Valve’s October 5, 2026 Steam Client Preview/Beta update adds a recovery page to the Steam Input configurator for cases where it cannot load a configuration file stored on the device. It also makes cloud-sync status clearer and lets users continue into the configurator without waiting at that step. The announcement establishes these changes for Preview/Beta, not the stable channel.
What the Steam Input landing page changes
When the configurator cannot load a configuration file from disk, it now displays a landing page with an option to choose a new configuration. Valve said the missing-file case was one cause of users seeing a blank configurator. In its Steam Beta Client Update: October 5th, Valve described the change this way: “Added a landing page to the configurator when no file on disk could be loaded and give you the option to select a new configuration.”
This is a recovery path for that specific failure case, not a claim that every blank configurator problem is fixed. Valve also cited a broken layout that positioned information offscreen as another common cause of a blank experience.
Cloud-sync status and continuing past the step
The configurator now presents cloud-sync status more clearly and provides a way to skip that step and continue into the configurator. This addresses a separate point in the configuration flow from the missing-file landing page.

Other Steam Input and controller fixes
- Fixed pairing for the original 2015 Steam Controller.
- Corrected Switch-controller glyphs in Heavy Rain.
- Fixed dropped on-screen keyboard presses and diacritic-options menu interactions when typing with dual trackpads.
Other changes in the October 5 client update
- Fixed cases in which older CPUs could cause the client to hang or crash while starting downloads for games containing many identical files.
- Fixed desktop shortcuts launching with the default option instead of the option saved for that shortcut.
- In Remote Play, the adjust-bitrate option in the network-health dialog now behaves more intuitively.
How to get the update
Valve shipped this update to the Steam Client Preview/Beta channel. Steam Deck HQ’s October 6 report says Deck users can choose Beta or Preview under the update-channel setting in System Settings. Because channel labels and menus can vary by client version, follow the update-channel controls shown on your device. The sources establishing this release do not confirm that it has reached the stable channel.
