No—Stadia did not launch phone-based motion controls or a redesigned touch gamepad. A March 7, 2022 report found clues in version 4.6 of the Stadia Android app, but those clues were speculative, not an announcement or proof that the features shipped. Stadia later shut down on January 18, 2023, so the report is now historical.
What the Stadia 4.6 report actually found
On March 7, 2022, 9to5Google examined the Stadia Android app version 4.6 and interpreted code and app assets as preparations for possible changes. The report explicitly cautioned: “Keep in mind that Google may or may not ever ship these features, and our interpretation of them may be imperfect.” (9to5Google’s APK Insight report.)
The distinction matters: an app package can contain references to work in progress, experiments, or features that never reach users. The findings did not establish a release date, a supported-device list, or that any of the features became available.
How the possible phone motion controls were described
The report found “Device Motion” references that it interpreted as a way to translate an Android phone’s movement into gamepad inputs, potentially including joystick or trigger inputs. It mentioned game-specific configurations and gave racing as an example of how such controls might be used. That was an illustration, not a confirmed implementation or tested feature.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Because the report did not document a working control, it cannot establish how sensitive motion input would have been, which games would support it, or whether players would have needed to hold or mount a phone in a particular way.
What changed in the touch gamepad assets
Version 4.6 included revised assets for Stadia’s on-screen touch controls, which the report called a touch gamepad V2. The visible adjustments were described as modest. A code reference also suggested developers might be able to customize controls for individual games, but this possibility was not evidence of a released customization feature.

- Multi-Platform PC Gaming Controller: Working with Switch, PC, Android, and iOS devices via Bluetooth, wired, and wireless dongle connections.
- Hall Effect Joysticks: Delivering enhanced recentering performance for smoother control and superior anti-drift capability. Plus, with anti-friction rings.
- 2-Way Trigger Lock: With trigger stops, gamers can toggle between short and long pull positions. Additionally, gamers can activate hair trigger mode by pressing M+LT/RT (triggers must be in the long pull position).
- 1000Hz Polling Rate: This ensures that your inputs are registered almost instantaneously, minimizing lag and maximizing your performance during competitive play.
- Mechanical Circular D-pad: Designed for quick reactions and accuracy in every direction, this D-pad elevates your gaming experience with superior responsiveness.
These were two different input ideas: Device Motion pointed to movement-based input, while the touch gamepad assets concerned on-screen controls. Neither was confirmed as a consumer-facing Stadia feature.
What the broadcaster and spectator references meant
The APK inspection also found references to “broadcaster” and “spectator.” The report could not determine whether they related to YouTube livestream viewers or to a way of sharing gameplay. The references did not establish what the feature would do, or whether it would be released.

Stadia’s shutdown makes the report historical
Google says Stadia’s game servers shut down on January 18, 2023, and that Stadia Store commerce was disabled. The shutdown FAQ is available from Google’s Stadia Announcement FAQ. The possible app features described in 2022 should not be treated as available Stadia capabilities today.

Google documented how to connect the Stadia Controller to another device, including USB use and a Bluetooth Low Energy conversion. Its documented deadline for converting the controller was December 31, 2024. Google also notes that compatibility with other services varies and has not been substantially tested. See Google’s Stadia Controller connection instructions.

Those instructions concern using the controller as hardware with other devices; they do not restore Stadia’s servers, store, or games. Compatibility with a particular non-Stadia service is not guaranteed by the controller conversion guidance.
