windows applications you need. Favor the Ally X if your use depends on Windows; favor the Deck if SteamOS suits your library and play habits.
- Pick your display priority. Choose the Deck for its 7.4-inch OLED display, or the Ally X for its 1080p resolution, 120Hz ceiling, and FreeSync Premium.
- Decide whether the hardware configuration matters to you. The Ally X has higher published CPU and memory specifications; that is not proof of a specific game-performance lead.
- Compare current prices and storage. Check local prices for the SSD capacity you want, then decide whether either device needs an optional microSD card.
